Though, what he states in the video works best in English, and other languages that have a bit of room to play with. In Germany, unless stated otherwise, everything involving height is measured from NN (normal null), which is sea level. Something like Kea being higher will always be followed by "if we ignore the absolute standard". You can call Kea bigger, taller even, but you can't quite call it the highest peak

Mount Everest is the highest peak when considering altitude within the atmosphere, and it feels the most otherworldly because it is the closest to the point where the atmosphere ends and space begins

That's about a 30° pitch on average. The point of "highest mountain" is from sea level that's pretty much undisputed. That's because it's the main metric of where dry land can conventionally begin and thus the atmosphere can become thinner The relative ratio to the core arguably doesn't matter, add on top the fact that the atmosphere stretches along the equator as well, so you'd need longer to reach space proper as compared if you jetted off from the poles.
The problem with this line of measurement is that it inputs other factors asides from the mountains themselves. If we talk about mountain to mountain, Everest is shorter than the Hawaiian one. The core is even more relevant, because that determines which is the higher bump on the planet itself. Mountains are geologic phenomena, and using an external factor such as atmosphere is a copout. You are physically closer to the cosmos on top of Mt Chimborazo than Everest, and if 2 people were standing on them at the same time, the one on Mt. Chimborazo would me much higher. So objectively, Everest is certainly not the roof of the world.
That little aside reveals the subliminal truth behind the vast majority of such measuring contests, doesn't it? It's all simply a matter of... um... "projection". 😆

You're correct. If Mauna Kea can use the part of its mountain that's under water, then Everest should be able to use the part of the mountain that's beneath it in the continent. Everest is the tallest peak
The distinction is, if you dropped a ball at the peak and let it roll how far would it go? From Everest it would stop on land somewhere but in the case of Manua Kea it would just keep rolling down to the ocean floor. Guam actually has a vote in this since Mount Lam Lam could 'technically' roll right down to Challenger Deep.
@@postone2821 In way of determining it, Everest is definitely the tallest due to what Mauna Kea is. It's a giant shield volcano. The bottom of the volcano is where the magma first started emerging from emerging from the bottom of the ocean in the area and started depositing lava to build up to form the island and its current cone. That by definition cannot be nearly as deep as the tectonic plate root that forms Everest.
I've climbed Mt. Lamlam in Guam (US). Although it's peak is only 1,332 ft above sea level, Mt. Lamlam's base originates at the bottom of Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, making it the tallest mountain in the world, at 11,530m tall. I thought for sure this video would have mentioned Mt. Lamlam, but it didn't.
I also thought Denali would be in the video. You climb 6,000ft more when climbing Denali, technically making it a taller mountain that is shorter in relation to sea level.
well if you count whats under water, how do you know when to stop? where is the natureal place of "hey, this is the bottom of the mountain?", like the sea is when measuring peaks. plus, even if there was such a line, couldn't you technically count the depth of the waters around afro-eurasia into mount everest's height then aswell, meaning it is still taller than that hawaiian mountain
You missed McKinley. Mount McKinley, the mountain itself base to peak, not adding the range it sits atop, is the tallest mountain in the world that's fully above water. Every other mountain either cheats by using its range as a step-stool, or is underwater.
I was looking for this exact comment. By what most people think of as a mountain (big hill sticking out of the surrounding ground) I would most definitely say Mt McKinley is the tallest mountain.
Yeah thought of this too, but I also read that the Rupal face of Nanga Parbat is disgustingly large, where on this certain side the base camp sits at quite a low elevation. I read the wall is 4500m, not sure how that compares to Denali, but that's more gain than Everest.

@5:20 if we are to measure Mauna Kea from the bottom of the ocean, the perhaps Everest should be measured from the bottom of the land mass that it sits on, which probably has it's valley at the bottom of the Indian Ocean. As for Mount Chimborazo, try setting your altimeter at 6268 metres, then fly from Chimborazo to Everest, if you can safely make it over Everest, we will all know that Everest is not the tallest mountain peak, if you don't make it over Everest then, your family will (probably) get a lot of flowers sent to them.

No mention of Denali? Denali is taller than Everest if you measure them from base to peak, if they both sat at sea level. Everest's base camp is already at an elevation which requires acclimation.
If you also measure Everest's height from the bottom of the ocean then it still beats Mauna Kea by a ridiculous amount. Mauna Kea only wins if one cheats and uses different rules for measuring the two mountains. And Chimborazo isn't the "Highest" it's the Furthest (from the core). Contrary to the end of the video, highest above sea level is the only measure that really matters at all.
You could also have mentioned the different conventions on defining a hill or a mountain as measured either from sea level or the mean level of the surrounding land, giving yet more definitions of "highest" vs. "tallest" which is always fun...
Since the atmosphere and sea level also bulges at the equator, I'd say for all effect and purposes, Everest still is the tallest. Its top has the lowest air density, it is furthest up in the atmosphere.
@@oelewappert I was thinking we should determine which is the "highest" mountain, because there seemed to be a lack of consensus on where ground becomes mountain, and this seems to be making it difficult to determine where the actual bottom of a mountain is found. Altitude, however, seems to be a clearly defined concept.

Born and raised within a 2 hr. drive from the Chimborazo. It is a sight to behold; impossible to describe in words or with a photo. You have to be there to feel its power.
I always had these "methods" of measruing in mind. But at the same time it was always about that "highest peak above sea level" that our teachers told us. It is the most common way to measure elevations and hights I guess, since it is the easiest one.

It's important to measure from sea level cos that's where we mark the boundary between earth and atmosphere. As we go up from sea level, we biologically feel the thinning of the atmosphere more and more. You would feel the farthest from your comfortable air pressure and O2 level on top of Mt. Everest. The peak of Mt. Everest is where you can get closest to outer space without stepping off of earth. It does not work in Hawaii cos the atmosphere doesn't know how much of the mountain is under the sea. It doesn't work in Ecuador cos the atmosphere bulges along with the earth.

Fantastic video- and crazy that there is even more controversy around Mt. Everest and who actually reached the top first. An attempt was made in 1924 by two men and one body was only found, the other missing and so is the camera they brought with them as well as a picture of the wife of the man whose body was found - he was going to leave it at the peak 🤯😵💫
I've heard that Mount McKinley in Alaska is the one that requires the greatest vertical distance climbed in order to summit. If that's the case, I would like for this video to have included that.
Mauna Kea only counts, if you consider the entire island to be part of it. Chimbarazo is neither the tallest, nor highest; its base is simply the farthest from the center of the earth. Everest is only the highest, not the tallest because its base is also far above sea level. Finding the base of a mountain can be kind of difficult, and arbitrary, and thet's why we use sea level, but you certainly won't be climbing anywhere near 29,000 feet, if you start anywhere near Mt. Everest. In my understanding the tallest mountain is actually Mt. McKinley, in Alaska because it has the longest climb, from trailhead to peak.
The highest mountain I have hiked is only 1883 meters.. it has always felt like a huge accomplishment … but not so much when I see this. But then I’m a larger woman in quite bad shape😂😂😂
Interesting fact about Chimborazo. In the 1970's an Ecuadorian airliner with some 70 passengers disappeared without a trace (4 engined Vickers Viscount). Around 2002 or so, wreckage and bodies were discovered in a receding glacier on Chimborazo! I climbed this mountain in 2000. To think i was climbing right near 70 some missing bodies is kind of eerie!
oh yeah, one of the deadliest air crashes in history was in a location where the bodies were never fully recovered: Antarctica. Standard search and rescue was impossible. If it had been a warmer climate there might have been survivors, unlikely given the nature of the crash, but everyone living or dead froze solid within minutes of the crash. how did it crash in Antarctica? Enh... the idea was tours by air. Let people see the majesty of antarctica from the safety of a jumbo jet. which went horribly wrong....

I climbed the Chimborazo and came down so fast I got altitud sickness so bad i though i was going to die...it was a touristy thing so we got to the top minus 200m, nevertheless remains the most beautiful view I've seen so far. The peak is not sorrounded by other mountains, it stands imposing in almost flat land, so it looks gigantic like nothing else I've seen...the semidesert around is gorgeous and there were wild horses
This reminded me about the title of most poisonous snake, like, by which standards? Human deaths per year? Toxicity of the venom? Survival chance? Who knows.
Then you have to measure from the bottom of the tectonic plate. Just because one has water around and it's convenient for you to measure does not mean the other one is not going down. And is equator higher than poles? That's actually a question that does not make sense just like taking equatorial bulge in to consideration for measuring mountains.
What is to be noted that first Mt Everest was first measured from a hill station near Dehradun (approx 165 kms away from mt everest)! around 1000 lbs was used of surveying material was used! it was measured as 9,000 mts, then an Indian surveyor actually measured the mountain to be around 8840 mts.
If you're going to measure from there, then you have to measure Mt everest from the bottom of the tectonic plate that makes up the entirety of the mountain. It's silly to suggest that something is "bigger" when you measure from a completely different point.
Great video on how to critically think through a problem. I would only add that since the bulge extends to the atmosphere as well, the atmosphere would be thinner at the top of Mount Everest compared to Chimborazo making the climb more dangerous. It all depends on the reference of measurement, in this case the core vs crust level. Hail to the nerds.

I like this center of the earth to tip measurement better than any other option you listed here. Now, I'm too lazy to look up my specific location in relation to the center of the earth so I'm going to use 3,958.8 miles. Converting that to inches you get 250,829,568, now if I lay on my back on the floor and measure from floor to tip I get a pretty impressive number!

Denali is actually the most impressive elevation gain over a short distance, often referred to as "geographic relief." It rises 18,000 feet in about 10 miles from its northern base. That's about a 30° pitch on average. Mauna Kea rises farther above the sea floor (some 33,000 ft) but takes a far more gradual approach over about 60 miles distance to do it giving an average pitch of just 10°. That's a very gradual, rounded dome. The Rakhiot face of Nanga Parbat rises 23,000 ft from the Indus River Valley over about 17 miles of horizontal distance which is a mile greater than Denali's prominence but still a gentler slope.
The point of "highest mountain" is from sea level that's pretty much undisputed. That's because it's the main metric of where dry land can conventionally begin and thus the atmosphere can become thinner
The relative ratio to the core arguably doesn't matter, add on top the fact that the atmosphere stretches along the equator as well, so you'd need longer to reach space proper as compared if you jetted off from the poles.
The problem with this line of measurement is that it inputs other factors asides from the mountains themselves. If we talk about mountain to mountain, Everest is shorter than the Hawaiian one. The core is even more relevant, because that determines which is the higher bump on the planet itself. Mountains are geologic phenomena, and using an external factor such as atmosphere is a copout. You are physically closer to the cosmos on top of Mt Chimborazo than Everest, and if 2 people were standing on them at the same time, the one on Mt. Chimborazo would me much higher.
So objectively, Everest is certainly not the roof of the world.

You're correct. If Mauna Kea can use the part of its mountain that's under water, then Everest should be able to use the part of the mountain that's beneath it in the continent. Everest is the tallest peak
The distinction is, if you dropped a ball at the peak and let it roll how far would it go? From Everest it would stop on land somewhere but in the case of Manua Kea it would just keep rolling down to the ocean floor. Guam actually has a vote in this since Mount Lam Lam could 'technically' roll right down to Challenger Deep.

@@postone2821 In way of determining it, Everest is definitely the tallest due to what Mauna Kea is. It's a giant shield volcano. The bottom of the volcano is where the magma first started emerging from emerging from the bottom of the ocean in the area and started depositing lava to build up to form the island and its current cone. That by definition cannot be nearly as deep as the tectonic plate root that forms Everest.
I've climbed Mt. Lamlam in Guam (US). Although it's peak is only 1,332 ft above sea level, Mt. Lamlam's base originates at the bottom of Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, making it the tallest mountain in the world, at 11,530m tall. I thought for sure this video would have mentioned Mt. Lamlam, but it didn't.
I also thought Denali would be in the video. You climb 6,000ft more when climbing Denali, technically making it a taller mountain that is shorter in relation to sea level.
That was the first thing I thought having lived there almost 20 years.

well if you count whats under water, how do you know when to stop? where is the natureal place of "hey, this is the bottom of the mountain?", like the sea is when measuring peaks. plus, even if there was such a line, couldn't you technically count the depth of the waters around afro-eurasia into mount everest's height then aswell, meaning it is still taller than that hawaiian mountain

You missed McKinley. Mount McKinley, the mountain itself base to peak, not adding the range it sits atop, is the tallest mountain in the world that's fully above water. Every other mountain either cheats by using its range as a step-stool, or is underwater.
I was looking for this exact comment. By what most people think of as a mountain (big hill sticking out of the surrounding ground) I would most definitely say Mt McKinley is the tallest mountain.

Mount McKinley was renamed Denali in 2015. A more fitting name for a brutal mountain.

Yeah thought of this too, but I also read that the Rupal face of Nanga Parbat is disgustingly large, where on this certain side the base camp sits at quite a low elevation. I read the wall is 4500m, not sure how that compares to Denali, but that's more gain than Everest.

Everest extends further into the atmosphere. So I would call Everest the "Highest in the World" and Chimbaradzo the "furthest from the Centre of the Earth".
@5:20 if we are to measure Mauna Kea from the bottom of the ocean, the perhaps Everest should be measured from the bottom of the land mass that it sits on, which probably has it's valley at the bottom of the Indian Ocean. As for Mount Chimborazo, try setting your altimeter at 6268 metres, then fly from Chimborazo to Everest, if you can safely make it over Everest, we will all know that Everest is not the tallest mountain peak, if you don't make it over Everest then, your family will (probably) get a lot of flowers sent to them.

No mention of Denali? Denali is taller than Everest if you measure them from base to peak, if they both sat at sea level.
Everest's base camp is already at an elevation which requires acclimation.
If you also measure Everest's height from the bottom of the ocean then it still beats Mauna Kea by a ridiculous amount. Mauna Kea only wins if one cheats and uses different rules for measuring the two mountains. And Chimborazo isn't the "Highest" it's the Furthest (from the core). Contrary to the end of the video, highest above sea level is the only measure that really matters at all.
You could also have mentioned the different conventions on defining a hill or a mountain as measured either from sea level or the mean level of the surrounding land, giving yet more definitions of "highest" vs. "tallest" which is always fun...

Since the atmosphere and sea level also bulges at the equator, I'd say for all effect and purposes, Everest still is the tallest. Its top has the lowest air density, it is furthest up in the atmosphere.

Altitude, however, seems to be a clearly defined concept.

I always had these "methods" of measruing in mind. But at the same time it was always about that "highest peak above sea level" that our teachers told us.

It's important to measure from sea level cos that's where we mark the boundary between earth and atmosphere. As we go up from sea level, we biologically feel the thinning of the atmosphere more and more. You would feel the farthest from your comfortable air pressure and O2 level on top of Mt. Everest. The peak of Mt. Everest is where you can get closest to outer space without stepping off of earth. It does not work in Hawaii cos the atmosphere doesn't know how much of the mountain is under the sea. It doesn't work in Ecuador cos the atmosphere bulges along with the earth.

It doesn’t matter if the mountain is really tall when in comparison to the deep valley it inhabits…. It’s how close to the ends of the Earth’s atmosphere does the mountain reach.

Fantastic video- and crazy that there is even more controversy around Mt. Everest and who actually reached the top first. An attempt was made in 1924 by two men and one body was only found, the other missing and so is the camera they brought with them as well as a picture of the wife of the man whose body was found - he was going to leave it at the peak 🤯😵💫

I've heard that Mount McKinley in Alaska is the one that requires the greatest vertical distance climbed in order to summit. If that's the case, I would like for this video to have included that.
Mauna Kea only counts, if you consider the entire island to be part of it. Chimbarazo is neither the tallest, nor highest; its base is simply the farthest from the center of the earth. Everest is only the highest, not the tallest because its base is also far above sea level. Finding the base of a mountain can be kind of difficult, and arbitrary, and thet's why we use sea level, but you certainly won't be climbing anywhere near 29,000 feet, if you start anywhere near Mt. Everest. In my understanding the tallest mountain is actually Mt. McKinley, in Alaska because it has the longest climb, from trailhead to peak.

Interesting fact about Chimborazo. In the 1970's an Ecuadorian airliner with some 70 passengers disappeared without a trace (4 engined Vickers Viscount). Around 2002 or so, wreckage and bodies were discovered in a receding glacier on Chimborazo! I climbed this mountain in 2000. To think i was climbing right near 70 some missing bodies is kind of eerie!
oh yeah, one of the deadliest air crashes in history was in a location where the bodies were never fully recovered: Antarctica. Standard search and rescue was impossible. If it had been a warmer climate there might have been survivors, unlikely given the nature of the crash, but everyone living or dead froze solid within minutes of the crash.
how did it crash in Antarctica? Enh... the idea was tours by air. Let people see the majesty of antarctica from the safety of a jumbo jet. which went horribly wrong....

Well in my experience the best mountains are between 1000 and 3000 meters tall, for normal humans anyway. Above 3000 m, it gets rather difficult to breathe properly.

I climbed the Chimborazo and came down so fast I got altitud sickness so bad i though i was going to die...it was a touristy thing so we got to the top minus 200m, nevertheless remains the most beautiful view I've seen so far. The peak is not sorrounded by other mountains, it stands imposing in almost flat land, so it looks gigantic like nothing else I've seen...the semidesert around is gorgeous and there were wild horses

This reminded me about the title of most poisonous snake, like, by which standards? Human deaths per year? Toxicity of the venom? Survival chance? Who knows.
Then you have to measure from the bottom of the tectonic plate. Just because one has water around and it's convenient for you to measure does not mean the other one is not going down.
And is equator higher than poles? That's actually a question that does not make sense just like taking equatorial bulge in to consideration for measuring mountains.

What is to be noted that first Mt Everest was first measured from a hill station near Dehradun (approx 165 kms away from mt everest)! around 1000 lbs was used of surveying material was used! it was measured as 9,000 mts, then an Indian surveyor actually measured the mountain to be around 8840 mts.

If you're going to measure from there, then you have to measure Mt everest from the bottom of the tectonic plate that makes up the entirety of the mountain. It's silly to suggest that something is "bigger" when you measure from a completely different point.

I would only add that since the bulge extends to the atmosphere as well, the atmosphere would be thinner at the top of Mount Everest compared to Chimborazo making the climb more dangerous. It all depends on the reference of measurement, in this case the core vs crust level. Hail to the nerds.

I like this center of the earth to tip measurement better than any other option you listed here. Now, I'm too lazy to look up my specific location in relation to the center of the earth so I'm going to use 3,958.8 miles. Converting that to inches you get 250,829,568, now if I lay on my back on the floor and measure from floor to tip I get a pretty impressive number!
