  • For those who want a basic introduction to the Pacific Island culture of Samoa, this programme is for you! I produced this video some years ago for the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawai'i. Our fearless cultural instructor is Chief Sielu Avea, long noted for his prowess with a flaming nifo oti in fireknife dancing. Now you can enjoy some aspects of Samoan culture and even learn to cook Polynesian style!

      actually i just watched a documentary yesterday about how they have grocery stores and diabetes is SOARING in samoa since 2005 because they no longer cook in the traditional ways... their bodies didnt have time to adapt to the modern high sugar processed food

    • @kanyewest184

      @@MrLTiger it's true that many samoan people face those issues of obesity and diabetes due to the facts that you stated, but many rural villages still practice the traditional samoan lifestyle. It's a shame that many 3rd world countries are quickly shifting to the western way of life

    • @musicgal9830

      @@kanyewest184 true my father’s from the outer villages and they still practice the traditional way of cooking food, which keeps them very fit and healthy. Even after 20 years he still cant adjust to processed food, but sadly the main towns have been westernised with this types of food.

    • @aloha_oe311
      @aloha_oe311 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      MrLTiger yes and those are the people who live near the town area. But all the rural villages of Samoa still live like this, that’s why you’ll find most of the fittest healthy Samoan are not from around their town area but from the rural part of Samoa. Because they don’t have access on processed foods, they are depended on what they grow and fishing.

He takes charge of the room, but also not afraid to have fun and look silly himself. He's basically doing a comedy show and teaching people survival skills at the same time, with jokes that are timeless and funny to people from very different cultures like America and Japan. Firstly, you should learn to write with correct grammer in English, and secondly, attend FestPac events and learn more of the islands and their histories as well as their contributions and participation in a myriad of areas whilst promoting and sustaining their individual cultural practices and beliefs in their children. Saying you are from Guam and using the name Kim jong un is unacceptable. Kim jong un is the name of the North Korean leader who threatened to annihilate Guam last year. Do not represent Guam.

    I love this video and it ties in very nicely with some research I have been doing on the beautiful Hawaiian and Polynesian islands including Samoa, Fiji,etc...(Mostly Tiki's, Petroglyphs, ancient writings) All respect too these Island People's for the culture, food, and healthy living. Chief Sielu is one of the nicest people I've ever seen and he is a valuable asset to his People.

    omg, it's Nov 21st of 2016 n I just discovered this video.
    I know it's too late to write out now, maybe admin is not even active any longer but have to say this...lots of Respect for the chief. Man u are a true keeper of the tribe. I absolutely love the traditions and damn, the way u brought it out to the crowd really blew ma mind away. Enjoyed every bit of the show. keep rocking chief and keep up the flame :)
    Hope someday if m lucky enough, would dearly and definitely come to Samoan island (will make sure not only to the airport :p) and get a chance to experience and share a bit of its rich tradition.
    Blessings from ARUNACHAL PRADESH (NORTH EASTERN part of INDIA)

    Someone seriously needs to do a documentary about him. He WAS PCC. I remember every time I went to PCC, his parts of the show/polynesian village were always the best and most entertaining. I hope he is well. Anyone know if he's still at PCC? I live on the same island but haven't been to visit. I saw the video of the new revamped floor show "Breath Of Life". I personally thought it was boring compared to the old show, but I get that they're trying something new. The fire knife show and the comedy with the 3 guys trying to put out fire with their huge grass skirts were the most memorable out of the old floor show. Boat rides and Samoan village too. This guy was an absolute entertainer. Very, very good at capturing the audience's attention.

    it's really interesting when you get a glimpse into their culture through a screen. especially when they played with fire. it really communicates to you that they are who and all they are. it's almost as if you are there and you can feel the heat of the flames. live long chief sielu avea
