How has season ending injury happen every year over the past 6 years. It’s truly unbelievable
If you didnt have bad luck youd have none at all
@@PommyinOZI’d rather have none then Negative
@@PommyinOZshe’s right though fuck me, what are they doing at training giving them a ms-13 beating
@@PommyinOZI have heard that one from David Croft (F1’s equivalent of BT) far too many times
🤣🤣🤣 I'd rather have none. It's an old classic laughing magpie 🤣🤣🤣
We have some options don’t we,I really like the Jagga option similar to what Daicos and Sheezel have done and I’d love to see Billy Wilson get a run this year also
Fair few in the mix
@@roccomoro8337 The former of what you pointed out is what I have been putting out, and Alastair Clarkson is also doing it with McKercher
Great video mate. Go on Billy Wilson!
Cheers mate! Billy is a gun!
Great video! Only catch with all of these scenarios is best surmised by your final comment.. “can Carlton do something intelligent?”
Thanks mate, I live in hope hahahah
It’s an exciting opportunity.
I think Jagga and Ollie off the half back line is the most likely scenario and hopefully Binns then gets a run on the wing as well.
Or the Walsh man cracks in for a Brownlow 👌
Massive oppo for a lot of blokes
Docherty is the answer, he checks every box. Good overhead, intelligent, good user by hand and foot, good leader and he's tough as nails. His only question mark is whether his body will hold up. I can see Doc starting at HB and potentially rotating him with Jagga off the I/C
Dont mind it
@PommyinOZ I think Billy Wilson is earmarked as the Saad replacement/backup should something happen. Similar traits, not sure he has the x factor that Saad has.
Not a fan of Ollie at HB. Lacks the overhead ability, I don't think he's strong enough if he gets caught out in 1v1 situations and his awareness in congestion is still suspect IMO.
I like Lucas but I think they'll put at least a year of VFL into him like we've done with Binns, Wilson and Cowan to an extent.
I'd love to see a video of KPD depth that we'll inevitably need for Haynes
See what I can rustle up for you my man
I hope (for my fantasy team) you are correct.
Well said Pomzilla
Thanks my friend
I pray for the Jagga option but I’m fully aware it’ll likely be Doch
Yeah hahahahaha I've kinda resigned myself
You could add to that list sos boyd cincotta cerra but i like the lucas campo idea would give him a shot at being a reg in the team but like you said its a bit early. The practice games will be very interesting to see what they try
Yeah tried to focus with major reported role changes or ones we ain't seen yet or returning from a role out injured. But lots of options he tried acres and cerra half back so good shouts
We have so much depth at the moment. Definitely looking forward to Ollie playing defence. I think he'll do great there.
Billy is a great option, he'll get his chance this year for sure.
A little sad you didn't mention JSOS. I know you're not a fan of him playing down back but the club have its the move. He'll be a great addition 💙
Jsos for me has to take a central position, would say if they replace one of the few below 190 newman with a 194 slow player we would be in a world of hurt with our movement down back, think he will be fighting to get into one of the 3 tall spots voss loves to rotate like last year when it was Kemp, Weiters and McGov
I like the sound of Billy hopefully getting game time sooner rather than later, that goes the same for Binns & Moir.
Agree mate 100%
Brilliant pommy I would love to see Wilson given a chance off HBF rotating with Smith in the midfield
Me too mate and thank you
@ Always a pleasure watching you mate
Evening mate, yeah our midfield was like the dam busters, big bulky crrash against the dam wall and explode a hole through it game plan but if it missed and flew over the top, didn't the oppo slaughter us on the outside, that style isn't winning us a granny. Newmans a smart footballer can see him being the link to allow Walshy some space with some of the younger boys as well. Damn those footy gods. Love the idea of Ollie hanging about down back he's earnt the responsiblity, as for his kicking, the only one end of last year trying to change the game with delivery, taking on the high risk high reward kick and not just do the same down the line like everyone else and payed the price at times. With maturitys experience he'll improve the percentages. Both Binns and Billy have to be given a good look, we have to know if they have what it takes and not have a career as promising list spot takers, form deserving of cause. Lucus Pom, unexpected, our coaching panel will have to overdose on a daring pill, not sure they're capable of that. No matter what happens Pom, have to get Walshy out of the rugby scrum, if we want him playing great footy for years to come. Like your idea for Jagga mate, we have plenty to play in the centre as long as we can keep them on the park. Analysis never disoppointing mate, Go Pom, Go Blues
Love it mate. Deffi be nice to see us go bold bring in some youth and look to really spread the play and stop being in the trenches every play. Thanks mate let's bring this home
Definitely an interesting problem to have Pom! I think Jagga off the HB is the better way to go cause we've seen it 3yrs running now with Daicos, Sheezel and Mckercher where they start off a HB line abd it really settles them into the mold of AFL at the highest level. There's a strong sense of protection in defence too and for an accumulator such as Jagga Smith, it's a move I'd strongly endorse as its become a proven model for this calibre of player and can even lend a hand in releasing others to work other means.
Sam Walsh is a prime example. One if the rarest of takes I agree with for Kane Cornes is that recently he said that Sam Walsh simply MUST take on a more Harry Sheezel format as a HF/mid player.
Cirnes went on to say that this should aid Walsh in minimising the reoccurring injuries and knocks that he gets from the midfield as its really about a 70% HF role with 30% midfield.
Think that's a really strong take and probably a smarter one too cause Carlton need Cripps, Walsh, Curnow and Weitering to win a premiership IMO. Won't happen without any of them and playing them positionally smarter might just be the key to Pandora's box.
Question to you Pommy. IF jagga goes HB and Walsh 70/30 for HF/mid role who fills in the mid rotation of Walsh's absent 70% in the midfield?
Love your thoughts. For mine I'd like to see cerra and Elijah massively bulk up the mins, Elijah for me is the natural football iq that could be a total game changer
Hi mate, I first saw you on the coaches panel few days ago and thought Id look at the rest of your channel and I love the content and proper detail you provide. I was seeing some news the Silvagni was also going to be playing this year in defense? Whats your take on him and the role he could potentially have, have you heard anything? Appreciate your opinions
Hey man welcome. I think he'll be fighting for that 3rd role, I could also see him being a chb as we have traditionally gone kemp McGovern weitering floating into the chb spot and full back. Ideally if sos can become a Murphy type defender that locks the oppo down and allows weiters and McGovern to attack the ball we will really be onto something
@@PommyinOZ what of Young? I know a lot has bdeen said (against him) but in the last few games he played he seemed to have more confidence and poise - which was his Achilles heel, I believe. JSoS is too slow for a backman for mine and is a much better 3rd forward option - esp. now we have lost Martin. Just curious, it might be worth a try, if Young got some confidence he could be an integral part of the defence, he has the skills.
He would also be in the mix but was just answering the question as to where jack could potentially play be one of them 3 spots
@@PommyinOZ Yes, but I do think Jack's ability to hit the scoreboard outweighs his place in defence. He's been used too long as a "jack-of-all-trades" and now needs to settle in a spot. This year - I believe - is the crunch year for JSoS. His "snake in the grass" old man is out to poach him. Jack needs a big year because, as we've seen, not even 30+ goals will guarantee you a contract extension.
Totally agree on Jagga and Walsh having time off ball which I think keeping Doc on the wing is important. Especiall since he's our go to mid depth now so will be needed plenty of times in the midfield and will have to cover that role anyway if he does start down back. Would be happy with Jagga off half back or half forward over lapping and rolling on to the wing, but I also think Ollie will be down back as that runner, Saad more defensive and Boyd probably as depth and not sure if they will run both Jagga and Ollie off half back. McGovern is the interesting one for me. Creative kick and likes to play loose. COuld play Haynes in Gov's role, Gov like Newy and the hope SIlvagni or DGB or S.Durdin are good enough at CHB (not sold on any tho). COwan could also have some games in that Newman role with McgOvern showing he can lock down medium players when played with other stalls too. Excited to see what creative moves the coaches come up with. Thanks for the vid Pom!
Much love mate. I agree a real chance to be exciting with its movement and method
I think in terms of being a known quantity that has leadership credentials Doc makes sense, I would put pomcotta in the conversation too he is obviously no slouch but you get the feeling they want to persist with him as predominantly a tagger although if needed he is the type that can do a job on a greene or pickett ect.
I do see Wilson getting games but how many and prominently he will feature only time will tell.
Newman has been a linchpin not easy to replace or replicate but to be honest whether he was there or not the issue still remains of the overall improvement and accountability of not just the back 6 but the mids, we where torn to shreds like a ham on Christmas day last year and the stats dont lie
Believe Alex is training full time mid/forward.
But yeah big ask leadership wise. But think it's a great opportunity to cement a young player in a role traditionally that's the quickest position
Ah wouldn’t be a Carlton preseason without a season ending injury would it? 😅
But I think once everyone settles down they’ll realise it’s just an opportunity.
I really like what you said about Binns, would love to see him come in.
Lucas crossed my mind as well, but it’s probably just a year too early.
Jagga seems the most logical if history means anything, Daicos & Sheezel both come to mind as guys who started at half back in their first year.
Regardless of who they go with, I’ll back the system and coaches to get it right.
Hahahaha were used to it now 🤣
I agree with you about Lucas. It's definitely a year too early for him to play in the big league. Personally, I think that Wilson is the Saad replacement going forward. Jagga is a midfielder... but rotating him off the halfback with Wilson and Lucas would be interesting.
A couple of names you left off... Harry Charleson and Matt Carroll. Both of them are natural HBF'ers and are good rebounders. Matt has been on the list for a year, unfortunately most of it injured and he's been with the train on group for the off-season. We have 3 picks to take at the PSSD and he could be one of them. I reckon we were going to take one in the PSSD and one in the MSD. But now we have one on the LTI list, I reckon we go with 2 and 1 at the MSD. We still need another tall defender so I reckon Denver Grainger-Barras and Matt Carroll.
It's going to be interesting over the next month I reckon.
Left off purely as covered them extensively in the draft year and for mine similar to Lucas but behind him at this stage, both (if matt comes back) need some continuity in the VFL before id thrust them into the spot light
@ someone over on BF said that Matt is definitely in with a chance of being re-rookied as a PSSS. I’ll definitely be watching the VFL games this year if he does. We have some talent in the VFL team this year. I’ll also be watching Ethan Phillips (former Hawthorn KPD).
Hope he does he's put some beef on loved him at Sandy
@ The brief footage I've seen of Matt suggests that he'll be a leader in the defensive line. The only thing that will keep him out is his hamstrings.
💙
💙💙💙
Billy Wilson as the starting half back & use Jagga Smith rotating off the bench as support. If necessary Sam Walsh can be put back there. I don’t think is a disaster it’s an opportunity. Nick Newman strikes me as a great mentor and future coach. Use him to develop the youth and make the best of this situation.
Facts opportunity said it psot season best case is we have players pushing saad Newman and doc out of the mix now is a grade A oppo
I think Docherty would slot into that roll, But i do like the Jagga idea. It's worked for the likes of sheezel & McKercher for north.
Agree mate think it's docs but would love us to keep him in original plan ahead of ball
If Carlton can go a season without having 8+ outs most games I reckon Carlton can finish top 4
Feels like a big if at the moment 🤣🤣🤣
Doc definitely needs to be rotated through that half back role if not permanently there
Doc like Newy is an on field coach an has aspirations to be a coach after his playing days
We definitely need a player like that in defence this yr with so many new faces in that area
Sos, Hollands and Haynes all fresh faces back there all in round 1 could definitely benefit from an on field coach type like Doc
I can see Doc roaring between half back and the wing as a defensive winger and maybe 5 minutes in the centre here and there
Deffo a hole in terms of leader qualities
You might have to add Harry too, let's hope he's not too bad.
Ollies kicking skills are woeful, let's hope that doesn't cost us goals
Fingers crossed for Harry
I’d be adding Jack silvagni into that mix
Can't see a 190cm plus player with the pace of a Renault espace play that role he'll be aiming 3rd
What your thoughts on jsos learning from haynes. Feel that's where jsos can add lots in his big year down back
@ Jack has the pedigree, look at what his father did. Steve silvagni was fullback in team of the century honours. The pedigree is there.
Yeah the shift down the back excites me with haynes there, see a lot of similar attributes that jack has but also some areas of expertise he can quickly add. Voss loves 1 tall 2 medium talls and jsos for me can become a defensively sound kemp
Newman, Saad and Walsh are Carlton's Achilles heel. If they lose more than one of these players then they are badly exposed. Jagga Smith will help to some extent, but he's still incredibly green.
Need at least 16 of that 23 to be steady all year for me.
O Hollands will step in
Love the love for Ollie
Is there any reason nobody is mentioning Nick Haynes? Is he a similar player? We already had to find a spot for silvagni and docherty as well.
Been playing majority of his last 2 years as the 3rd in the mcgovern spot so dont see us going with a taller player, intrigued with Doc purely as club were forthrite with him being a mid/fwd last year, and when he returned he played that role, Jsos youd expect playing in the key role at CHB which has been our concern for last 2 years
Maybe Sam Docherty or Billy Wilson I reckon
Love it mate
Sorry Pom I am still in cricket mode. Aussies win the Ashes again. BAnG ❗️
🤣🤣🤣
Teams will drag OH deep into defensive an exploit him in a 1 on 1 marking contest (especially in 4th Quarters). OH is a wingman and thats about it!
Will be something he has to learn. Don't mind the club looking at this role. He spent 2 years being the defensive protection of the half backs, saad is weak overhead too but the club negates it, all how you structure up. One thing I'll give Ollie for a wingman his bravery is up there with the best
@@PommyinOZ maybe its a valid discussion.
I see Doc or Ollie could backfill Newman in the back. This leaves room for Jagga or Campo to fill a wing. I feel sorry for Newman but he is getting old and we would need to look at replacing this year or next. I do not think it is a major millstone to overcome.
Opportunities there for staff to look at changing the movement patterns with a younger zippier player and also a chance for us to give a kid exposure,
@@PommyinOZ I think a good sign in the improvement of our list is we now have options. I few years ago if a key player got injured, we had nobody to backfill. We now have a options, and the hard point is deciding which approach to go for.
If's, buts, do this do that, put this one here, put this one there, what a load of crap we need stability, so what Newman is gone for the year just move on and find the best 22 players and above.
Cheers.
Continuity so important and something we ain't had for what seems like a long time
Boyd Wilson Doherty all ready made replacements. Not sure Ollie is a natural half back .
He basically played (ollie) that role all hear in transition though protecting everyone who over lapped so makes sense to me
@ fair call . He can run lines and is evasive as well . Be interesting year for sure .
Really should have a b&f win from 2023, 2nd place last 2 years, Newman was better than Weiters in 2023.
He's really understated in his output
@@PommyinOZ Statistically he is almost identical to Dan Houston, however I believe he is better defensively and his offensive game just keeps improving, should have an AA to go with that b&f as well, the most underrated halfback by a country mile.
“If they gave up pick 3 to play him on half back, why wouldn’t they have just gotten Houston instead??” - some Carlton fans, probably
Legit can see him playing hbf mid and round 7 people see houston lead pies to top of ladder going we sold the farm for a aldi version of houston
@@PommyinOZ Hahahaha there is no surer thing!
Can’t replace his onfield leadership.
What our club can do is stop allowing veterans to train in full scale match sim.
Enough!
I also think his calmness is a huge loss bloke genuinely is head up attitude
@ he also hits up Big H in time of need. They practice their set play before each game.
It wouldn't be Carlton without having some sort ofa drama preseason, we're not the blues for nothing.
hahahahha too true
How many supercoachers here watching this?
👀👀👀
Getting rid of another old plodder with no speed, replaced by a talented youth with pace out of half back and energy. Club already making room in the cabinet for #17, surely.
It's an exciting opportunity
@ Just need to weed out a few more old and slow guys and empower the young rebound slingshots from halfback. Teagueball is back, baby!
@Equality-7-2521 🤣🤣🤣 oh no
Pommy, I come from this as a non-Carlton person. For three years as the Blues have returned to prominence, injuries seem to constantly sabotage them. It must be bloody frustrating for you guys knowing that you are cruelled by injuries and as such, denied a real crack at the flag.
Yeah and it's bizarre how on time it seems. Like for me it's a question of is it robust players? Loads? Mismanagement etc seems to happen so frequently
@@PommyinOZ I have said this to my Carlton mates, You have the personnel to win the flag, but you need to keep your list healthy. Losing Charlie, TDK etc. , cost you last year. Good health is paramount for any team to mount a successful assault on the premiership.
@rationalroman3705 yeah it's one of them things. What's worse is this year it's blokes never traditionally injured 🤣🤣🤣
