why we are used different material for two faces?

One Hard material and one soft material used in Seal faces.. So During running by tension of spring Hard face make pressure on soft face.. And by this minor friction generate and soft material face thickness reduce till tension.. If we keep both face hard then no faces thickness will reduce and by friction and wear and tear face damage ( crack or broken)
