The last wooden escalator on the underground (now gone)

  • This historic Escalator has been replaced. It was the only one left.
    Historic escalators are rare. This is simply because they run non stop. I only know of a very few surviving old escalators from the 1970s, they are rare, but this one isn't 1970s, it is 1930s! This is astonishingly rare, not only rare but it is the last one. It was the oldest escalator in London and is the only surviving wooden escalator in London. It was built by Waygood-Otis in the 1930s.

    I remember these from late eighties / early nineties - they had character and a distinct noise when they were working. Good thing you managed to catch this on video before they were all gone.

    I remember a train station in Sydney (Town Hall and Wynyard) had them up until about 10 years or so ago. The looks of them makes me cringe since I learned that these old wooden escalators are extremely dangerous for service dogs, it could damage paws and rip nails and whatnot out. In that aspect I’m glad they’ve been upgraded. The wood was saved and turned into a rather cool looking sculpture that I believe hangs above the new replacement escalators. I haven’t been back since they were removed, but I miss Sydney dearly, and shall return soon enough.

    They were lethal with the wide wooden grate of the steps meeting up to the large metal prongs at the ends of the escalator.

    It's a shame this has been replaced after so long in service. It's amazing that the parts were still available to keep it running. I can only imagine how many bearings and step treads this must have gone through in its existance. I hadn't realised a wooden escalator had lasted until as recentmy as this. I imagine after kings cross it's not something LU would have publicised too much. Just shows though that with the correct safety procedures in place that it was still perfectly serviceable.

      I don't think they replaced many parts at all! It just looked like they either fabricated new parts or bought new parts with the same size to keep it running. It is very reliable after all and waygood otis lifts still exist if they haven't already been replaced or modernised

    There was a running wooden escalator at the original Eaton's Department store in downtown Cleveland, Ohio about 30 years ago when we visited the city. It gave me a really weird, but cool vibe seeing a part of older history. I first saw one like it when my parent's took my sister and I to Eaton's in downtown Toronto back in 1972. I did not see another escalator like that one again until 1995 when my wife and I decided to visit Cleveland , Ohio that year. It blew my mind to see a part of history that I knew so well, as we always went to the shopping malls/department stores as kids on the weekends just for a few hours of diversionary fun away from the house on the weekends. It's kind of a bittersweet feeling to see something from so long ago when I was a kid, and contrast it with how differently things look now in the malls/department stores. I really miss those much simpler, happier times. There was still hope and innocence back then! Life just felt much more positive then, like tomorrow would be a better day - - and it usually was. And those amazing feel good 70s sitcoms, game shows and movies, god, don't even get me started. It's all crap now - - most of it! So I've kind of become stuck in that marvellous decade. This time we are living in now just really depresses me in so many ways.

    Part of the reason why London Underground replaced their wooden escalators was because of the big fire that happened in 1987. I think it was started by someone dropping a lit cigarette butt on the escalator, which caught fire. After that, smoking was banned and the wooden escalators were replaced.

    • @matthewvwuk
      @matthewvwuk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct Mr.D1980 but if my memory serves me correctly I am sure someone discarded a lit cigarette in between the wooden stairs & frame which ignited grease & rubbish which had accumulated underneath the escalator resulting in that devastating fire at Kings Cross St Pancreas Underground Station back in 1987. I do remember it quite well even if I was 12 back then!
      Correct me if I am wrong please.

    • @europa2000man
      @europa2000man 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matthewvwuk I'd say you're right. I wasn't born at the time, so you would probably know more about it than I would, from watching the BBC and ITN News and listening to it on the radio. I remember seeing what happened in a documentary about the massive fire in Kings Cross St.Pancreas back in 1987. It's sad though that they ripped out these old classic escalators form the early 20th century. Also, it's amazing how Britain had escalators long before Ireland did. Here in Ireland, we didn't have escalators until 1963, which were installed at Roches Stores on Henry Street in Dublin City (Which is now Debenhams). I think they were either Thyssen or Marriot & Scott escalators but I am not certain. Most places didn't have them until the 1980's.
