আমার ধারণা এতো মন্তব্য পড়ার সময় বা সুযোগ আপনার হয়না। তবে বলতে বাধ্য হচ্ছি, আপনার interview নেওয়া লোকজন দের মতামত, আমার খানিকটা একপেশে মনে হয় কখনো কখনো। এটা ঐতিহাসিক সত্য যে নেতাজি অত্যন্ত অসাম্প্রদায়িক মানুষ ছিলেন। এবং তৎকালীন ধর্মীয় রাজনৈতিক ব্যক্তিবর্গের, বিশেষত হিন্দু ধর্মের নামে যারা স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রাম কেও ভাগাভাগি করতেন, তাঁদের সাথে নেতাজি র তীব্র বিরোধ ছিল, সেটা এখন অনেকে ভুলিয়ে দিতে চাইছেন। আপনার কাছে অনুরোধ আপনি ইতিহাস পুরো টাই দেখাবেন। তবে বর্তমান সরকার যারা চালান তাঁদের পূর্ব সুরিরা নেতাজি র সাথে কি কি করেছিলেন, সেই ইতিহাস ওপেন করলে, আপনার চ্যানেলের আয়ু বোধহয় বেশিদিন থাকবে না 🙏

Kunal: How I initiated President Clinton's Indian Trip to positively promote US-India relations (Subroto Mitro).
Finally it happened on March 19, 2000. Another US Presidential Trip to India since President Carter’s visit in January 1978. President William J Clinton, accompanied by daughter Chelsea and mother-in-law Dorothy Rodham, went to India. How did it happen? Why did it happen? Why and how did President Bill Clinton Visit the Taj Mahal? US a major ally of Pakistan. US Congress was then opposed to India. Bill Clinton can only say he was invited by the Government of India.
Since I immigrated to USA in 1971, at the back of my mind was the multitude of India’s populace, beggars, poor farmers, hard-working urbanites. They worked as coolies, as cooks, as maids, as rickshaw-pullers, as laborers, as toilet cleaners. Born in pre-independence, I often wondered about the Transfer of Reign by the British into the hands of Nehru’s Congress in India and Jinnah’s Muslim League in Pakistan. These new governments did not succeed in lifting the poor masses out of their misery or bring about an infrastructure readily available in the west. Lacking the pride of winning Freedom, not having earned it by force and sacrifices, most in government, outside civilians and Government Contractors, took advantage of the national revenue raised from the populace, for them-selves.
Now that the Princely states were also annexed, the democratic Indian government collected more taxes and custom officials collected duties. They filled the coffers of the rich elected officials, who needed more money to get re-elected, and thus enrich them-selves more. Corruption was rampant. The Moslem countries had it easier, as dictators, they controlled their own Treasury. Formation of Pakistan in the west and the East, had already created many millions of refugees. The poor remained poor and miserable. To these millions of original refugees in Punjab and Bengal, Bangladesh in 1971 added 10-11 million more refugees within India, making it worst. Senator Ted Kennedy had gone to Calcutta and I followed his trip with keen interest to see that he was alone in reaching out to help India in its need. Each morning in those days, I had jumped over hundreds of sleeping refugees on the railway platform to cross from North Sealdah to South, to attend my work place from Jadavpur to Coates of India on Canal Street and had seen first hand these desperate refugee situations, such migration caused. Later in Kissinger's autobiography I read how US Secretary Kissinger tried to get Premier Mao of China to attack India, during Pakistan's attack on Bangladesh in 1971. Mao a sane politician and a true leader, refused US this request. US foreign policy and power block games completely baffled me and I wondered why US would consistently take wrong actions around the world believing them to be moral and correct.
US-India Relations
US-India relations began on prickly terms with the then rebuffed U.S. pressure on India to sign a nuclear test ban treaty. India yearned to be seen as a mature democracy, major trading partner and a responsible nuclear power. US-India relations were very poor, at rock bottom. During Indo-Pak war, in 1971, Indira Gandhi approach to US, for assistance, was put off. So she went to Russia for 20-years Arms Treaty. I always wondered why our two great democracies could not see eye to eye.
In 1991, Devendra Singh was the Community Minister to US Embassy of India. An alumni of my school, Mayo College, Ajmer, where I had known him since 1957, inspired me to become active in the Indian American Community (IAC). In 1980, I became active in Sanskriti, and then formed Northern Virginia Bengali Association (NVBA). In those days, Maryland had the larger IAC population and I knew, to do any major event successfully within Washington DC, we needed to unite all local groups to work together. In 1992, an IAC event took place in Marriott, Bethesda, Maryland at which I volunteered to take major responsibilities, and negotiated facilities and catering of Indian food. It was the first time a major American hotel had allowed Catered Indian dinner in its premises. I became very active within the IAC, in many organizations such as ASEI, ICCC, NFIA, and IAFPE. While Conducting Congressional Lobby for India by Indian American Forum for Political Education (IAFPE), in the early nineties (1990 - 1995) I noticed American politicians who went for a visit to India returned enthused about how wonderful their visit was. I had also noted how President Nixon’s visit to China had opened up US - China relationships. Since 1990. Then it was only my interest to initiate a Presidential Trip to India, to improve US-India relations.
1. The Invitation
As an active member of NVBA, I represented the FIA, and so attended NFIA meetings in New York. With an Excel Spreadsheet I presented our need to Ramesh Patel, Chair to hold their next Annual Conference in Washington DC. Similarly, as IAFPE-VA chair, I volunteered to Ramesh Japra, Chair at Santa Clara meeting of IAFPE, the need to hold their IAFPE Annual Conference in Washington DC. In both these the Maryland members supported me and became partners in action. In 1996 and in 1997, these Annual Conferences thus took place in Washington DC.
On Saturday 14 September, 1996, during President Clinton’s Re-election year, at the NFIA Luncheon Conference, while thanking Congressman Frank Wolf of Virginia for attending and speaking at this function, I as Chair of Virginia IAFPE made an additional statement to Donald Fowler, the DNC Chairman, present as the chief guest at this Luncheon, requesting him to arrange a Presidential Trip for Bill Clinton to visit India, as it was a long time since President Carter’s Trip and such a visit was again necessary. Don shook his head indicating he agreed. India’s Ambassador Naresh Chandra, who was present at the luncheon, Shyamala Cowshik, the DCM, and Wajahat Habibullah, the Community Minister, immediately picked up on the issue to request the External Affairs Minister to invite the President to India.
2. The Fundraising
The DNC then wanted us to raise funds for President Clinton. An Indian member of DNC wrote to us all to assist him in this. At that time I as Treasurer of IAFPE was in communication with the author of an article in “India Abroad” who had written an article on 100 Indian Businesses in US asking him for contacts, so I can raise funds for IAFPE. He would not give these contacts to me for Privacy reasons, but when I wrote to him that DNC needed the contacts for President Clinton’s fund raising, he immediately sent it. Within a week DNC raised $400,000 as tickets for a social dinner with the President. This impressed President Bill Clinton and he agreed to visit India if he won the re-election. At the Banquet for India’s Golden Jubilee of Independence, in August 1997, First Lady Hillary, our Chief Guest came and presented a video at which the re-elected President indicated his willingness to visit India. It was then being planned around 1998 or early winter of 1999.
3. India’s 1998 Nuclear Explosions and softening of its impact
But then India detonated five nuclear tests on May 11 and May 13. This further angered the US Congress. I had prepared an article on India’s Nuclear Defense Environment Policy. Including facts from the tests, and that India’s nuclear policy was a deterrent, I immediately re-wrote the article and sent these to all known press POC’s and forwarded to all Congressional personnel. On May 14th IAFPE already had planned a Congressional Lobby for India at Dickerson Senate Building at which only a few Congressmen or Senators attended not knowing how others would react. Washington atmosphere was filled with Congressional opposition to India. With time as they studied our details the atmosphere softened. Washington Post had absolutely no idea on what and why it happened. My article was later published in the IAFPE National Convention Magazine, August 1997, titled “Facts on India’s Nuclear Defense Environment” Marriott Conference Center, Chantilly, Virginia.
Bill Clinton became the fourth US president to visit India. His itinerary was packed with visits to Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Hyderabad and Mumbai besides Delhi. Clinton's five-day trip was the longest by a US president. "This visit is long overdue. It is an opportunity for India and the U.S. to see how this important relationship fits into their larger interests--to form a vision for their future relations," said R.S. Jassal, India's Foreign Ministry spokesman. Four of the leading Indian newspapers, The Hindu, The Indian Express, The Hindustan Times (NC Menon), and The Times of India focused on "rekindling ties between the US and India," and the removal of 51 companies from the "entities list."
Clinton’s high point was a speech in Parliament. He may have been involved in a scandal back home but it had little impact in India. Clinton's visit to Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh became a showcase of India's arrival on the IT stage. The father-daughter team visited India, loved the food and the country, visited the Taj Mahal and got on famously with Indians.
