Outstanding! I can connect with the mission of these Marines. In 1967, during time between combat tours in Vietnam as a grunt, I served in an Military Police company on MCB Camp Pendleton. Part of our duties was to provide men for burial details honoring Marines killed overseas. I was on the rifle detail (volley party) of seven Marines to provide the solemn 21 gun (three volley) final salute. Those Marines had families who were present for their burial. To this day, I can still remember the anguished wails of sorrow as the families watched their loved one lowered into the earth. Having survived a tour of combat, in my mind was the thought "There, but for the Grace of God, goes me!" A sobering thought. These Marines do God's work, looking out for those deceased servicemen and women who had no one known to claim and honor them. The bugler playing "Taps" still brings a tear to the eye, even if I don't know the fallen person. 'Tis a pity that there isn't a good piper to play "Flowers of The Forest" for them. Of course, that might be somewhat problematic, since that lament is traditional for British Commonwealth forces but not the American Armed Forces. Although I am an American, I do so love the pipes. ~Semper Fidelis~
A very moving tribute indeed. Gone, but not forgotten. These things matter. Thanks for this, Tress.
