I dont think Evil Within is that scary. It has a really good start and the mystery surrounding the plot had me hooked, but I personally wasnt scared of the game most of the time. The only time I got anxious was in the... I think her name was Laura?, bossfight because you cant just straight up kill her. You have to turn her on fire multiple times using barrels and furnaces and will most likely take you multiple tries before you're familiar enough with the stage to kill her.
i would rather play games where you can't fight back because its more interesting so i will rather stick with outlast and scp containment breach thanks for the recommendation tho
Outlast was good when it came to actual scares, but for me the most psychological horror game was Neverending Nightmares. Legit the whole time you were in it you never felt at peace. One level was too long but eventually the levels got to a point where I just NOPED right out of my chair and straight out of my room. It was THAT bad. But the WORST horror game that plays on my Childhood fears is Subnautica. I have extreme thalassophobia and the ocean friggin' terrifies me! To have giant alien monsters in it kills me inside every time I play it. When I'm not crafting stuff in my base I'm either swimming for oxygen, finding fragments, or building vehicles so I can progress the story cause my old save was deleted automatically.

(Personally, my favorite horror games include The Suffering 1 and Ties That Bind, Manhunt, Dead Space 1 and 2, The Evil Within 1 and 2, Resident Evil 7, Dead by Daylight, etc. I'd love to play more of the Silent Hill and Fatal Frame games, and I have Alien: Isolation: honestly need to work up the nerve to continue playing it lol.)

I don’t know if I have a number one favorite, but SCP Containment Breach is one of the top ten. The graphics are kind of wonky, but the core gameplay and concept is really solid. SCP 173 still provides a lot of good scares, too.

I don't usually play horror games. But if I were to pick a favorite, I would choose this one I got on Steam, Fran Bow. There's something about a child protagonist going against supernatural perils that keeps me coming back.
Scariest games as a kid had to be one of those old math helpers and speak n spell toys. Parents got me a few of those actually. Those creepy robotic voices would suddenly turn on at night out of nowhere like some kind of demon was possessing them. Then couple that with parent's drunk laughter and people falling over inside and outside... It was like the entire house was being ripped apart by something worse than the devil.
The best horror game I've ever played in my life is Until Dawn honestly in my opinion nothing can beat it. The story is absolutely fantastic. & The Heartbeating events when it comes to Choices that mean Life or Death for the characters is just amazing.

Condemned: Criminal Origins. A solid FPS with a weirdly great melee system for the time, and an even better horror game that nails that feeling of pure dread. I can still hear the crackheads shimmying behind the walls
my own personal favorite will always probably be haunting ground, it's an over looked classic. i love the ps2 graphics, the mechanics of it, the story and the characters. also just the chase sequences can get extreamly panic enducing at times because of the amazing ost.
Adventures with Barbie: ocean discovery. Seriously. There's a scenario where barbie gets deep into the ocean, and the music gets really eerie and creepy. Then there's these weird creatures which come out from holes in the ground - tentacles, weird looking whales. Absolute terrified me as my big sister played with it
