Just started watching but it looks like he's needle plucking and decandling to balance vigor of the tree just as in Bonsai. Pines are apically domomenient and the top of the tree will grow to get above the under growth on forest floor. By doing this he makes sure the tree grows equally. It also allows sun light to reach in the middle of the tree again to balance vigor and help lower braches grow

Thank you! Perfect display of the art form. So hard to find someone showing how rather than over explaining through narration! Am I wrong to assume that the reason he's de-neddling is based on the fact that needles eventually turn into branches?

Mark Fahey exactly! He chooses some to stay instead of removing because it can become a branch in the future, to either balance more the tree or to replace a not so good branch, which will no improve much by pruning candles or removing needles, so he know that needle to become branch can be trained from 0 and become exactly what he pretends in the future... with pines specially the pruning is always looking into the future several years and sometimes decades because of its slow growth... it major responsabilidad to structural prune a pine and decide either it is good to de needle (momiage is the correct way to say it) or how much should a candle be reduced, because that will cause a response of the tree but not immediate, straightening or weakening, so it is very important to understand how to do it right. Junya san give us a magnificent lesson and I am so grateful for it and for all I could learn from him - not everyday one can have a true and experienced Japanese master gardener to learn from 😊

Also, the ones he removes will force future growth, the tree reacts with more new buds in the future if it sees that its green leaves (needles) were removed. Pines save nutrients on needles and do not feed from roots like other trees, so this a technique to deceive the tree to have more back buds on spring time and reducing candles on spring will force a second flush of buds in one same year besides the ordinary spring one. Less needles help the tree to be healthier because it receives more sunlight to the branches wood, stimulating budding and also preventing illness and insect plagues.

The needles do not turn into branches, but the tree will produce buds at the cut point. Taking needle does help with the rebalancing the energy of the tree.

The tree will eventually shed the needles after a few growing seasons if left alone.

if the branch is strong , thick enough, you can remove the (3years)needles. if it still should get thicker, bigger, leave them. also the new buds can show easier with needles, but if the prune the candles right, new buds will come even with no (3 year old )needles on the branch.

Is this running taking place in early winter or in early spring?
In other words, when is the best time to do this pruning?

reste973 candle pruning is best on spring when candles get bigger, pruning before the needles “open up”. Removing last year needles should be done best on late summer, early autumn.

If you want a small pine in round shape, get a mugo pine.

It's Common name is Austrian pine, prevalent in Europe. Black line is pinus thunbergii, common in Asia. Both great for bonsai.

Nothing special about this technique it's just basic pine decandleing and encouraging back budding.
