- Gukesh, the hometown hero, returned to Chennai after winning the Candidates 2024 in Toronto, Canada. It was 3 am, and over 300 people gathered at the airport. One hundred children from Velammal School, where Gukesh studied, arrived with flowers, crowns, and numerous gifts for him. Check out this video.

And now all of em are there with their journalist and microphones just to hear 2 words from him to put on their channel for the whole day and take credit.
Anand didn't even receive one-tenth of the media coverage when he became the world champion for the 5th time in 2012. And a decade later, we can see how much Chess has evolved in India.

@Curio78 The kids are from Velammal school , Mogapair, Chennai which is termed by press as a Chess factory . There are 84 Grandmasters in India (all but 3 of them reached GM after year 2000) of which 29 from Tamil Nadu. Of the 29, 14 had done schooling and started chess at this Velammal school. Gukesh, Praggnanandha and his sister Vaishali are among those !

Very well said..but i think the organisers (or FIDE) might want to cash in the recognition/popularity chess is getting in India and
It'll be held in a neutral third country, not in the origin country of either players.
But you know he won the Chennai Grandmasters and when asked he said playing in his hometown helped a lot. Maybe that can help him to become world champ too
@@mrmistyrose007 That's not correct. , It's mostly held in countries where they get good sponsorship. Magnus won against Vishi in Chennai. Going by the craze we will definitely get great sponsorship from Indian companies but then we may loose the championship. Hopefully we won't

Showing love and appreciation is something but pounding on someone who hs jz arrived with those heavy garlands for flexing is something. Nthng wrong in receiving him at airport with cheer (by his schl students ws sweet) but rest of the things were jz for media attention. If they really wanted to felicitate him vd garland n other things, maybe fix a date n arrange a function later, also interviews cn b done later too in cmng days. Whether u believe it or not, he clearly seemed uncomfortable. Let d boy meet his family n rest for d night. Wts d point of running till the car, falling over him vd mic n camera, also those huge garlands/kireetam (all those cud hv waited till nxt day right)

This is one of the greatest and proudest moments for India in its entire history. It is beyond astonishing that a 17 year old has achieved this level of accomplishment.
There is something called personal space … poor gukesh.. his dad was pushed aside and people literally fell on him.. sad state of affairs… looking at this he will be scared to come to Chennai if he wins World championship 😅
my fellow countrymen will always find reasons to complain(including me), if there were no people out there welcoming Gukesh they would complain saying sports other than cricket are not recognized and now when people are trying to celebrate Gukesh victory make him feel special,some are yet trying to find negativity in it, it might be true people are having thier personal motive in celebrating his victory but i really dont feel it should bother anyone as far as Chess is getting recognized ..so chill guys!!

It is great. But gukesh should not feel that pressure because of the expectations of people. He should just focus on the game.he can easily defeat ding liren. Every celebrity faces these things. Fans put so much pressure on them. Mainly the expectations of fans put so much pressure on players. When Sachin Tendulkar goed out he will be surrounded by fans. We can understand what he faces. It is something they cannot avoid people like Sachin or gukesh are very kind and will never show their anger in front of the fans.

Totally callous government..such a gem is coming...and there was no proper 30 minutes gathering..and see these IPL stars ..they all have proper protection right from where they leave..to where they arrive. There was literally no safety for Gukesh .and those sweet little school kids have not had good time with his school fellow..I am sure Gukesh will visit his school sooner..
