My daughter born in ‘98 has ASD. No one knew anything about autism then either. My wife got a master’s degree in early childhood special education to be able to help her. She was non-verbal until kindergarten and the school wanted to put her in a self contained class which we prevented after a continuous battle with the school. My daughter has a nearly perfect memory particularly with dates and geography. She is an expert on classic animation- like the name and dob of voice actors from obscure’30s cartoons. After many struggles with the school system she’s now living independently and a junior studying animation at an elite art school and just got a scholarship to study art this summer in Florence. She’s still pretty weird and struggles with social communication but people are a lot more accepting and understanding now.
The story wasn't about Charlie's business, or the money, or Suzanne... or the rose bushes. 😄 It was about Charlie's personal growth as a human being. He's an angry, resentful, selfish person and by the conclusion he has softened some of his rough edges and learned patience and compassion by connecting with family. One can assume he will work everything else out in time. That's why the movie just ends where it does.
It took me a couple watchings of this movie to notice Tom Cruise, when he first meets the lawyer, saying: "I definitely got the rosebushes, I definitely got the rosebushes". Which is the first foreshadowing of his brother and the early influence he had on him.
I also agree the doctor framed the question in a way that made it almost impossible for Raymond to answer, trying to gain his custody. In the years I have dealing with autism in my family, I'm sure they could have asked "You can only choose one, live with your brother, or go back to the institute, which one you like better. And you don't have to be afraid. If you want to change your opinion later, you can, but for now, where do you want to live?" I'm sure Raymond would have been able to choose only one if the question was stated in a way that he could understand choosing only one, and he could have the safeguard of being able to change his mind later.
If you think about it, you already know the answers to your end-of-movie questions, even though the film didn't directly answer them all. Suzanne rejoined Charlie in Las Vegas and saw the positive changes in him, so they got back together, at least for now. The $3 million estate stayed where it always had been, in the trust run for Raymond's benefit by Dr. Bruner. Charlie's pricey car business already failed, but he made enough money in Vegas with Raymond to pay off all his debts and have enough of a nest egg to launch his next venture. Charlie will definitely make a habit to visit his brother. And Dr. Bruner, responsible as he is, will pay someone from the estate funds to properly pack and ship the rose bushes to Charlie in Los Angeles -- at which point Charlie will be infuriated by them being in his way until he's able to find a local buyer to pay him some money and take them off his hands.
Rainman 2: Revenge of the Rose Bushes. This is an excellent movie and yes we have come a long way since the 80's. Back when it came out most people did not understand autism. Believe it or not, retardation was a medical term back in 60's, meaning slow. It wasn't intended to be derogatory, but turned out that way, so the word ceased being used.
That's how language works. Retardation was the _technical term_ that replaced derogatory terms. Soon, "Visually impaired" will be deemed a hateful term, and Optically Diverse™ will be the new hotness.

Dustin Hoffman's brilliant performance was based on a real person named Kim Peek. There are some good videos out there that let you get to know this exceptional human. His dad was always there for him.
1. Hoffman really did fart in the phonebooth. Being professionals they worked through it in character. 2. The first indication the change in Charlie beginning to change to me is the farm porch scene. 3. The casino would have swapped out the dealer before taking the step of kicking them out. 4. The hooker was just working and it's doubtful she turned them in. 5. I suspect Charlie has a bit of his "piece of work" father has just as Raymond got the completely different personalities. (mentally/emotionally) 6. Top 5-character development movie. Perhaps Charlie won't be so self-centered and toxic now.🤩

I believe this movie actually shined a light and started a conversation about autism. You should look into watching The Peanut Butter Falcon 2019. Stars Shia LaBeouf and an actor with Down syndrome (Zack Gottsagen). It's a wholesome movie and reminds me of this in a way. Same with What's Eating Gilbert Grape 1993 with a young Depp and young Leonardo DiCaprio (plays a character with autism)

Most reactors almost hate Charlie for treating Raymond bad, but taking care for someone with disability for 24h a day sometimes all life isn't simple thing. It's normal that sometimes you lose control and starting behave like this. We are only humans. It is very big sacrifice to take care for those people.
Especially at this time when the average person had never heard of autism. It would be tough to grasp how Raymond was superhuman at some things and yet lacking in the basic emotions over a day or 2.
Even the most loving parents can come to truly hate their severely disabled children. There was a really good episode of ER where parents checked in a very severely disabled child who was essentially a vegetable and then disappeared. After thinking about it I really can't blame them.

I read that when this movie came out airlines wouldn't show it as an in-flight movie because of the airport scene. No one wants to be reminded of air disasters while flying. But one airline did show it. Quantas. They had no major accidents at the time of the movie's release.
Great reaction as always, Biss! 👍👍 There was some good unconventional comedy in this film. Charlie had to deal with his autistic brother's "quirks", which led to some pretty funny moments! This film affected audiences quite deeply. They instantly loved Raymond and showed great compassion for him. Little did they know that they would get to see Charlie grow from an irritating, self-centered jerk into a tolerant and caring man. Raymond barely changed at all, but Charlie evolved quite a bit. Dustin Hoffman won the Academy Award for Best Actor, and Tom Cruise wasn't even nominated. NOT FAIR. "Rain Man" was made when Tom Cruise was still a great actor and not the TOM CRUISE ACTION FIGURE of today. If only he would return to his roots and rediscover his true talent.
People better understand Raymond's condition in part because of movies like this. We are more sensitive and aware that others have challenges we cannot understand and see. It's a wonderful movie and expertly acted by two great actors!
Attitudes haven't changed as much as people would like to think. Those of us who are considerably less affected by our condition still suffer. We spend a lot of energy trying to hide a difference that many people can't accept. We still find ourselves lonely and the world around us cold, to varying degrees. I was only diagnosed with ASD two years ago, and later diagnoses are still unfortunately very common.

The money ceases to have meaning. The friendship of the two brothers and the secure best care for Raymond is the movies 'fulfillment / resolution' / triumph.' The high road appears and is taken. Rain Man is the name of an entity worshipped by many Hollywood celebrities. She has the power of fortune-telling, and many songs mention "Rain Man" in their lyrics in homage to her. This film is also a tribute to this entity. The central character has the gift of fortune-telling and bringing luck to Tom Cruise... Nothing here is by chance.
The money they won at the casino saved Charlie's business. As for the rose bushes, I don't think he cares about them. Both Charlie and Raymond had deficits. Raymond's were obvious. Charlie was a closed-off, impatient, selfish person who had trouble feeling empathy. Each of them grew during their time together. I'm sure the dealer was just doing what he was trained to when he said, "You're doing well. I'm happy for you, sir." He said it completely without emotion. He was just doing his job. I'd expect, though, that a casino dealer would be happy to see a customer winning a lot of money, because he'd probably get a bigger tip. "No one wants a selfish man." I wish that were true. There are lots of people willing to put up with all kinds of character flaws if they get something out of it, like money, sex, or security. Dustin Hoffman won an Oscar for best actor for his role as Raymond in this movie. His performance was really amazing. He disappeared into the role, to the point where it didn't look like he was acting at all. It's interesting how things have changed since this was made. In 1988, this movie was, I imagine quite progressive and open minded about its treatment of people with thing's like Autism. 36 years later, with the understanding of the Autism spectrum, ways to treat and accommodate it, and how to approach it have evolved so much that what is in this movie would never fly, doubly so for a non-autistic/neurodivergent actor to play Raymond. But it was unfortunately a double edged sword. While it was good that we all learned about autism, but unfortunately everyone thought they were like Raymond, high functioning and savant, which is not rare.
More than likely "Iris" was a plant by the casino to see what these high rollers were up to. Raymond let slip EXACTLY what they were doing. So, the pit boss and the manager called them in for questioning. Never f with the mafia. As they say in gambling: the house always wins.
The movie is not about the "plot" and their financial situations, and who filed out the taxes. It is about the beginning of the relationship between the two, and the unknown future we all have when we embark on a new experience. Would the movie be any better if we knew Charlie stoped talking to Raymond over the years, and left his girlfriend for another woman? Or would it make it better if he married her and visited charlie every weekend for the rest of their lives? Is this information that would really touch home for us? Or is it better left unknown and more true to life, and like the rest of us, we hope for the best and work towards a future unclear. Personally I think a happy ending answering all the questions would cheapen this to a made for tv movie.

I think Charlie got enough money from Ray gambling to keep his company afloat. I think Susanna was happy with Charlie's character growth with herself and Ray, and stayed with him. For years I've suffered some sort of "Mandela effect" with this movie. I hadn't seen it for decades until I rewatched it a year ago or so, only to discover that a scene I clearly remembered wasn't there at all. I could've sworn that th escene was an emotional one where Cruise's character starts crying while talking about his deceased father (probably talking with his GF) and he keeps saying something like "why couldn't he just love me??". Does anybody know if this is an actual scene from another movie? Maybe "Magnolia"??
Dustin Hoffman is fantastic of course but what this movie reminds me, decades before the Mission Impossible franchise, is how good an actor Tom Cruise really is.
You did NOT UNDERSTAND the conclusion. All the questions were answered: Charlie gave up the money, Raymond will live at the institute, Charlie and Suzanne will stay together, Charlie will visit his brother because he loves him, Charlie is now a better man because Raymond became the family that he never felt he had before.
Maybe you didn't understand the movie very well yourself. The main point of the movie is that Charlie came to understand fundamental problems of his personality by understanding things about his childhood -- and perhaps also found a way to feel forgiveness toward his father through understanding his father's hardships -- losing his young wife, and having to "put away" a son he loved in the best interests of CHARLIE'S welfare as a child without a mother.
Charlie became a better man because he started caring about others and not just himself. He learned to care about Raymond for Raymond's sake. He even started treating Suzanne better. He also purged a lot of his anger towards his father.

Those poor neglected Rose bushes. I wouldn’t worry too much. I’m sure it rains enough in Cincinnati to keep the roses from dying. I also think we are supposed to feel that Charlie grew emotionally and really did feel some newfound devotion towards his brother. I think the exchange at the train station and the obvious emotions Charlie is trying to suppress, perhaps doing so for Raymonds sake. One thing the movie kind of suggests is that Charlie himself may have been “on the spectrum” as he also had some trouble expressing love very easily. He never tried to reconnect with his father and even though he perhaps loved Susanna he wasn’t the type to express it openly until he felt he might lose her altogether. He also had some similar speech patterns to Raymond “I got the rose bushes I definitely got the rose bushes, definitely got the rose bushes” and this was before we met Raymond. I think we are also meant to believe that Charlie probably saves his business because Dr. Bruner did cut him a check for a $250,000 which he could have used to save the business.

You should look into watching The Peanut Butter Falcon 2019. Stars Shia LaBeouf and an actor with Down syndrome (Zack Gottsagen). It's a wholesome movie and reminds me of this in a way.
Same with What's Eating Gilbert Grape 1993 with a young Depp and young Leonardo DiCaprio (plays a character with autism)

Most reactors almost hate Charlie for treating Raymond bad, but taking care for someone with disability for 24h a day sometimes all life isn't simple thing. It's normal that sometimes you lose control and starting behave like this. We are only humans. It is very big sacrifice to take care for those people.
Especially at this time when the average person had never heard of autism. It would be tough to grasp how Raymond was superhuman at some things and yet lacking in the basic emotions over a day or 2.
Even the most loving parents can come to truly hate their severely disabled children. There was a really good episode of ER where parents checked in a very severely disabled child who was essentially a vegetable and then disappeared. After thinking about it I really can't blame them.

This is a really great movie. Nice reaction Biss. When he farted in the phone booth he actually farted and kept the door shut on Tom that wasn't in the script, all those little things didn't matter in the end, you know he visited he loves him and he is with his girlfriend too.

Good reaction, Miss Biss. Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman have some things in common. They are both exceptional actors and they both have a history of hit-and-miss performances. They have both been in some total garbage movies and they have produced art. This is art. The journey of the two main characters in this movie is breathtaking.
The doctor at the end that asked if Raymond wants to go back to Wallbrook is the film director, Barry Levinson.
He has a son, Sam Levinson, who’s also a director and made HBO’s EUPHORIA.
He also almost stabbed Mel Brooks to death with a newspaper.
I read that when this movie came out airlines wouldn't show it as an in-flight movie because of the airport scene. No one wants to be reminded of air disasters while flying. But one airline did show it. Quantas. They had no major accidents at the time of the movie's release.

This film affected audiences quite deeply. They instantly loved Raymond and showed great compassion for him. Little did they know that they would get to see Charlie grow from an irritating, self-centered jerk into a tolerant and caring man. Raymond barely changed at all, but Charlie evolved quite a bit.
Dustin Hoffman won the Academy Award for Best Actor, and Tom Cruise wasn't even nominated. NOT FAIR.
"Rain Man" was made when Tom Cruise was still a great actor and not the TOM CRUISE ACTION FIGURE of today. If only he would return to his roots and rediscover his true talent.
People better understand Raymond's condition in part because of movies like this. We are more sensitive and aware that others have challenges we cannot understand and see. It's a wonderful movie and expertly acted by two great actors!
Attitudes haven't changed as much as people would like to think. Those of us who are considerably less affected by our condition still suffer. We spend a lot of energy trying to hide a difference that many people can't accept. We still find ourselves lonely and the world around us cold, to varying degrees. I was only diagnosed with ASD two years ago, and later diagnoses are still unfortunately very common.

Risky Business is one of those movies that was often heavily censored when shown on TV. I only first learned of the film because I was into Tangerine Dream, which did the soundtrack.

The money ceases to have meaning. The friendship of the two brothers and the secure best care for Raymond is the movies 'fulfillment / resolution' / triumph.' The high road appears and is taken. The other motivations and ambitions dissolve into petty motivations, petty ambitions.

The money they won at the casino saved Charlie's business. As for the rose bushes, I don't think he cares about them.
Both Charlie and Raymond had deficits. Raymond's were obvious. Charlie was a closed-off, impatient, selfish person who had trouble feeling empathy. Each of them grew during their time together.
I'm sure the dealer was just doing what he was trained to when he said, "You're doing well. I'm happy for you, sir." He said it completely without emotion. He was just doing his job. I'd expect, though, that a casino dealer would be happy to see a customer winning a lot of money, because he'd probably get a bigger tip.
"No one wants a selfish man." I wish that were true. There are lots of people willing to put up with all kinds of character flaws if they get something out of it, like money, sex, or security.
Dustin Hoffman won an Oscar for best actor for his role as Raymond in this movie. His performance was really amazing. He disappeared into the role, to the point where it didn't look like he was acting at all.

It's interesting how things have changed since this was made. In 1988, this movie was, I imagine quite progressive and open minded about its treatment of people with thing's like Autism. 36 years later, with the understanding of the Autism spectrum, ways to treat and accommodate it, and how to approach it have evolved so much that what is in this movie would never fly, doubly so for a non-autistic/neurodivergent actor to play Raymond.

1988 was the year when the world learnt about autism
But it was unfortunately a double edged sword. While it was good that we all learned about autism, but unfortunately everyone thought they were like Raymond, high functioning and savant, which is not rare.
“Jumping the gun” is the term you were referring too.
More than likely "Iris" was a plant by the casino to see what these high rollers were up to. Raymond let slip EXACTLY what they were doing. So, the pit boss and the manager called them in for questioning.
Never f with the mafia. As they say in gambling: the house always wins.
The movie is not about the "plot" and their financial situations, and who filed out the taxes. It is about the beginning of the relationship between the two, and the unknown future we all have when we embark on a new experience. Would the movie be any better if we knew Charlie stoped talking to Raymond over the years, and left his girlfriend for another woman? Or would it make it better if he married her and visited charlie every weekend for the rest of their lives? Is this information that would really touch home for us? Or is it better left unknown and more true to life, and like the rest of us, we hope for the best and work towards a future unclear. Personally I think a happy ending answering all the questions would cheapen this to a made for tv movie.
Hello Miss Biss!😊 It was common back in the 80s to leave the ending of films open. Now adays we like films to be tied up in the end, and to know what actually happens at the end. I think Charlie got enough money from Ray gambling to keep his company afloat. I think Susanna was happy with Charlie's character growth with herself and Ray, and stayed with him. For years I've suffered some sort of "Mandela effect" with this movie. I hadn't seen it for decades until I rewatched it a year ago or so, only to discover that a scene I clearly remembered wasn't there at all. I could've sworn that th escene was an emotional one where Cruise's character starts crying while talking about his deceased father (probably talking with his GF) and he keeps saying something like "why couldn't he just love me??".

You did NOT UNDERSTAND the conclusion. All the questions were answered: Charlie gave up the money, Raymond will live at the institute, Charlie and Suzanne will stay together, Charlie will visit his brother because he loves him, Charlie is now a better man because Raymond became the family that he never felt he had before.
Maybe you didn't understand the movie very well yourself. The main point of the movie is that Charlie came to understand fundamental problems of his personality by understanding things about his childhood -- and perhaps also found a way to feel forgiveness toward his father through understanding his father's hardships -- losing his young wife, and having to "put away" a son he loved in the best interests of CHARLIE'S welfare as a child without a mother.
Charlie became a better man because he started caring about others and not just himself. He learned to care about Raymond for Raymond's sake. He even started treating Suzanne better. He also purged a lot of his anger towards his father.

Those poor neglected Rose bushes. I wouldn’t worry too much. I’m sure it rains enough in Cincinnati to keep the roses from dying. I also think we are supposed to feel that Charlie grew emotionally and really did feel some newfound devotion towards his brother. I think the exchange at the train station and the obvious emotions Charlie is trying to suppress, perhaps doing so for Raymonds sake.
One thing the movie kind of suggests is that Charlie himself may have been “on the spectrum” as he also had some trouble expressing love very easily. He never tried to reconnect with his father and even though he perhaps loved Susanna he wasn’t the type to express it openly until he felt he might lose her altogether. He also had some similar speech patterns to Raymond “I got the rose bushes I definitely got the rose bushes, definitely got the rose bushes” and this was before we met Raymond.
I think we are also meant to believe that Charlie probably saves his business because Dr. Bruner did cut him a check for a $250,000 which he could have used to save the business.
