The Taxi riddim is my favorite Sly and Robbie riddim. It's the simplicity of it that makes it ride so hard. From now on when we hear thunder, it's just Robbie getting tuned up! RIP to the bass legend and all around hero to reggae fans everywhere, the Great Robbie Shakespeare ❤️💛💚

Long Live Robbie Bassspeare! In my opinion one of the greatest examples of the brilliance of Robbie's approach combined with Sly's innovation are the "Nightclubbing" and "Living My Life" records by Grace Jones. The collections sound fresh and ahead of pack to this day. Nightclubbing is one of my favorite records of all time honestly.

An unbelievable stroke of luck for 2 bass players to be playing for the same artist on the same gig. You may notice the yellow speakers in the corner of the picture. The yellow speakers started appearing on stages all over the world after this day.

Oh wow...I was listening to a Reggae play list, and there was that piano lick in "A heart Made Of Stone!" ...instantly recognizable. And, Oooo...I know this bassline! I learned if from Don on TH-cam :)
I was a total newbie in Reggae music just a month ago approximately. Now it's familiar.
Now I know where you got the piano lick from in the backing track. So distinct...and I don't think I've ever heard it before in any other recording.

    Hey Don!
Thank you for this channel and great tribute to our late great Robbie. My former supervisor gave me a bass guitar and told me to try it, out of the blue. I've been learning Alto sax for about 5yrs and yet this bass surprise came up. I've been learning a lot from you and wondered why didn't I start earlier. Maybe I could be ringing the bass like a bell in a reggae band. Keep the lessons flowing as prescribed by His Majesty. Hope to see you at one of the reggae festivals. Irie and Raspect!

  • @trumpetplayer6397
    @trumpetplayer6397 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Man oh man... You got me interested in bringing out my long idle bass again.
Have played more bass the last few days than ever. Never played music on it before, just exercises and nonsense.
Now it's happening, even if I'm at a low level!
Definitely advanced enough for me. Not used to, as yet, to the emphasis on the back-beats 2&4, or other configurations.
Somehow it gives a feeling of liberation. Maybe that's what it's all about.

I’m still trying to learn their bass parts! I think my favorite is “What is Life”. Have you ever done a video like the top ten bassists in Reggae? I’m a lifelong learner. Thank you for teaching me.👍🏾

I'm still a lifelong learner. You're one of the lucky one's that got to see Bob in the flesh. How are you getting on with the parts? Are you learning by ear? I've never done a top 10 because I like to leave something for the viewers to take away and 10 take aways would make the video an hour long at least. I am plodding through all the essential reggae bass players I can think of one by one.

@@donstrumental8905 thank you, sir, for the kind words. It’s coming along😊. Despite studying music as a kid, I did not actually pick up a bass until perhaps five years ago. But yes, I am fortunate to have seen many legends perform: James Brown, Miles Davis, Michael Jackson, Prince etc. I prefer using tabs or notation. But sometimes that doesn’t sound or feel right. Ultimately, I trust my ears.

Don, thanks for these examples of 'the bass creator'. He is a legend. Really like your basslessons. I really like the way Robbie plays on the Nordub album. Out of the box and excellent. His creative approach to setting music ensures that this album has the right atmosphere.

Robbie's bass lines are the #1 reason I wanted to pick up the bass. I'm only a year into this journey and the resources you put out there are exactly what I've been looking for. The quality of the tabs, the backing music, and of course the videos are immensely valuable. Much respect!
p.s. would love to see you cover "Wings with me" by Ini Kamoze, and "Roller Skates" by Steel Pulse
