    Cool video! When you were at the 't Woudt sign, you could also have turned right (where all the other cyclists came from) and you would also be on a supernice bike path which also leads to the Overtoomsepad. I also love biking in this region, I live very close by :)

      Yay! Thanks so much. Yeah, I later researched where that path went. Looked fun. Biking in this area reminds me a lot of the agricultural environment I grew up in. Thanks for tuning in. I hope you are enjoying the Channel. Cheers! John

    Very cool that you respond to comments for your videos! Not many TH-camrs do that, especially in such timely fashion. 👍

      I try! I really appreciate that y'all are taking the time to watch and comment on the content I am producing, so replying is the very least I can do. 🙏

    The windmill, "Groeneveldse Molen", at 8:10 was used from 1719 until 1960 as a pumping station to keep the polder dry. It replaced a mill from 1447. You can see from the metalwork that it can still be used as such, along with the modern replacement in the small building next to it. It is owned by the water board, "Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland".

      Thank you so very much! I was hoping one of the viewers would know the details of this beautiful windmill.

    What a perfect day that was for that lovely ride! Thanks again for showing us. We’re having a day without rain here today, so 👍🌷😉.

    Beautiful route. Where I live, Middelburg (Zeeland), outside the city it's mostly farmroads covered in mud from all the farming vehicles.

    • @ActiveTowns
      @ActiveTowns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, not surprised. Reminds me of the farm roads where I grew up in North California and some of those in Boulder that I loved to ride and run on that were simply dirt roads to begin with. Hehe 😅

    • @joyl7842
      @joyl7842 ปีที่แล้ว

      The roads here are still asphalt but just covered in clay that turns into mud when it rains, from all the farming vehicles. It turns a car fresh from the washer into a rally car and is very unpleasant to ride on as a cyclist. @@ActiveTowns

    Pretty much every windmill you see in the Netherlands is still operational. If it's used for pumping water it won't be in use any more, but grain mills will still mill grain (you'll often be able to buy flour or even bread there) and saw mills are still sawing wood.

    Here you see the water in the small ditches being much lower than the water close by. This is what the windmills do (or did).
    In stages the water is elevated to a level where it can be ditched in the rivers.
    In this way we can keep the land dry which lies below sea level.

    • @ActiveTowns
      @ActiveTowns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Love it! Nobody does this better than the Dutch, for sure. 🙌

    0:40 that road looks perfect for a drunk-riding contest to see who gets across dry 😛

    • @GiblixStudio
      @GiblixStudio ปีที่แล้ว

      in Zwijndrecht there are dykes. when I was younger we road on them after having been to a party. so we'd be drunk. then in the morning we'd wake up at the bottom of the dyke in the grass. usually because we'd be too drunk and just fell down. Oh as a tip... NEVER remove the rubbers on your steering handle bars. If you fall wrongly the steel will go through your cheek and create a big hole and a future scar. but what cool stories we got to tell from growing up :D

    In the previous video there was a sign saying that the separate cycle route would be blocked due to roadworks, and directing you to the cycle path next to the noisy road instead. Normally people would prefer the less noisy separate route that the older couple came from, heading back to the one alongside the road.

    • @ActiveTowns
      @ActiveTowns  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I'm with them. I'd always prefer the quieter route as well.😀

    Very nice trip through the countryside of Westland. Parts of the trip I already cycled during our frequent vacations in the Netherlands.
    You should definitely also try the coastal cycle path from Den Haag via Kijkduin to Hoek van Holland with it's beautyfull view of the dunes and the Northsea. Parts of it I recorded as a timelapse video here : th-cam.com/video/nSqJ3dTnFsU/w-d-xo.html

    • @ActiveTowns
      @ActiveTowns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice! You caught it on a kite-boarding day with good wind. I did make it out to the dunes and Northsea for a short ride on the coastal cycle path earlier in my trip. Here's a reaction video of that experience with Jordan Clark: th-cam.com/video/Db1KTYx5Tdw/w-d-xo.html
      Thanks so much for tuning in. Cheers! John

    This region is called Westland, and is most known for its endless numbers of greenhouses. Your use of the term ocean is typical American. No Dutch person would ever use this terminology. Instead we would say sea as The Netherlands lies on the Northsea. Your representation of our rural biking infrastructure is excellent!

    • @ActiveTowns
      @ActiveTowns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sorry, but you are not allowed to hold electronic devices such as mobile phones, navigation systems, tablets or music players while cycling. Hands-free calling and listening to music are allowed. While stationary, you may hold and use your telephone or other mobile electronic device.

    • @ActiveTowns
      @ActiveTowns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I understand this. Thanks for mentioning it. I am actually not holding onto the device as it is strapped to the top of my hand/wrist area so I can still hold onto my handlebars and operate my brakes when I need to. I highly recommend this method as it is much safer and produces a noticeably higher quality of video versus being strapped to the bike or my body somewhere else. 😀
