  • Something I never knew about Cape St Francis was that it was a great surfing destination. Apparently when the conditions are just right the waves are spectacular for surfing. I also found it very interesting that the "Cape" of Cape St Francis indicates that the town is situated on a headland, a piece of land which protrudes into the ocean, also known as a cape. The natural beauty in this area was amazing and the atmosphere is so laid back, it definitely rubbed off. Then we decided to visit St Francis Bay, which is literally a hop, skip and a jump away and the first place we stopped at was Port St Francis, which is a fantastic place. Then the stunning drive through the village with its pretty thatched roof houses followed. This was an awesome visit to these two neighbouring holiday towns in the Eastern Cape. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #capestfrancis #stfrancisbay #holiday #eaterncape

    Apologies to all our viewers!
Through the camera lens, I mistakenly read 'southernmost' instead of 'southeastern most' at the lighthouse and didn't even realise it in the editing process.
Thank you for the correction. 😊

    I love your videos.
I found your channel by accident and have been watching your videos all afternoon. The first video I watched was Orania, and now can't stop watching. I was born in Zim but moved to South Africa when I was about 11. I lived all over SA. But for the last 24 years, I have lived in the UK. I miss home so much. I class home as SA. (I have stage 4 cancer and so for the last 4 months or so I have not been able to walk.)
Your videos are fantastic, they bring back so many memories. Thank you.

Hi you two wandering souls.. this was a very hard one to watch, could only watch halfway 😄 but I'm back with you, along for the ride.. Seal Point used to be home.. i spent many wonderful hours on the wild side of the lighthouse, in the stunning rockpools and exploring every nook and cranny.. the view from the top of the lighthouse is incredible, can see Oyster bay clearly from up there.. I wonder if you can still go up .. the light is huge.. my friends father used to be the lighthouse keeper back in the day . She grew up living in most of the lighthouses along the Cape Coast as the lighthouse keepers only worked each lighthouse for four years at a time..hence they moved alot growing up, he retired at Seal Point lighthouse.
St Francis Bay used to belong to the Hulett family, It was a requirement that you could only build with thatch roofs and all the houses had to be painted white.. later, probably after a number of very bad fires, people were allowed to use black slate.. back then it's was a quaint little place, made up of mostly holiday homes.. it's grown vastly since ..they were busy building St Francis Port when we were there and I think started operating just before we left. After that it started growing in leaps and bounds, I hardly recognise it now. Same as Seals.. I think there were only one or two double storeys at the time..now I see there's a whole row of them.. you could see the sea from all the roads then, with no obstruction... Have a happy day.. happy travels 🚗✨💖

We didn't mean to make you sad! 😏 I believe one can still climb the stairs to the top of the lighthouse, but with our four knees, the up will be tough going. I can only imagine the view from up there though. How cool to live in lighthouses and to move from one to the other, I could most certainly have done that a good few years ago! Thank you so much for sharing your memories and knowledge of these two villages, they certainly seemed to have grown and changed a huge amount over the years, but fortunately still very beautiful. 🤩🚗

Hi Everyone @ Dust Bugs Travel You bring back very very old good memories of Cape St Francis and St Francis Bay I Stayed there for a holiday in the 1970's and there was nothing no golf courses no hotels and about four small houses upside down houses and A Frame houses Upside down houses was because of the Big Wind Storms and if your back door downstairs was open in the wind the house would break and fall over so instead the kitchen and the back door being downstairs your kitchen and back door would be upstairs and the lounge and dining room upstairs to get the Beautiful View now there was no electricity only gas for house lights and the lighthouse which used to be bought from Humansdorp which also just had gas in those years the roads look a bit better in your Beautiful Video but they are terrible clay roads which were very slippery and there was only a small shop in Cape St Francis to buy basics eg sugar eggs milk bread and the shop was the only one which had an old wind up phone and then one would have to ring the exchange to ask for a number please the exchange would ring you back with the other person on the line Gary Player did all the planning for the two golf courses there was no radio no tv no newspaper U use to be a life saver and deep sea diver and then swam with the dolphins we also had a few African Penguins which use to rush up to the fishing boats and also the seagulls all come to the fishing boats with sardines in them they were cheeky and got a good feed and the sardines couldn't have been fresher than that then their is Yellow tail and Blacktail fish that we use to catch and the fisherman use to catch The beach sand in those years was white an unfortunately a few years later an oil tanker which was leaking oil came to near the beach and unfortunately some of the penguins had to be taken to vets because if oil the beach sand and sea was full of oil the beach sand made my feet black they had to take all the penguins to another place in Port Elizabeth to save the Penguins A few Years After that A Hotel was being built and Called Cape St Francis Hotel and then the Golf Courses it is amazing how it is built from Nothing there to what it is today I have only seen pictures Thank You So Much for Sharing Your Beautiful Video 👍👍❤️❤️

To Add on information about the Black thatching and black roofs is because the very first hotel was built by Mr Huelett Senior and it burnt down it was the first hotel with the that he'd roof and seventy six homes were burnt down as well in 2012 in ,2013 everything grass and roofs were black like coal and a Thatch Company were redoing all the thatched roofs and that house next to the lighthouse had windows of the very first lighthouse keeper 18th and 19th Century but the lighthouse had Stainless steel or metal steps going up to the lighthouse beam I see now the stairs have gone and has been ro aviated and made bugger still next to the old lighthouse keepers house in 18th and 19th centuries then the light house keeper told us divers that when he had children it was too all so they one of the first to build a thatched. roof house with gas lights and if it rained the River would flood and Sandy clay roads in those years you couldn't go anywhere there was a man who was in POrt Elizabeth as we were going shopping there because Port Elizabeth was the the nearest place to do shopping as Humansdorp also had no shops nothing so this man was from Gauteng With his registration number he had opened the door and the wind blew off the car door leaving the man holding the door in his hands now remember Port Elizabeth wasn't like it is today it also had one main shop for grocery shopping that's all so this man had to go to the shop and call AA and I was CB radio user so we stopped by him and called one of the other CB Users who was a car mechanic who was in the road not far from where we were he came to help the man and told him that he better not take a broken car round that area again as there is no emergency help in those years and we went on our way back to Cape St Francis hope you enjoyed your stay there and i was amazed to see on your video not only boat and yachts but many boats and yachts because the only place that yachts and boats was in Port Elizabeth the boat and yachts club was only in Port Elizabeth Thank You Again for showing how built up it is now and Sharing your Beautiful Video @ Dustbugs Travel 👍👍❤️❤️

That claim of being the southernmost tip of Africa is geographically incorrect. It actually happens at Cape Agulhas. Their map reading is in deficit. They should check with the hydrographer of the SA Navy. Which is what I did, but people love their (usually incorrect) opinions.

Thank you both for the memories. I surfed there in the 70 & 80's. The surfing spot in the proximity of the lighthouse is called "full stop rock" when the tide goes out the rock appears when you lest expect it. I used to work on the lighthouse buildings. Fun fact - Most lighthouse keepers were artists. Gets lonely out there.

Thank you for the interesting info about the tide, we never knew that! 🏄‍♀️ It would make sense that a lighthouse keeper would have to find different activities and hobbies to occupy their time. 😁🎑

It was our first time to these two villages and we weren't aware of any canals. Thank you for pointing that out, we'll make a point of seeing those when we return someday. We hope you enjoyed the rest of our video though. 😁🚗

There is something very wrong their claim of being the Southern most tip of Africa. It is glaringly evident if one looks at any map of the Southern Africa 's coast line.

Please refer to my pinned comment. I mistakenly read the board incorrectly. It clearly states the most southeastern point. Apologies for the confusion. 😊

The section of town is the white houses and buildings with either thatch or black slate roofs, which is the village and the canals, and then you get Santareme & Port St Francis where all the houses have terracotta colored tiles, and mostly the same color paint.
