Thanks for the opinions. Most people have said HP Envy, and I hadn't really been able to figure out why, since they had similar specs, and the Samsung has ports on the tablets. Samsung is $600 for tablet only, or about $730 for tablet and keyboard. I'll still have to consider them both.
Love the gesture trackpad. I noticed all of hp's notebooks have got it, does anyone know if other manufacturers will have gesture enabled trackpads on their notebooks?
Also, quick thought. After watching several previews of the Envy X2, in not ONE does someone touch the screen! How well can you see it respond, if no one touches the screen!!
The wife wants one of these, but her biggest concern is both how good the stylus will be for it, and when she is taking notes (hand writing) does the tablet register your palm if you lean on it while writing, or will it only pick up the contact of the stylus?
Thanks for adding that. Battery Life is a factor to consider also. I guess the first thing I need to figure out is the size of the hard drive... Anyone know? I was talking to somebody, and they said they'd recommend ATLEAST 500 GB for me, since I'll be using this for college.
There is no mobile version of the OS if I understand correctly. All tablets, laptops and desktops use the same version of the OS, just divided with a Pro/Home SKU. Almost anything that runs on Windows 7 will run on Windows 8 without issue.
Sorry to keep bugging you by asking you questions... So, how do portable external hard drives to work? Do I have to plug it in or what? I'm just wondering about if that would be inconvenient to have to lug that around all the time too.
HP Envy X2 or Samsung ATIV? Please support your opinion. Considering one of them, and not sure. Most people say HP Envy, but yet they have very similar specs, and Ativ is $100 cheaper...
So does it really only have a 64GB hard drive? I was considering an external harddrive also, but, I have to keep in mind that that's going to add on to the cost even more also, putting me close to $1000. But, I will still consider it.
Windows 8 is not only designed for tablets. It is also designed for desktops and laptops. And it is also designed for two different CPU architectures. Windows 8 RT is more common to be found on a "pure" tablet. By pure tablet I mean a tablet-only device, not a hybrid like Envy X2. So technically, "Windows 8" is primarily designed for desktops, laptops, ultrabooks, netbooks and all-in-ones.
okay thank you very much! so is this PC/Tablet Suitable for School use on college for example? and can it run a program like photoshop etc.? once again thank you
What I really miss is a kickstand, to put it next to me on a table. For example I am having a breakfast and I would like to read the news but I don't want the keyboard occuping that much space. Also the SD card slot is at a wrong spot. To add an SD card you have to take it off the keyboard instert the card and then put it back( but it has it). It is a really cool gadget, I like the dual battery and how it looks, but I miss the stand. Windows surface pro has too much power that I wouldnt use.
An extra battery in the base is a plus. The fact that it drains the battery in the base first is a cool idea. Looks sleek and stylish. The screen might be a little too big for a tablet, and too small for a laptop. The combined headphone/microphone port is a big minus! There is no Ethernet port, big minus!
The word that they dont want to use is "ATOM" proccessor.....yes its the new adam proccessor that gave alptop a bad name. I would really find out what this chip can handle before you make any purchase.
Speaking of preferences, if I wanted a Windows tablet I would much rather prefer a Windows 8 RT tablet. But when you have a hybrid like the Envy X2 a full featured Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro is a must. Remember, this is not a pure tablet device. Manufacturers have yet to find the perfect balance between a tablet and a laptop.
Sure, everyone's entitled to they're own opinion, I understand that. But I was just saying that their hard-drives are SSD, so you wouldn't expect them to start off with very high capacities. 500GB SSDs don't even exist yet. I wasn't comparing them at all.
I believe it does support iTunes. It is just a mobile version of the full version of Windows 8, so yes. You can download programs just like a regular PC.
That's because budget laptops use SATA mechanical (moving parts) hard-drives, whereas this is a tablet, which has an SSD hard-drive, so it would be more expensive and have less capacity. Read up on it.
Windows 8 will occupy about 20 GB alone. And even if you install only a minimal amount of apps, you're probably down to about 30 GB of free space for your data. So that 64 GB SSD gets eaten through very quickly. But the thing about these "ultrabook" devices is that they are supposed to be connected to "the cloud" at all times. So they expect you to push and save your data in the cloud or on a network attached storage.
A thinner bezel will be great for looks, but functionally, is not great at all... You need some surface to support your thumbs specially on Windows 8 as most gestures start from the sides...
Wi-Fi connectivity in all of its' glory, that's all cool, but having a physical Ethernet port is a must for a laptop! There's no USB port on the tablet, that's a big minus! If you want to use USB devices you must dock it into the keyboard base. I would prefer a USB port, at least a small one, on the short side so that I can place it on the long side in a stand and connect any USB keyboard I want.
I know why it's only 64 GB. I know it's an SSD, and not a HDD. But regardless of the technical reasons for it, I would still like to see at least 128 GB in there. Microsoft Surface Pro is offered with either 64 GB or 128 GB for 100 USD more. I think HP should counter that offer with a higher spec Envy X2. It's not about total installed disk space. It's about how much you can use. Windows 8 alone will occupy about 20 GB, and after installing some apps you are down to 30 GB.
You must have forgotten every OEM that makes a product for W8 is going to have a detachable keyboard, what do you mean me-too? Thats what Microsoft implied with the Surface. They wanted the best of both words, connect when at table or lap for productivity reasons and detach for when on the go or when the keyboard is not necessary!!
That's not true, SSDs with capacities of 500 GB and 512 GB have been on the market for at least 2 years now. All major manufacturers have them, including Crucial, Samsung, OCZ, Intel and Kingston. Intel and OCZ even have models of up to 900 GB. These are very costly though, even with the OEM discount they get. But I am not asking them to put in one of these big SSD models. But if they must use an SSD they should go for a 128 GB model at least.
The Envy X2 is more of an ultrabook with the touch of a tablet (literally). But it is marketed as a hybrid. Now, for a hybrid, I would expect a 500 GB storage. Be it SSD or HDD, I don't care. Both SSDs and HDDs are using SATA interface to connect to the MB. It's just silly to compare SATA to SSD. SATA does not equal HDD!
I really like this one :)...but it's really shame that they couldn't include 4GB of RAM :( But it!s still miles ahead of my current convertible, Asus Transformer Prime :)
It looks like a nice device, but as far as I can see it has nothing to make it better than the Asus 810, which this pretty much copies tat for tat; so I don't see the point. Plus, the Asus 810 looks way prettier. Now something like the Vaio Duo is interesting, because it actually brings a new idea to the table (and a faster processor! :) )
Good design, good build,... but no pricing? How long do you really want your would-be customers to wait by not providing availability and pricing clearly, HP? I guess they can't wait for long when the first wave of Windows 8 hybrid devices coming out
Well it is not a tablet it is more like pc or somewhere between. You can use normal programs like what you use in Windows Aero ( Windows 7) for example like photoshop and google chrome etc etc with the capability to act like a tablet in Windows Metro ( Windows 8)
People get fooled into buying HP products because after they see the parts that are put in them, they think that they must work well. Unfortunately, however, that is not the case. You should never bother with an HP device, and stick to something like Apple or Toshiba.
This would be without a doubt the best Xmas present everrr!!!! Amazing
Thanks for the opinions. Most people have said HP Envy, and I hadn't really been able to figure out why, since they had similar specs, and the Samsung has ports on the tablets. Samsung is $600 for tablet only, or about $730 for tablet and keyboard. I'll still have to consider them both.
Looks awesome didn't known it had beats audio. Just another bonus
Love the gesture trackpad. I noticed all of hp's notebooks have got it, does anyone know if other manufacturers will have gesture enabled trackpads on their notebooks?
I think the bezel is there for the touch swipe thingy's. Plus it's mainly a tablet.
Excellent one. Liked it very much.
Very well done! Thanks for the review!
Looks good! What is the resolution of that screen by the way?
Thanks for adding that. Battery Life is a factor to consider also.
I guess the first thing I need to figure out is the size of the hard drive...
Anyone know?
I was talking to somebody, and they said they'd recommend ATLEAST 500 GB for me, since I'll be using this for college.

when does this come out, i heard nov 14 but i still have yet to see anything about it
Build quality seems to be great with the aluminum, but I hope it got a thinner bazel.
Perfect for college.. I want it so bad!!!!!
Sorry to keep bugging you by asking you questions...
So, how do portable external hard drives to work? Do I have to plug it in or what? I'm just wondering about if that would be inconvenient to have to lug that around all the time too.
good work michael
What about the cooling of the tablet itself ....i suppose there is no vent for it to cool in tablet mode ....
Very solid first generation W8 tablet. Still looking at the Surface though.
These are going to be great for designers and artist :-D
Does it have Office or does it need to be purchased seperately??
What is the battery life with and without docking?
HP Envy X2 or Samsung ATIV?
Please support your opinion.
Considering one of them, and not sure.
Most people say HP Envy, but yet they have very similar specs, and Ativ is $100 cheaper...

I was considering an external harddrive also, but, I have to keep in mind that that's going to add on to the cost even more also, putting me close to $1000. But, I will still consider it.
can u buy in retail stores or online only?

verge always has short videos. i love them anyway!
I don't really understand these hybrid devices, would I be able to run photoshop or be able to play console games on it like battlefield?
Are there any versions of this with an IQ Processor?
how long is the battery life span on this device? approx?
This video was recorded with an HTC One X. Great quality!
There needs to be an HDMI port and a Mini USB port on the tablet part too. ???
I'm so tempted but the lack of USB on the tablet part is really bad, I don't want to carry the dock everywhere just for ports.
The word that they dont want to use is "ATOM" proccessor.....yes its the new adam proccessor that gave alptop a bad name. I would really find out what this chip can handle before you make any purchase.
R the speakers good without headphones or other speakers
Can a simple convertible like this run heavier apps like photoshop?
Speaking of preferences, if I wanted a Windows tablet I would much rather prefer a Windows 8 RT tablet. But when you have a hybrid like the Envy X2 a full featured Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro is a must. Remember, this is not a pure tablet device. Manufacturers have yet to find the perfect balance between a tablet and a laptop.
so which one is better this or the samsung ATIV?
Wow best so far!
Can I install normal desktop apps on this one?
Sure, everyone's entitled to they're own opinion, I understand that. But I was just saying that their hard-drives are SSD, so you wouldn't expect them to start off with very high capacities. 500GB SSDs don't even exist yet. I wasn't comparing them at all.
There is speakers on the tablet, he said so in another interview :)
@Robsonjas88 it looks like a power button and volume up/down button
oh cool like obviously battelfield might be a need a lot beefier specs but if it runs full windows thats pretty amazing !
if i went to a coffee shop i wouldn't take a tablet i would take the whole thing
So which one is better this, samsung ATIV or Acer Iconia W700?
I believe it does support iTunes. It is just a mobile version of the full version of Windows 8, so yes. You can download programs just like a regular PC.
Looks great
Looks wicked
no vents?
Which laptop is better, this or surface?
New intro !
the other battery can not be fully charged if it is only being charging by another battery.. they just simply equal the amount
What is the price??

Is this tablet pc support iTune
I WANT ONE!!!
disk is 64 because it is a solid state disk, not heated no noise and has a very low power consumption.
the battery can last 16 hours
Wi-Fi connectivity in all of its' glory, that's all cool, but having a physical Ethernet port is a must for a laptop! There's no USB port on the tablet, that's a big minus! I WANT IT!!!! AHHHHH!!!!
how much is it?
Haha the video looks good for a last minute situation
the envy x2 s price is 849 dollars
as microsoft says ( check it out on the microsoft store )

apple's gonna steal that idea and sue everybody for "copying" it
they say its running full windows 8..which sounds like the same windows 8 a pc uses so i would assume so...if so that sounds epic
battery life?
I really like this one :)...but it's really shame that they couldn't include 4GB of RAM :( But it!s still miles ahead of my current convertible, Asus Transformer Prime :)
Yet, no complaints if it was an apple shaped logo that's roughly the same size, huh?
It looks like a nice device, but as far as I can see it has nothing to make it better than the Asus 810, which this pretty much copies tat for tat; so I don't see the point. can you put windows 7 on it
i am getting this
where is tony?

awsm one......d prfct hybrid product
so this is x86 right?
tablets are hard to hold with thin bezel
HP Envy 2 seems like a cool laptop but for some reason I still prefer Windows 7 to Windows 8 - Do any of you guys feel the same way?
so this thing cannot read CD's is it!!
A 17 inch tablet notpad hybrid...That's what I want
1366x768 ?
People get fooled into buying HP products because after they see the parts that are put in them, they think that they must work well. Unfortunately, however, that is not the case. You should never bother with an HP device, and stick to something like Apple or Toshiba.
Yup, so you can have full Office on it :D
very nice !!!
Yeah this is looking like the one she is going to get, thank you for the reply. +1
Looks really nice. Microsoft set the bar high and everyone (PC makers) is topping it.
I feel like Asus should be slightly offended after they made the Transformer and now EVERYONE is making a transformer tablet.
Why? Why Win 8? It's AWEFUL! Wonder how easily you can switch it out for Win7.
Asus TF700 is the best tablet w/ keyboard out there
Is it just me or there is no speaker on the tablet ?? I have really gone blind .....
