The tree peony 牡丹 is still growing.
Tree peonies 牡丹 have woody stems because they are shrubs 灌木. They originated in China and later were transplanted in Japan and elsewhere. In English, the term "peony" actually means 芍藥. 牡丹 is translated into English as "tree peony".
Reference: The Book of Tree Peonies / by Gian Lupo Osti (Turin: Umberto Allemandi, c1997, c1999). The author Osti went to China from Italy twice in the 1990s searching for tree peonies in the wild (原生牡丹). He calls on the Chinese government to stop local people from digging up wild tree peonies which they think have medicinal uses.
