If you are often in Hokkaido, you may check out the railway crossing of Toya (Muroran Line) right to the west of the station, it is located directly in front of a red torii from Abuta shrine.

They are diverse for a reason - other than Shinkansen (which is standard-gauge for a reason), the other lines are diverse to the point of being *branded* like automobile brands - it would be like Toyota/Honda/Nissan applied to rail lines.
