    I was there in '78 and witnessed the whole thing sitting in the Tower Terrace. Herk was the rebel with enough foresight to recognize that the technical direction of Indycar was taking driver skill out of the equation, at least on big ovals, and that the result would be drivers earning rides based on bringing money or road racing skills alone. By the late 70s and early 80s, he was telling young American open wheel drivers that their future was in NASCAR. Sadly for Indycar, he was absolutely right.

    Haven’t gone through the comments to see if anyone has noted this, but the video comes from WTHR-Channel 6, now the ABC affiliate, then the NBC affiliate, and Tom Sneva had taken his second straight Indy 500 pole, setting one and four-lap average records the day before (the first weekend was rained out - yes, back then, Indy had 4 days of qualifying and Day 1 was Pole Day). So that’s the Indy 500 pole sitter cracking jokes about this as it happened.
    Each local Indy station had a driver that would come on during the daily wrapup of track activities to discuss what had happened. 6 had the best wrapup, using the last 15 minutes of the early evening newscast for “Trackside” with Sneva, longtime Speedway PA announcer and local icon Tom Carnegie (the white-haired guy) and a couple of reporters. On qualifying Days 2 and 3, Channel 6 would break in to programming occasionally for “Trackside: Qualifications” updates and sometimes show a qualifying run.
    Jerry Sneva, Tom’s brother, would be the slowest qualifier that year at 187.266 mph, much faster than Hurtubise had been clocked. Big argument the next day in school about whether or not he should’ve been allowed to run

    I can’t help but wonder if Hurtubise and A.J. Foyt ever had a difference of opinion. A.J. wasn’t easy to push around either and he was known for a few altercations with other drivers.

    The hilarious thing is roadsters morphed into supermodifieds, and on a short oval a supermod will eat an Indycar's lunch.

    Jim Hurtubise is my earliest memory of Indy car racing. We were watching it on TV and as Jim started running, my father said, "Shoot him in the leg!". We children understood that he meant it facetiously and wished Jim no real harm. The timing of the remark was hilarious. Either that or we just found the adults delightfully silly.

    While i think he did a great job of making an ass of himself, can you really blame him? What a dumb rule, if you even want to call it that. All issues couldve been solved by just letting him run knowing he wasnt going to make the race anyway, so what did it hurt?

  • @bradsanders407
    @bradsanders407 ปีที่แล้ว

    He may have caused that driver to miss the field if the track conditions changed not in his favor which could be done by temper change. Or the track changed in his favor and he was just that bad. Or nothing changed and he didn't have any effect on the track.

    I got to be real; As memorable a moment as it was, it was still an absolutely shameful display by Hurtibise. His frustration with the rule was understandable, but his basis for the protest was...flawed, to put it politely, and in no way justified the extremes to which he took it.
    In a more positive note, I've always felt that if he'd taken the Mallard to a proper aerodynamicist and done some more weight reduction/balancing work he might have been able to keep it capable of qualifying up until 77 or 78. It never would have been remotely competitive, but back row start could have been doable.
