I'm Molly, a typical sushi, makeup, and fashion loving millennial girl who just so happens to be blind! I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at just 4 years old and began public speaking at age 5. I started just doing motivational speaking, but now I make videos and even model! Even though I can’t see, I know that there are bright spots in everything we face. Let’s find them together. 💕

I'd recommend speaking to a pharmacist about dissolving the inside of capsules in water. even if they do dissolve, it might not be the best choice. Often the capsule is for protection, especially from stomach acid, so removing it can make the medication less effective. Similarly tablets often have protective coating and despite having a ridge, most should not be split. They are meticulously designed and should not be altered without consulting someone who has training in this field, meaning a pharmacist. They will help you find the best, comfortable and safest solution. (Patient compliance and how to accomodate you is something they get trained for. Inabity to swallow certain shapes is a common hurdle and there's ways to help)

    • @yourdailyinsanity
      @yourdailyinsanity 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You're mostly right about the capsules, but the solid pills there's no issues with. It's an issues if they're crushed, but breaking in half there's nothing wrong with it.

    • @Rosie-yt8nd
      @Rosie-yt8nd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@yourdailyinsanity if the pills have a protective coating, breaking in half IS an issue because it changes how fast you absorb it. and most pills do have that coating. so they shouldn'T be split unless explicitly stated that it's fine. the indentation in the middle is for easier swallowing and looks, not splitting

  • @tiffany02020

Yeah the tilting ur head forward hack is a good one. Ppl with dysphasia (trouble swallowing, usually seen in elderly ppl) are encouraged to tilt their head forward while drinking. I used to work at a long term care facility and had to help lots of elderly ppl take drinks and eat and such and this was a common practice to prevent choking.
It more specifically closes off ur airway in a good way (like you can still breathe obviously) so the food or liquid doesn’t “go down the wrong pipe” and they don’t choke. This is why it’s really dangerous to do the whole “catch food in the air” thing teenagers do. Catching something flying into your mouth with ur head tilted BACK and ur airway wide open is asking for a choking incident. Always freaks me out when I see folks doing that haha.

Your pill story is so relatable to me. As an adult I am SO bad at taking pills to the point that I had to get a pill cutter to carry in my purse. Twice I almost choked on a Tylenol pill. I am a second grade teacher and once in front of my students a Tylenol got lodged in my throat and trying to hide that from 7 year olds is a nightmare. The second time I was alone in my classroom on my planning time and thought I would be found choked on a pill! Now I am 17 weeks pregnant and have had horrible nausea and got prescribed the smallest pill ever for nausea, and you better bet that I still choke on it. Then that makes me more nauseous and I have even thrown them up several times 🤣 I'm glad I'm not alone in the pill issue. I also remember choking on pasta when I was little and throwing up all over the table at a restaurant. 🤦‍♀️ My poor parents lol!

@@hayleeandari1 As someone who's dealt with anxiety about taking pills since childhood, "calm down" is honestly not helpful. I know you mean well - and for someone who's just a little nervous it's probably fine - but for people with real issues around taking pills, it comes off as pretty dismissive.. OP is almost certainly having a psychosomatic response based on their anxiety, so just telling them to calm down is really unlikely to be useful.. Just something to think about with using that kind of language!

I've choked a ridiculous number of times, to the point where I know instantly it's going to stick and immediately hork a bunch to keep it from lodging. (I have EDS, and I have problems swallowing sometimes.) The scariest by far was a butterscotch candy. I was home alone, back in the day of no cell phones, and I choked, complete obstruction. I had taken first aid classes (Mom taught them for the red cross), but they focus on OTHERS choking, not HOME ALONE choking, but I remembered an anecdote at one of the classes where someone had choked on pizza at a party in a foreign country, no one was understanding, and they dislodged it using the back of a hard wooden chair. So I stood up and rammed my diaphragm repeatedly into my chair while bending over the back of it, and it worked. Hurt. Oh, it hurt. But it worked. As soon as I could breathe, I bawled, full out. I was like, 10? And then my parents weren't home for another hour or so. Latchkey kid!

Omg this literally JUST happened to me two days ago and it was TERRIFYING!! I couldn't breath at all. Not even a little bit! I've done it before so I just tried to stay calm and repeatedly swallow to get it to go down. It wouldn't though after 10 seconds. I shot up from the couch in a complete panic and stumbled over my dog or kids toys idk which and fel hunched over. I kept swallowing harder now and it went down. I gasped and my husband freaked out bc he didn't know what was happening yet. He had his face in his phone lol. I told him and at that moment I taught him the Heinrich maneuver both on a person and over a chair.

One time I was at chipotle but also didn't know then universal sign for choking. I ran outside and rammed myself into the fence and puked up everything. It was horrifying. It scarred my throat badly and I had pain for years in that spot after that incident. I choked again once on pills and do the same thing, open up the capsules even tho it tastes horrid and it is messy. Im so sorry you had to experience this too!!! I have this issue too. I have choked numerous times, a few times just swallowing my own saliva and it going down the wrong pipe. My husband saved my life with the Heimlich Manuever about 10 years ago. It was crazy. I was choking, tried to drink water, couldn't swallow the water because my throat was completely blocked off, and so I spat it out on the floor. He saw what was happening, I stood up and he did the Heimlich maneuver 3-4 times, which opened my air way. He saved my life!! It was surreal. Now he's afraid and tells me not to eat when he isn't home, lol. Thankfully we both work from home now.
I've had many other choking/coughing incidence since I was a child, but never to the point of needing assistance before...except when I was a baby. I stopped crying mid cry in my crib at about 5 months old and my parents ran in. I was choking on a mucus plug. My mom called 911 and my dad started pounding on my back. I turned blue and he thought I was going to die so he hit me hard on the back and I started screaming. So he saved my life too! Btw, this is a good reason not to let a baby "cry it out" which is what they were doing because I was a fussy baby. My pediatrician told my mom he thought some cases of SIDS were mucus plugs. Needless to say, I wasn't let alone to cry again.

a lot of people in my family have Eosinophilic Esophagitis which basically causes severe choking frequently and it actually super common it affects every 1 in 2,000 people. Basically, it causes a build up of eosinophils in your esophagus which narrows the passage and causes food to be lodged in your esophagus much more easily than someone who does not have this disease.

Molly, you are correct with both your questions on the Heimlich maneuver. It is no longer called the Heimlich, it is called abdominal thrusts. Also, when I did CPR training, we were trained to do back blows. These are a specific way to basically smack someone on the back, but it is important to hold the person a certain way and use force. After receiving abdominal thrusts or performing them on yourself, it is important to get medical attention.

I have a lot of trouble taking pills. Most things can be emptied (capsules) or ground up, and dumped into a couple ounces of apple sauce. Whether or not it dissolves, the applesauce is chunky enough to not notice. Time-release stuff usually won't work correctly if you do this, though.

19:02 That's how it is for me too. One big trauma changed the way my brain responds to all other stressors. I'm glad you're at a point in your journey where you are aware of it and can accept it without judging your brain for how it works

I actually have a phobia of taking pills altogether even as a 22 year old. Like even a small pill if I’m really desperate it will take me a good 15 minutes to try. But I discovered if u put the whole pill in a spoon of applesauce you can’t even tell its there and my anxiety goes away. Poof magic.

Just hearing this makes me feel panic! It seems like it's a shock I don't know anyone who's died from choking. Although, after chocking on pills myself, the only way I can do it is chew a half orange wedge or other soft food, put the pill in my mouth, then mix it with the chewed fruit, and then it swallows so easily because it's so slippery! Try it, Molly, and see if it works for you?

Heimlich is still a good thing to do for a choking ADULT. Back blows are good for everyone, babies included. Five hard blows with the heel of the hand near the middle of the back or bra strap line. Always good to know! And if you are alone, you can self rescue by driving the back of an object like a chair into your upper abdomen is a similar way you would do the Heimlich.

Choked badly twice. First time on an aspirin. I had a migraine and the pill got stuck. Couldn't get it down. It finally dissolved enough so I could breathe but I panicked until it did. It burned my throat and traumatized me to this day 40 yrs later. I still cannot swallow tablets, or big honking pills, only capsules. I have choked them up when I try. I have a pill crusher and cut up some into pieces. Second time choking was on a piece of meat. I swallowed a bit of what was in my mouth but they were still connected by gristle to the rest in my mouth. I choked and freaked out, jumped up, reached in, and was able to pull it out by grabbing halfway down my throat what I could reach and pulling. I now make sure to NOT swallow any stringy, gristley bits. That has transferred to beans with the stringy parts. I leave those on the side of my plate-discretely- instead of swallowing them because, ptsd.

You have to be careful opening capsules, some capsules are made so they dissolve at different places in the system, like some capsules are made to withstand stomach acid and go further in the system

I have many times choked, but not on something but because of astma.
I remember once getting a cold and waking up during the night unable to properly breathe. I was ofc terribly frightened so while hysterically crying I went down the stairs to my brother's room.
I did not have a inhaler at the time since my parents had neglected to renew the recipe for the medicine.
So all I could do was try my very best with muscles shaking from exhaustion was to take another sip of air and cry.
My brother didn't care and I would rather choke than wake up my parents and face their wrath.
So I sat there choking and crying the entire night.
The feeling of choking is indeed terrifying wether it is because your airways are blocked or other reasons.
I am sorry if this is triggering to anyone but, it is a story about choking and it fits the theme.

I think I have dysphagia because I am always choking too. Usually its just that annoying feeling until it goes down, but I've had multiple more dangerous experiences like you. An ice Cube, A protein bar, Spaghetti (TWICE) , but the absolute WORST was a 200 mg Ibuprofen. Yes I know those things are SMALL. But somehow it lodged in my throat just like the med you took did. The water I drank with it all came back up because it couldn't go down past the ibuprofen. I couldn't breath or swallow or drink to push it down so I started to panic. My mom started hitting my back and my dog was jumping up on my back too (if I wasn't dying it would have been so cute. she's so smart and knew how to help me). Thankfully my mom eventually dislodged it by doing the heimlich manouver although she probably didnt even do it correctly. I also have PTSD like you and now even small traumas get stored in my brain in a weird way. I CANNOT swallow any pills biggger than the standard ibuprofen...which sucks because that is SO SMALL. I have to cut any pills in small pieces and take capsules through water like you described. anyway, you aren't alone, I also choke all the time and my ptsd also gives me weird anxiety about things that might seem small.

I’ve only choked seriously once- on honey. It’s scary because there isn’t anything to cough out or swallow all the way. I drank a lot of water but still didn’t feel like my throat went back to normal for a few hours after.

Bugger was the first word I thought of when I saw the title of this video. Choking is not fun. I can so relate to the pill get stuck in my throat for a while on the way down. It normally happens to me when I take my celery tables and the aftertaste is disgusting and last for hours. I am just glad that you were ok at the end of every incident.

We used to put my brother’s capsule medicine in applesauce or pudding. It might be better than opening it straight into your mouth since it doesn’t dissolve in water.
Also, if you take a pill with a straw it also opens your throat. It can help with keeping your head down to take the pill.

I get you Molly, I deal with a lot of pill anxiety to the point I wasn’t able to take any form of pill till I was 18 even though I’ve never choked with one. I am able to take pills now but I really struggle with bigger pills because I fear I would choke.

I too frequently experience getting pills stuck on the way down and it's awful! I have to take my meds in a couple handfuls instead of all at once now, but even that way the second batch has a harder time going down cuz it's like my throat knows what's coming and tries to just block the pills from going anywhere lol

My mom and I have a hard time swallowing pills. My late aunt (my mom's sister) also had a hard time swallowing pills, too. We're not sure if it's just us or if we have small throats or what. Any time I have a pill that I need to take that is in capsule form I either have to chew it or dump the contents of the pills into a soup or a smoothie so I can drink it.
That lollipop choking episode sounds terrifying. Thank goodness your dad noticed that was happening and was able to get help.

I only remember choking on one occasion. I was very young and I was with my mom and dad on the road. I was in my car seat and I was drinking some juice in a cup. I always had and still do have a fixation with chewing ice (even though I know it's not good for your teeth) so I opened up the cup and took out a cube of ice to chew it. It got stuck in my throat and my mom CLIMBED OVER TO THE BACKSEAT to get to me (my dad was driving) and she dislodged it.

I no longer take pills either, are used to take pills when I was younger and had no problems swallowing them, then I had an accident where I almost choked and ever since then whenever I need to take a pill I use the liquid form, except for my special pill which luckily is tiny enough to not bother me, but when it comes to Panadol or any other pills I need to take I try to find alternatives now, so I completely understand the struggle and fear of swallowing pills, especially the bigger they are.

For future reference, there is a way to do the Heinrich maneuver on yourself with the back of a chair. This saved my life when I was like 12 and ate a piece of candy. I was surrounded by friends, I did the universal sign of choking. They thought I was joking around! Never in my life have I ever joked about that. But I managed to do that and get it out. Then I yelled at my friends because seriously, I’m choking there and you’re going to laugh your butt off? But yeah, there’s a way to do it on a chair.

I learned another thing that also relate to lean forward not backwards if someone experience a nose bleed. Because if you lean back the blood flows back, which you don't want. When you lean forward the blood flows out, still good to plug it with cotton & leaned while forwards.

Maybe you can make some type of family code out of the situation in case it ever happens again like throwing something hard if possible followed by banging on a wall or clapping hands, any type of unusual sound. Maybe make a pattern to it like 2 bangs or claps, pause, and two more bangs or claps. This could be especially important if it’s your mom who’s choking and needs an auditory way to tell you something's wrong.

I also take my capsules and tablet medicine with water, and I sometimes do look more to the floor when swallowing. I don’t like capsules though, because it takes more practice to get it down before desolving.
