He was popularly known as Lok Nayak as he was considered the people's leader. Jayaprakash Narayan was born in 1902 in Sitabdiara, Bihar. He was influenced by Marxist ideas in the USA and Gandhian ideology. He joined the Indian National Congress in 1929. In 1932, he got imprisoned for a year for participation in the civil disobedience movement. In 1934, he formed the Congress Socialist Party with the following members- Acharya Narendra Deva Ram Manohar Lohia Minoo Masani Achyut Patvardhan Ashok Mehta He eventually left the Congress Party and initiated an anti-Congress Campaign and formed the Praja Socialist Party in 1952. Jayaprakash Narayan was posthumously conferred with India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna (1999), for his "invaluable contribution to the freedom struggle and upliftment of the poor and downtrodden". In later years, he was the dynamic figure around whom a young socialist movement coalesced in the form of the Janata Party, giving India its first non-Congress government in 1977.
