Mix a half bucket of soil into the pile Erin and Mike. It contains the necessary microbes and will speed up your process a little. It's like seeding the garden.
yes ore add some finisd compost. ore you can also buy a bacteria powder that you mix with water, but thats not nessesay if you have som old compost. but as Erin said: the pile was probably a bit to wet. the bacteria need some oxygen to start.. and as the temperature rise, the composting go faster and faster until it reach max and some of the bacteria dies ore goes inactive, im not sure whats realy happends.. i just know that you then must turn the pile to get the composting to max again so that the outside of the pile also get some temperature-bacteria growt. hehe

When I was a kid I helped my Dad clean out the barn . He was scoop shovelling the last of the "soup" into the front end loader bucket . Of course I had to sit on the tractor..Well lets just say my feet barely touched the ground as I ran for the house after I touched the hydraulic lever ! Covered him head to rubber boots.He cooled off after a while 😉
I used to use the manure spreader to mix our manure. Start the spreader and load as fast as it will take it. It makes a nice long row that heat's real good. Thanks for the video and entertainment!!!!!!

Fun stuff. Mix extremely well. Pile must be at least 3'x3'x3'. Let sit for 1 week and mix again. Each week the pile must be mixed once or twice until the compost is finished. best of luck...
I mixed it a little more today and planning on letting it sit for about a week to let it do it's thing. It is extremely wet but I also spread it out some but it's still a big pile. Thanks for watching! -Erin

we trade other items on the place for wood chips which we spread on top the compost pile to hold the stink down and keep the heat in plus it gives the pile a much needed mix of nutrients. throw some blood meal in to get it going.
I’m too waiting for my first calf. I have been composting for a few years now, be careful, every time my poop pile has grown. I only have 12 head, planning to expand the herd, just to get a bigger poop pile! Compost is great! Good luck!
Hi you two, at our garden centers I sell a LOT of composted cow manure, and I mean a LOT of it! (2.99 for a 40 lb. bag) Depends on who we get it from, but it's usually composted for at least a year, so it doesn't smell. I am near "LIttle Italy" in Chicago, and a lot of people who shop with us are old-timey farmers from Italy. They grow a lot of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, eggplant and the like besides large showy flowers and even a lemon tree in a pot (Zone 5b here in Chicago). In addition to this we've sold earthworm castings, chicken manure, sheep manure, and there used to be a place in Wisconsin that produced Duck Poo! Anyone doing closed cycle aquaponics is utilizing fish poo which is GREAT for plants! Even if you clean your fish tank once a month, use the waste water for your plants, they do great by it! So, when one asks me what I do for a living, a jokingly tell them I purvey poo for a living. Then I explain I run garden centers and the weird looks go away.....xoxo from Chicago! We are just starting a mini poo pile....we only have 10 cows. We love our cow manure.....yes we are probably mentally unstable but it’s exciting to finally have enough of it to start good composting to add to our clay soils. Yours is going to be awesome compost.
I have been stockpiling the chicken house cleanings from the winter. 2 days ago it was giving off steam. It was 125°F. This weekend I plan to do similar to your project there.

you need a compost tumbler. I've never seen one the size you need, but my garden size allows a load of finished compost every two or three weeks. Also a manure fork or garden fork work much better than a shovel.
Alsome video I use compost in my gardens and food plots for deer and trucks. In stead of just using manure and straw add some wood ashes the minerals will feed the bacteria and the coals will give a home to the Bacteria.

Suggestion large diameter pvc pipe with holes drilled into it. Pvc pipe through pile. Add air by blowing leaf blower into pvc pipe. Make sure one end of pvc pipe is closed off to force air into your pile
Funny thing about your poo expertise Erin, or poospertise, was just having a similar conversation here a couple days ago. Would seem to be that you have an ample supply of a wet poo product fairly fresh from the source. I would wonder how the process could be improved by mixing in chopped hay or straw at the pen source, which would seem to mix again upon being dropped into the poo trailer, that could be mixing the liquids towards the surface along the poo trail, to maybe spread out upon some well placed chopped straw or hay prior to mixing and stacking into maybe a tighter poo pile? With a little seasoning, perhaps an added commodity to your weekend farmer's market of Erin's Poofect Grow Medium? -Bob...

How about adding some straw to watery manure while it's still in the shed and blending them in there,it might be easier to scoop out when it's a bit drier.
I wont complain ever again about picking up moist aromatic dog crap after seeing that trailer! How long will it take for the Manure to transform to compost?
Maybe you could get a rototiller for your smaller tractor, then make the poo pile about the width of the tiller and about 8" deep, then just keep adding straw, rototill, add straw, rototill until it gets the right balance of carbon and green material, then you can stack it in a large stack to "cook" at your needed temperatures.
Let worms do the hard work! You should dig trenches about 12 inches deep, put 3-4 inches of old or new manure in and cover with 3-4 inches of soil then put your seeds in the soil and water it. The compost will heat up to make the seeds germinate well and then feed the roots. The trench will make sure all water gets to the plants. This is what I learned from Italians worling in UK country house kitchen garden. The trench will retain enough nutrients to be used for a different crop next year. Follow peas with onions or celery or fennel with pak choi etc.
We als use our cow manure for gardening by the way what types of cows do you have we have black Angus and red Angus and black baldies which types of bales do you rather round or square ?And do you know Where Newfoundland is?

What about the pathogens and herbicides left over from the animal feed into the poo that doesnt get broken down or have a half life when heated in the compost pile. What about that? ??????

Excellent video, don't worry, it will heat up, hope you included the pig pen straw, makes good compost, so much better than liquid manure spread in tank spreaders from big underground storage tanks, the heat will soon be gone in the composting process.
i have an insulated compost bin in my garden where i compost kitchen scraps-gras from the garden, and some wood shavings-from my planer and sawdust and so on all year in quite cold norway. its smoking hot even if its say 10 below freezing.. when i started it some years ago, i bought a pack of compost starter, its a powder bacteria you mix with water,, but now when its full i just keep a few buckets of the finisd compost and use that to start a new batch. point is. yes it probably would start composting without the added bacteria,,, but you also then risk that it start rotting instead and spread bad smell all over the neighbourhood haha i guess both the manure and straw contains more than enough bacteria, so you dont have to add extra.

Erin if you wait a day or two it should start heating. The water will settle too the bottom. That's how my smaller scale stuff works
