The unique thing about their Kiss is that It is a good bye kiss for Pen. She is giving up on him, on this love, on Hope. And for him It was a moment of Clarity. He realized that he feels more than friendship for Pen. How beautiful is that? Poetry.

I have to agree with you here they both had different reactions. It’s crazy, I felt so bad for her when she initially asked him but after I was like ohhhh Colin you are over.

idk if you noticed because it was so quiet (i didnt know until i looked it up) but when Pen is talking to Lord Remington (the one who loves gossip) and Colin was looking at them, an orchestra version of Jealous by Nick Jonas was playing in the background

Colin wasn't laughing at her when he made that joke about her already being dead- he was trying to make *her* laugh, to make her feel better. Colin is never laughing at Penelope. He takes her and her feelings very seriously, more so than anyone else in her life.
The following is something I've been thinking about and bothered by a lot lately- it's not directed at you, but I just need somewhere to say it! So thanks in advance for coming to my TEDtalk! 🙄😂
I think it's important for us to remember that Penelope is our viewpoint character, and she's not always right in her interpretations of things (especially Colin). When he follows her out of the ball and compliments her dress, she thinks he's mocking her. When he wants to go talk to her alone, she assumes it's because he's embarrassed to be seen with her- meanwhile we the audience just saw him interrupt a conversation with two men to ask after her, and when they tried to brush it off, he straight up ditched them to go check on her, with no pretense whatsoever. He's clearly not ashamed to be seen with her. But too many people just accept Penelope's take on the situation because she's our viewpoint character, and we feel for her pain in this moment. It's kind of like she's our unreliable narrator.
The same can be said for what happened at the end of season 2. Everyone accepts her assumption that Colin was being cruel and laughing at her with those men, without questioning it. And the writers clearly meant to make it seem that way- after all, misunderstandings are a romance writer's bread and butter. But if you look at it objectively, rather than through the lens of Penelope's broken heart, it's not so clear cut.
Did Colin actually imply that Penelope was undesirable (which seems to be everyone's take)? Or did she/we just assume that's the reason behind his denial? Was he actually laughing at her? Or did she/we just assume that their laughter was at her expense?
If you had a close friend who you saw as a brother/sister, and people asked if you were dating, you might laugh it off and say "I would never" simply because of the nature of your relationship. And no one would take it as you laughing at them or saying they are un-date-able. Unless your friend was secretly in love with you and overheard you. They might take it that way.
And consider what we know about Colin's character and history... is he the kind of man who would openly mock any woman in this way, let alone one of his best friends who he's super protective of? Of course not. Have we ever seen anyone say anything negative about Penelope (whether Penelope herself, Whistledown, or anyone else) when Colin's response was not immediately jumping to her defense? And had he not just promised to always look after her at that very same ball, probably less than an hour before?
And yet people have no trouble believing that in this moment, he was just making fun of her to a random group of guys for laughs. Because we're seeing all this through Pen's eyes. Her hopes had risen so high only to be dashed in such a brutal way. Her heart is breaking in real time, and ours are breaking with her. So she jumps right to the most painful, hurtful conclusion, as people do. And we jump right with her.
But Colin has only ever been looking out for Pen. It's one of his defining traits. And my man gets a raw deal when people see Penelope's character and arc in all their beautiful complexity and nuance, but only see Colin through the reductive lens of the popular, handsome, rich boy with a side of male privilege.
Again, thanks for coming to my TEDtalk! None of this was directed at you... I've just been watching a lot of reactions lately and it finally boiled over!!
I'm really enjoying your reactions so far! I can't wait to watch the rest of the season with you!

love your take on El and Pen's friendship breakup because that's how i feel. I love Pen of course but I can't help but also side with Eloise. she had every right to feel betrayed

I agree every single right and I think Pen knows he was wrong as well.
