So cool you giving the older models a new lease on life and a good home. In today's throw away culture really good to see old school machines being made useful. Just because they don't have all the fancy bells and whistles does not mean their usefulness is not worth rehabilitating. Kinda like in the movie Seabiscuit, where Tom Smith says " You don't throw a whole life away just because it's a little beat up!"
Aaron John - thank you! People are beginning to realize that new machines are built with planned obsolescence. These vintage machines are actually outperforming them because they were built with quality and precision in mind.
I have the 306w and even though I bought a new mechanical Janome, I will keep the Singer 306w because it has a larger space under the arm than most modern machines, so if you ever sew anything big like a quilt you will have more capacity for the rolled up part.

Nice machine, I just got a 319W to restore ( it's a mess, hope to save it). I did notice that your zig-zag mechanism is missing a knurled knob on the left side (mine was missing). It controls a movable detent/stop for the zig-zag. I did see a zig-zag assembly on E-bay and it was missing this very knob so I think it's a commonly lost part with no availability. Watching other videos of machines with this knob present and being a hobby machinist I was able to make a reasonable facsimile. So many times working on these vintage machines fasteners are non-standard so running to the hardware store is of no help. Sometimes overcoming the challenges is part of the fun !

What kind of thread should I use to sew leather? No solution found yet.

Hi there. What an excellent overview of the 306w or 306k as it is here in Australia. This is the best review (without a doubt) I have seen to-date. Can I clarify the alternative bobbin you used such that you could utilize the full range of modern 15x1 needles.... was it a brother pr600, I see they are readily available on ebay and this would provide a great solution to the otherwise very limited range of the 206x13. Also you mention swapping out the original foot control for a modern one, can I ask what you recommend please? Oh, do you know how to drop t he feedogs on this machine to do free-motion machine embroidery by any chance please? Anyway.... I'm so happy to have found your video. New subscriber here from Australia. Kind regards Nicola
Nicola Brewer - Hi there! So sorry I missed this message. To answer your questions - Yes, the alternative bobbin is for the PR600. Bobbin Case #XC7206001. For the Foot Pedal - Look up "Featherweight Foot Control Pedal PFW-196131". It uses the same foot pedal as many other Singer models: 27, 66-6, 15-88, 15-90, 15-91, 15-96, 201, 201K, 206, 206K, 221 Featherweight, 221-1, 222, 275K, 285K, 301, 301A, 306, 309, 319, 320, 401, 404, 411, 431, 1200-1. And runs about $32.00. For dropping the feed dogs - I can't remember and I don't have this machine anymore to look and refresh my memory. But take a look underneath - it will be on the left hand side. You look for a single large thumb screw. If it has that, that will most likely be how you drop the feed dogs. Just turn the screw and it will drop. If you need more help, find me on Facebook. That is where I usually am. I only post up big videos here and am not very active here. Look up "Dawn Champion, Norco, CA". There you can send me photos/questions and I can help guide you further. Good luck!

To get the original bobbin case, you need to try to get an original part - not a replica. To switch to another kind of bobbin case - that's what I explain in this video and in the description.

Steve Schklar - hmmm...bobbin tension is solely on that screw of the bobbin case. Check that the screw isn't stripped and seated properly...and that you're turning the right screw. Maybe check that you are routing the thread properly through all the channels of the case and the orientation is correct. That would affect it too...

Hi. I have my grandmother’s 306W and your video was extremely informative. All the wires on mine are stiff, cracked and peeling, so a true fire hazard, if the motor works at all. (I don’t dare plug it in) I was wondering if a crank handle could be added for manual operation. If yes, is there a particular crank handle you recommend?
I just tested it out. I used a thick thread (No. 30) and the kiln didn't turn. So I used to use the same thinning room and the kiln turned around. Is that the way it is?
I bought the bobbin case XC7206001. additional 1. The original 306W bobbin case and XC7206001 case are slightly different. The original 306W bobbin case has an empty space on one side, and the XC7206001 case has no empty space. Does this difference allow you to use 15x1 needles? 2. 206x13 needle length and 15x1 needle length are different. So a longer 15x1 needle can be used for 306W through the XC7206001 case? (But we still don't know the difference between the 306W limited bobbin case and the PR600's XC7206001 bobbin case, where you can use the needle 15*1 as an alternative. I'm curious, too.)
Thank you for this excellent video. I'm trying to help my wife sort her problem with the tension of the bobbin thread. Top works fine but bobbin thread seems to have very little or no tension. We tried tightening the screw in the bobbin cover but it doesn't help. Where else can I look or hat might I try? Thanks in advance!
@@DawnSChampion Thanks, I have checked the threading twice. I will do more checking of the screw, need to find the proper size screw driver, thanks!
Steve Schklar - you're welcome!
Hi is it hard to find parts ? And did you think is it possible to print the black Back to have patern if the owner loose it? I’m leaving in France and tomorrow I going to brought this great machine for 200$ the brown one.
You can find parts on Ebay. I'm not sure about the rest. Congratulations!
@@DawnSChampion this machine looks amazing in a great condition I so impatient 😁
Excellent!. Just got one myself. What is the thickest bonded nylon thread that could be used reliably? Thanks
I had no trouble with V92
Is that the way it is?
bu young Kim - yes.
I bought the bobbin case XC7206001.

1.
I feel like I can't do anything, and I wanted to use the XC7206001 case to add a 15x1 needle.
Can I ask you for a more detailed description or video of how to use the XC7206001 case?
And there's a message for someone else below.
I bought a Brother / Babylock XC7206001 from eBay and it did not have the low right guide post that Fit the Singer 173058 bobbin case, so it did not fit.
This is question number one above.
The new case should allow you to use the longer needle. Just put it all together and turn the handwheel. You should see that it works.
@@DawnSChampion Thank you very much.
I asked you because I was curious about why there was an empty space on the lower right side of the bobbin case. (I still want to know the difference.)
It doesn't matter if the needle length in the new case is longer, right?
What type of bobbin case does this use? I just got one, but need to get a bobbin case

Why can't I find my 306W listed on date made. have 2
Have 2 # 105184 and W1596800
Hey Dawn, how much might this be worth today?
Thank you for the video. I have a 306m Italian production from my mom. I'm looking for a bobin winder replacement. Are there some online shops for spare parts of this vintage machine? Thank you.
I do not know...I find stuff for them on Ebay...
Thank you for adding this video! I’m having an issue with my singer 306k... I used this machine for years and just today I pulled it out after not using it for 12 years. I have threaded the machine properly and unfortunately the needle is not moving up and down with me turning the wheel on the right. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this what am I doing wrong? Thank you from Canada!
Sandra DelFiacco - it probably needs a thorough servicing. Oil and grease goes bad over time and locks up the gears and all that.
Vyshtia Thank you I was fearing that you would say that. I thought there might be a quick fix as I was hoping to make some facemasks to donate during this time. Will be very difficult to find someone to service with all essential services opened only ...thank you
Hi,have you checked to see if the machine is set to wind the bobbin loader.if so the needle will be disconnected from the motor..try tightening the ring on the end of the hand wheel as the person did on the video .hope this is some use to you .Larry
Is the clutch unscrewed? Unscrew the clutch to load a bobbin, easy to forget to tighten it up after loading a bobbin.
Hi @Vyshyia! I am from Indonesia. I have sewing machine exactly like yours, 306W. But the timing belt is worn and broken. Can you tell me where to buy the new one?

Can you tell me what the bobbin case was that your updated the machine with? I’m going to get a 306 today and would like to do the update. Love your video. It is what convinced me to go ahead and get the machine.

@@DawnSChampion thank you!!
what does the base measure ?
Tank u so much for dis video....but I hv questions to ask
Can this machine use the thicker threads and needles to sew upholstery fabrics ?
I just completed some sail repair and a sacrificial sun cover with mine v92 thread, multiple layers of dacron and sunbrella. Replace the foot pedal as she mentioned. I ended up putting on a higher output motor as well... punched through 4-6 layers all day and even did 12-14 occasionally (ends of the sail) without too much manual stitching.
What does the letter mean after 306? 306 W?
👌👐😍
My mom got dis singer 306 and I watched ur video...got an idea on how to use it.... But my thread cuts all d time ...why?
Edith Onwuka - could be a bunch of different reasons. Are you using the right size needle and everything is set up like shown here?
Would something like this be heavy duty enough for heavy denim or leather?
Denim and light leather would probably be at the top of its ability. If you are just doing that every once in a while, probably no problem. But if you're doing it all the time, it would be best to get a machine that's made to work on those.
This machine will do just about anything you want. I have seen lots and lots of fine to heavy duty over 65 years of use. Raised 7 children made all their clothes , my husband's shirts and all mine. EVERYTHING from diapers to wedding dresses. 6 girl's
Help, how do you thread the bobbin and which bobbins can be used? From the top over or from under. I can’t figure this out:(
These SINGER are strong, but their problem is getting a new needle and bobbin case.
My 306 doesn't have Cams.
Is there a charge for these instructions
What kind of bobbin can you use in order to use standard needles?
