- The Nerd is once more being called out to bust down more bad games based on Ghostbusters, as he looks at those made for the NES, Atari 2600 and SMS. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 22.
In the second part of the three part series, the Nerd gives an english lesson to the creators and designers of the original Ghostbusters NES game. Did nobody ever proofread these games?
The Nerd also reviews the Atari 2600 and Sega Master System versions of the game. He explores the subtle nuances of each game and the frustrations that lie within.

Why did the Ghostbusters games even have a stairwell section? The movie only shows the Ghostbusters climbing the stairs in one scene for a joke. They were making a game based on Ghostbusters and they thought that climbing stairs was the most compelling thing they could do?
That was something they added in the NES and Master System versions. The original version for Commodore64 didn't have the stairwell stage (and neither did the Atari, Amstrad and other versions).
At least there's no one trying to kill you on the stairwell in FF7.

Sorry for the stereotype, but in a lot of ways this is a very japanese game in all the wrong ways.

While I find this new information intresting, a quick Google search tells me this game was published by Activision, an American company.
Same thing with heroes at the bottom, there's an extra space. So that's another ten.
It WAS a Japanese game. That is where the errors come from. The title was released in America by Activision, but it was made by the Japanese company Bits Labartory, and published in Japan by Tokuma Station. Then it was published in America under Activision. So, no, it's not an American game.

"Conglaturation" is probably a East Asian guy making the L->R and R->L error, because (as I understand it), there is no distinction between those sounds in that language family.
The game was made by Japanese developers. I peeked in the ROM using a tile viewer and found Japanese characters among the English letters. This explains the extreme amount of Engrish in the ending.

7:45 - ohh, now I remember it! In the Commodore 64 version there's a key and a keyhole floating around the city map. Here it's a dude and a gal, it's the keymaster and the gatekeeper, not just some random people!

Strictly speaking the "prooved" should have been "prooven" because it should normally still follow the "have" from the previous part of the sentence. So there's no need to count the exclamation point error in order to have 0% on the spellcheck. *flies away in grammar Luftwaffe aircraft*

They look like banana peels fused with canaries to me, but still you’re right they do look like banana peels.
The C-64 version was at least playable, no gas station, no staircase, you buy your car and your stuff at the beginning of the game so there's no shop annoyance. You only have to go back to base to empty traps and you can have up to four. The bad part was that there was a certain point on the PK meter when every time you went somewhere on the map, Stay-Puft would show up and trample a building and the game would penalize you money. Since the game had you operating on a bank loan you had to have all your money before the PK meter hit 9999. So once you've caught enough ghosts to get the money back, your best strategy was to sit around and wait for the PK to build so you could go to the end. At the end you go to Zuul and you had to run past Stay-Puft one guy at a time, you get three chances and you have to slip two guys in. If you do win, the game gives you a little animation of the "Cross the Streams" thing defeating Gozer and you get an extra $5000. The idea is that the next time you play you have more money to spend on equipment or a better car, but all you need is the ghost vacuum, which catches map ghosts and slows down the PK increase and as many traps you can carry. The ghost bait just lures map ghosts away from Zuul and the marshmallow detector tells you when Stay-Puft is going to stomp a building. I never found any way to stop that from happening aside from not driving after 4000 PK units.
Yeah, it's a shitty game. Fortunately I also had Bruce Lee. =D
C-64 is a veritable treasure trove of shitty games. May I suggest reviewing Back to Reality or Rasterscan? I assure you, you will hate the piss dribbling fuck out of both! ^_~

In the movie, Mr. Stay Puft stepped on a church (which really set Ray off). In the game, the church next to the Zuul building appears to be present, but look how much smaller Stay Puft is in comparison.

The ghostbusters literally look like Luigi from the Mario and Luigi's Mansion games. Oh, and speaking of Luigi's Mansion, the Ghostbusters game was released 16 years before Luigi's Mansion! Coincidence, I think not.

Did you know that "Elvis lip" is actually done in the movie? There is a part, where Dana and Vigo are talking, and Dana I believe says she has been uncomfortable ever since the painting has been around. If you look close, you can see that Vigo is making that face in the movie and changes back as soon as Dana looks at him in that scene. Its really subtle look close.
The Apple II version wasn't much better than the NES version, but the graphics were far superior. The proton packs actually shot what looked like lightning bolts, you had to aim the traps and the car driving parts had an isometric appearance. The Ghostbusters all looked the same, again, but they were a bit more detailed.

Believe it or not, the Sega Master System version is older than the NES version.
The SMS version was released in 1987 and the NES version in 1988.

I've played some of these and let me tell you, they can get absolutely infuriating sometimes. I don't know how such an iconic movie can have so many awful games designed on it, especially since all these are officially licensed and produced by the big boys of the 80s and 90s. There were a-lot of bad games back in the day because of limitations, there is a Ghost Buster's game on the ps2 that I think is pretty good.
I had this game for The Commodore - It was a lot like the Sega Master System version.
The controls for sonic 06 is what killed it for me.

The Master System is slightly more powerful then the NES, which is probably why it''s more colorful.

On the ps3 version of ghostbusters, on one of the computers upstairs in the ghostbusters HQ has the ending to this game on the screen

these were actually made by a group of outsourced second-rate developers that had basically no impression of what Ghostbusters was. its most noticeable in the "Congladuration" part and the ending of the Sega version that not only had they never seen the movie, english was not the developer's primary language. there are numerous tell-tale signs of bad translation.
If that's the best people they could get to make the game, they shouldn't've bothered.
But money!
So when is someone gonna tell him that you can shoot straight on the Master System version of Ghostbusters' Stairs level

Actually you CAN shoot straight when you're going up the stairs on the Sega Master System version. Button 1 shoots straight and button 2 shoots upwards at an angle. I think the reason it leaves dots on the map when you plot your route is to show you how far you're going to drive, because it makes the driving scene take longer and sometimes the ghosts get away if you take too long. Also, in case you didn't notice, hitting a ghost on the map freezes it, and then it flies over you in while driving.

I wonder how in the hell did the AVGN miss that, I mean did he not try both buttons , he's probably jealous because he had to grow up with the crappy nes Ghostbusters while there was a better one for the Sega Master System. He's just trying to make the Sega Master System version of Ghostbusters look bad, when in real life its not.

There is no rule in the English language that says that you can't start a sentence with an "and". The way they did it was wrong but you are completely allowed to do it. Highschool teachers will often say you can't but that is more because students suck at staring sentences with "and" and if you let them then you will just get a bunch of papers that have the word "and" starting every second sentence.
Generally and is used to join two ideas. And two items as well.
So it dosnt make sense.
