I just rode this yesterday. This thing is my #1 woodie above Thunderhead. The back row is absolutely buck-wild. Not to mention the incredibly smooth track work during the entire ride. Fantastic woodie.
I was one of the first people to ride it in 1966 when it opened to the public and was the second car that left the station. I was in the six grade from WV, and rode with my dad.
I rode it first in the front and thought that it was alright, but then I got a back row rain ride, and that was one of the craziest experiences I've had in my life. People need to start talking about this thing.
In 2022, Swamp Fox was retracked so the ride is running as described in this video again. In 2021, the back car was blocked off. It sounds like the ride I described up front was attainable, but not in back.
Yep it started this month I saw it yesterday on rcdb it says it’s blocked off in a more than temporary manner so I felt like riding front row again and it was just as awesome as I remembered it only runs the blue train now
Just got back from a trip to ride Swamp Fox and it looks like they have retracked the ENTIRE ride at this point. It is unbelievably smooth. I was blown away by this ride. It's like having another Phoenix a few hours away! I'm a NC resident and never got around to riding this. I'll definitely be back.

Since this review Swamp Fox has been retracked for the 2023 season, but in 2022, this has to be the roughest coaster I've ridden to date. I am positive that Swamp fox hasn't been given any trackwork since the 90s as evident by the blue paint peeling away showing its OG green colors on the rails. I am scared to think what it would've been like in a wheel seat in 2022, so I marathoned the front 6 times in a row, currently my #3 coaster behind Phoenix and Steel Force.
@CanobieCoaster some of the airtime is noticeably weak but the rise into the 1st turnaround has always delivered, as is the rise to the final turn having its airtime.
@@CanobieCoaster I will try to get there whenever I go to Carowinds. I actually looked into it before I went last year but I just didn't have the funds to drive that far out and spend that extra money driving that way.
it’s not parabolic, the ride’s drops have the same radius throughout. Parabolic would be constantly changing radius in order to have consistently strong airtime. Other than that, great review!

Great review. Just rode this (back row) for the first time 2 days ago. I was shocked by how intense this coaster was. Mid way through the first drop, there was a sudden pop of ejector that made me grab the buzz bar. It through me way off. So incredible. It was jarring at times, but overall, especially for a coaster that was built in the 60s, it was pretty phenomenal.
I really wish the Myrtle Beach Pavilion and Hard Rock Park never closed. Now there's really not much to do in Myrtle Beach to do when it comes to thrills. In all seriousness, what else is there to do in Myrtle Beach besides Family Kingdom and the beaches?
Great review, and even though I’ve been intending to ride this for years now, you definitely added more to my eagerness. This coaster is underrated by the public for the same reason Boardwalk Bullet and Rampage have been so underrated for so long: they’re off the beaten path for a typical coaster trip, as you mentioned at the end. But that’s why reviews like this (and Rolly’s long-time advocacy) are so valuable. Of course, if Taylor Bybee were to review it and praise it, suddenly it would appear in fifty Top 20 Coasters videos. 😆
Canobie Coaster I have about ten coaster trips completely planned out and waiting their turn for me to get to them, and one trip is of the U.S. Southeast - and Family Kingdom is a definite stop on that route.

I think rolly coaster ranking it above almost every RMC and intamin actually made people overlook swamp fox even more, but to be serious it actually does look like a top 150 coaster in the world, and I’m glad ur back at the park, I’m so excited to go to Dollywood my first time in 2 weeks

This video gave me chills. For almost four years now I’ve been laughed at, ridiculed, cyberbullied, and everything in between for ranking this as my number one wooden coaster. I rank this above the likes of Cu Chulainn, Mystic Timbers, Shivering Timbers... Finally someone has validated my opinion. Is this a top 3 buzz bar woodie? Do you prefer this to Cornball Express? Are there any other buzz bar woodies with airtime as crazy as this, besides PNE’s Coaster?
I do prefer Cornball, Phoenix, and Coaster to Swamp Fox only because the final bit of Swamp Fox lets up in the back. The other coasters finish strong in every row.
I was able to visit Family Kingdom for the first time this past summer. Unfortunately, my first ride on Swamp Fox was on a wheel seat in the final car (the ride op directed us there) so my first ride was quite brutal. I rode it again before the park closed, only this time in a middle seat near the front, and had a more enjoyable ride. As I only rode it twice during my first visit, I am torn, as it gave a fun ride filled with decent pops of air, but also the roughest ride I ever experienced on a roller coaster.
It might have been, or it might still have been closed off. I just looked over the photos on my phone and I don’t seen anyone seated in the very back (that, coupled with a photo I took of the last car while departing the station would place me in the last row of the third car instead). A brutal ride on the wheel seat, but a coaster I much enjoyed all the same. Hoping to return someday to give it a fairer go-around, as it is such an underrated ride.

Yesterday I rode in the very last row and thought I was going to die. 😂 I’m a coaster enthusiast, but I’m small (5’ 5” 120 lbs), so I get thrown around a lot. As soon as we crested the first hill, I said some *$#@ words, then shoved my feet against the seat in front of me and locked my arms into the bar as hard as I could for the rest of the ride. It was wild! So much air time! Lots of violent air time! If I was a larger person, I would ride in the back again, but as a smaller (and relatively older) person, it wrecked my back too much so I would sit in the front if I rode it again. I will say, I rode it on 8/19/22 and they have recently replaced elements on the bunny hill section (obvious from fresh unpainted wood) and it is much smoother. I don’t know if they intend to do this to the rest of the coaster.
This ride has always been weird for me. I went in 2021, and the back was closed annoyingly. The ride was okay, not great airtime. Today, I got 6 rides, 4 in the back, and I finally see why you love it. They just retracked the ride on the run back and it is so smooth now. So much ejector.
I heard it's running like it did when I experienced it in 2020 now. My rides earlier this year were on opening day, which was cooler than most days for this park and before the retracking occurred.
It will definitely feel like a different coaster when the full re-track is done it feels like that relaxed section on El Toro before the Rolling Thunder hill

The series of hills between the far end turnaround and the last camelback has been retracked and provides great floatjector on the bigger of those hills. Also the red train is currently in service, and contrary to what you said actually features one seatbelt for the row, and not individual seatbelts per seat. I was expecting the individual seat belts since that’s what you said, but nope.
I had always been intrigued with Swamp Fox, but just hadn't had quite enough interest to make it out to Myrtle Beach. Your review definitely puts in a strong case for it; I'll probably make a trip out once the micro park with the hamster wheel coaster opens. It's cool that in a city with a former B&M and CCI that this humble woodie has outlasted them.
this is probably the most violent roller coaster i’ve been on, it’s not the roughest (wildcat at hersheypark is the roughest coaster i’ve been on), but jesus, this ride’s airtime is absolutely relentless, and i love it because of it. this is my favorite coaster from ptc, and one of my favorite woodies in general.

It's the r-o-u-n-d-n-e-s-s of those drops that gives that great airtime; newer parabolic kills the air time. Note all the parabolic drops we have these days, but not many round ones anymore.
I really enjoyed riding Swamp Fox when I went to Myrtle this year. The laterals on that final turn were just insane, and I was almost dangerously out of my seat on those drops. Those retracked bunny hills were also insanely fun. My only complaint is that I think the first drop should be retracked. I always ride coasters with my arms up and the first drop tried to snap my neck when i did that. Overall, i think it was a really enjoyable woodie and its very visually stunning. I just wish Family Kingdom was a little bit less sketchy. The ops at Swamp Fox were great, but at the dark ride, the operator was really creepy towards me, and same with at Twist n Shout. Also the surrounding area is unnerving. I don’t think I’d be comfortable bringing my little cousins there.
The swamp Fox was my very fist roller coaster and since then I ridden plenty of others but nothing even comes close to the enjoyment I get out of ridding this one. I've came here every year since I was born so I think I'm a little biased though.
I’ve road this roller coaster so many times. As time goes on it just keeps gets rougher and rougher. Fun ride, but flying out of my seat & slamming back into it isn’t my thing 😂
Anchoring more wood between the main track ledgers would definitely take care of the roughness and allow for a much smoother ride experience. But if Ratcheting Lap Bars are added to the Trains, It will face the same negative remarks just as Blue Streak at Cedar Point. The praises Swamp Fox receive now are the exact kind Blue Streak received before the changes were made in the mid 90's. My 1st ride on Blue Streak was in 1968. And I still love it. When the day comes when the State of South Carolina orders Family Kingdom to change the safety restraint systems on the PTC Trains to Ratcheting Lap Bars, I can hear the Bitching, Crying, and Complaining. This is the exact kind of compliments the Blue Streak received before the modifications were done to that coaster. Now. Explain this. The Swamp Fox lift hill is 72ft. tall, with 62ft. drop with a Train max speed of 50mph. Now The Blue Streak at Cedar Point has a lift hill height of 78ft. a drop of 72ft and a max Train speed of 40mph???? The math definitely DOESN'T ADD UP???? Here's why . Yes the Swamp Fox Trains still operate with the Buzz Lap Bars, and does have the rubber Seat Backs which is one of the major things Coaster Enthusiasts love to Bitch and Cry about on Coaster Trains. And also still use the Skid Friction Brakes to slow and stop the Trains.But as long the Trains have Buzz Lap Bars, Life is good. Now Blue Streak also has the same Seat Backs, But the Ratcheting Lap Bars are heavier, And the MOST MAJOR THING, The Blue Streak Trains have the Steel Fins under each car that are very heavy, Also used to slow and stop the Trains with Computerized Squeeze Brakes. Having Cedar Point Carpenter and Maintenance crews anchor more wood between the main track Ledgers to eliminate excessive bouncing of the Trains and eliminate stress on the track. This creates a much smoother ride. So. With all of that added weight to Blue Streak Trains, Plus re-enforcing the track, Then the Blue Streak Trains must be traveling at 55mph. Think about it More Weight= More Speed. More Height= More Speed. Some SERIOUS MATH NEED TO BE DONE HERE 😂😂🤣🤣🤣🎢🎢
Parks can exaggerate the speed of roller coasters so I don't always put too much stock into that. I agree Blue Streak would have been amazing with the buzz bars. In fact, I still love that ride. But what elevates Swamp Fox over a lot of coasters is the fact it still has those buzz bars.

Swamp fox and the rest of the park is flooded right now from the hurricane. A hurricane destroyed the park in the late 80s, hope they reopen

Carowinds is 3.5 hours away so it could be added on. I am a fan of mini golf so I was interested in that at Myrtle Beach.

Very underrated ride. Loved it when I went to Myrtle years ago.

I feel that comet at Hershey park is very similar to this ride u got the buzz bars and insane airtime
Comet's first two drops are good, but the trim on the second turnaround kills the speed.
I haven't ridden this coaster for about 8 years and I can't remember much about it :/ I was 9 or 10 the time I last rode it.

The swamp Fox was my very fist roller coaster and since then I ridden plenty of others but nothing even comes close to the enjoyment I get out of ridding this one. I've came here every year since I was born so I think I'm a little biased though.

I’ve road this roller coaster so many times. As time goes on it just keeps gets rougher and rougher. Fun ride, but flying out of my seat & slamming back into it isn’t my thing 😂
I never rode it in a wheel seat. I only rode it in the second to back (no other cars in the back were open) and front.
Anchoring more wood between the main track ledgers would definitely take care of the roughness and allow for a much smoother ride experience. But if Ratcheting Lap Bars are added to the Trains, It will face the same negative remarks just as Blue Streak at Cedar Point. The praises Swamp Fox receive now are the exact kind Blue Streak received before the changes were made in the mid 90's. My 1st ride on Blue Streak was in 1968. And I still love it. EVEN MORE THAN EVER!!!!🎢💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
People say this is rough they have most likely not ridden Hell Cat and Wildcat this coasters roughness is nothing
It can definitely be bumpy, but there's far rougher out there.
I rode back car in September. My first time on this coaster. I wasn't impressed. It was ok at best
That's good they got the back car open, but I heard it was running poorly in 2021.

When the day comes when the State of South Carolina orders Family Kingdom to change the safety restraint systems on the PTC Trains to Ratcheting Lap Bars, I can hear the Bitching, Crying, and Complaining. This is the exact kind of compliments the Blue Streak received before the modifications were done to that coaster. Now. Explain this. The Swamp Fox lift hill is 72ft. tall, with 62ft. drop with a Train max speed of 50mph. Now The Blue Streak at Cedar Point has a lift hill height of 78ft. a drop of 72ft and a max Train speed of 40mph???? The math definitely DOESN'T ADD UP???? Here's why . Yes the Swamp Fox Trains still operate with the Buzz Lap Bars, and does have the rubber Seat Backs which is one of the major things Coaster Enthusiasts love to Bitch and Cry about on Coaster Trains. And also still use the Skid Friction Brakes to slow and stop the Trains.But as long the Trains have Buzz Lap Bars, Life is good. Now Blue Streak also has the same Seat Backs, But the Ratcheting Lap Bars are heavier, And the MOST MAJOR THING, The Blue Streak Trains have the Steel Fins under each car that are very heavy, Also used to slow and stop the Trains with Computerized Squeeze Brakes. Having Cedar Point Carpenter and Maintenance crews anchor more wood between the main track Ledgers to eliminate excessive bouncing of the Trains and eliminate stress on the track. This creates a much smoother ride. So. With all of that added weight to Blue Streak Trains, Plus re-enforcing the track, Then the Blue Streak Trains must be traveling at 55mph. Think about it More Weight= More Speed. More Height= More Speed. Some SERIOUS MATH NEED TO BE DONE HERE 😂😂🤣🤣🤣🎢🎢
Parks can exaggerate the speed of roller coasters so I don't always put too much stock into that. I agree Blue Streak would have been amazing with the buzz bars. In fact, I still love that ride. But what elevates Swamp Fox over a lot of coasters is the fact it still has those buzz bars.

Heck the Blue Streak Trains are traveling faster than when the Trains still had the Buzz Bars and Skid Friction Brakes in the Rain. Have you ridden today's Blue Streak in Rain???? To me, speed on a classic woodie doesn’t matter, the feeling of airtime matters.
