This is such good information! I have a question. If I have a mixture of fluorescent light and underwater video lights, would you suggest this filter as well? I am currently prepping to shoot inside a large aquarium tank ! is very low light , lit with fluorescents from above, and will probably grab a light with me to go into the dark areas......
Hi Katherine. That's quite a difficult shooting scenario! If possible I would use lights strong enough to overpower the fluorescence light output. Filter will reduce the amount of light hitting the lens, so I'd probably avoid that all together. Good luck!
Hi there! First of all, thank you so much for this video. I have been filming underwater with my GH5 for 6 years now. After previously using Canon cameras, I was dismayed by the poor colors produced by the GH5 even with manual white balance. However, I have since found a workflow that produces somewhat decent colors. I set the Kelvin to 10000 and film in V-log at 10bit 4:2:2, and then do a very time-consuming color correction in Final Cut X. Now, I am wondering if this Keldan filter could save me some work. Is it possible to film in Cine-D with this filter and get good colors? This would save a lot of time in post-production. Does the manual white balance work better with this filter on the GH5 than without it? Even with the SF-2, there is a lot of light loss, so I am skeptical if the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. I would be very grateful for any advice. Thank you very much and best regards! Andreas
In my experience shooting in tropical waters mostly at 5-25m, this thing works. I'm not necessarily talking drastic results, but it gives you the right boost in colors where it is needed. And with a f2.8 or better lens I wouldn't worry about the light loss. I have shot it in V-Log with no issues, don't know about Cine-D
Does the red filter improve your video noise at depth. I’m using R5 did my custom WB at 25M, properly exposed, I encountered noise on my footage.. I read somewhere that custom white balance will cause noise.. not sure if that’s true
@@AquaticImages my iso just around 800-1600, shutter 1/125, 60fps, aperture f2.8-10 depends on exposure, shooting in canon 4K all-I clog3.. I encountered grainy footage
@@uwjacksonvid interesting. Can't imagine it's the ISO values with the R5. Perhaps tho, it could be the picture profile. I've found the deeper I go, the less useful I find flat profiles. Perhaps give something like neutral or vivid a go next time. I realize it may seem odd not to shoot in log, but if you think about it there's not much dynamic range to be captured underwater, hence shooting LOG isn't strictly necessary. I actually shoot like 99% of my stuff in vivid.
Hi Chad, Not that I'm aware of no. The SF-2 is great, but it's mainly designed for compacts and above. However I recently got the Hero 10 myself and I landed on this set of red filters, being widely accepted as the best you can get. They come in 2 versions, one with a macro filter too. I'll link both; www.housingcamera.com/backscatter-ff-2kit8.html#aquaticimages www.housingcamera.com/backscatter-ff-pro8.html#aquaticimages
@@AquaticImages yea yeah saw them too around the internet. So what i was planning is to get this housing with that ring holder. I think we can use up/down rings intil i can attach these keldan filters. Not sure if its worth it though. backscatter filter or keldan filters, do they have that much difference in color?
@@AquaticImages For the GoPro, you could possibly try with the Keldan SF -1.5 film filter, cut and placed inside the Gopro housing. I'm currently trying things out with the Keldan SF-1.5 film filter and the Auto-Magic filter, both stuck on the lens of my Panasonic LX10 compact, since I use the Inon UWL-100 wet lens in ambient light (white balancing manually with a Whibal grey card). Both are really nice - Keldan is more desaturated, but seems to give a better balance, especially deeper. The Magic Filter is more saturated, so pops more before grading but seems to degrade more at depth. Both filters are supposed to block the equivalent of 1.5 stops of light. Tried them on a local wreck (Iro Maru) in Palau where I now work, but the conditions were quite different, greener water on the Keldan day (site is in the lagoon, so never great, though not as bad as the Boonsung Wreck, yeah 😉) - still managed to get usuable results down to 25m, best in the 10-15m range, as predicted. I think I'll stick to the Keldan for the time being. Good video mate, but I think the music could be a touch lower, it was difficult to hear you at some points. Keep it up! :)
Appreciate the feedback Greg, thanks 😊

It shouldn't no, possible that you increased your ISO to compensate for the loss of light?
