Wii U handled backwards compatibility by essentially having a built-in Wii, which is essentially why Wii mode was separate. This has been the case for basically all of Nintendo's systems - in fact, the 3DS still has some bits of the GBA inside due to being built to have DS backwards compatibility, which they only ever leveraged as part of the Ambassador program. The Switch successor leaks haven't uncovered a similar setup, though, so it seems very likely it'll be the first Nintendo system to run its predecessor's games directly on the new hardware (especially with Nvidia supplying a new and improved successor to their Switch chip)
That's situational. If you still have a good CRT or early HD TV and Wii then that's the best way. But if you have a relatively recent HDTV, Wii games on a Wii are unbearable with the aliasing and fuzziness. Wii U fixes this issue so while its not the best way, its still an acceptable compromise.
the only Wii games that were better off being played on the original Wii instead were the ones that supported Gamecube controllers, like Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. You could make the argument about using the Wii classic controller instead but there are some games out there too that support ONLY the Gamecube controller but not the classic controller like sonic riders zero gravity. Aside from that, you are better off playing these games on a WiiU, I personally don't due to me having save data corruption issues with my WiiU due to external issues, and me already owning a Wii anyway
Tears of the Kingdom and Xenoblade 3 are the two games I will instandly replay on Switch 2, the other first party games looked and ran well enough. I hope they give Tears of the Kingdom a proper remaster with updated visuals though, the game was already a miracle on the Switch, but it has massive potential to set the world on fire again when they re-release it with current-gen visuals.
Imagine the first xenoblade with no loading screens (they would have to make the terrain that normally gets skipped while transitioning from area to area, but that would be a dream).
Xenoblade 2 is the one with bigger performance issues. The other games seem to stutter a lot less because they either keep their 30 or are a lot smoother and consistent in their dips when they do happen depending on the situration.
Oh, that game is so fun though. I'm looking forward to playing it without the resolution dropping to dog water clarity, even through my MClassic boosting the visuals
Xenoblade 2 does have a dynamic resolution, both in docked and handheld. So a new console would help it at least hit a stable 720p 30fps, but man I would kill for a 4K 60fps update for that game.
XC2 goes down to 360p on handheld. it is so bad that they just remove the lighting in that mode. So, it does making the gatcha pull shadows much easier to see.
It is entirely possible to disable dynamic resolution(people made cheat codes for it), but idk if Nintendo would actually implement such an option. They also didn't disable the LoD model in Mario 64 despite it actually costing performance to have it around.(Yes, it is hilarious)
To be fair we don't know if the Switch 2 will run the Switch 1 games enhanced without a patch. The New 3DS didn't run any Old 3DS game released before the New 3DS better. It even undercooked itself to match the normal 3DS iirc.
This is a bit of a Apples to Oranges comparison I feel though. Technically the DS and the 3DS ran in ways that demanded specific instructions etc. from the chip. The 3DS basically had an evolved DS chip so the 3DS could "devolve" itself to a DS to achieve perfect backwards compatibility. Modern hardware behaves differently, games aren't tied too hard to super specific chip designs anymore so the Switch 2 should have no need to become a Switch 1 to run Switch 1 games so Jon is right, games that run unlocked in some way should notice the additional headroom unless Nintendo artificially caps it.

Age of Calamity was the first game that came to my mind. It's especially jarring when you compare it to Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition, which, in single player on the big screen, runs extremely smoothly pretty much all the time. Minor note: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 also has a dynamic resolution, so, while I would love to see a patch to have it run at 1080p natively on the TV, the Switch 2 would still boost it to a consistent 720p at least, which it certainly doesn't always hit right now.
Fire Emblem Three Hopes also comes to mind. While a lot better optimized than Age of Calamity, it suffers from a similar overall issue. It targets 60 FPS but can barely hold 30 at most times and only randomly deciding to run at near full FPS when it just sorta feels like it. The result is a game that sometimes feels wildly diffrent(for the better, having full FPS is a lot smoother and responsive it feels like) every once in a while with nothing the player can do to influence it.
According to the Pokemon giga leak, there is meant to be one more update for SV. Providing that the Switch 2 is revealed before Pokemon Day at the end of February, I could see them showing off the gameplay on the Switch 2 with this update showing how smoother the game is
Hopefully with improved lighting and draw distance as well. An earlier build of the game had a better lighting engine but since y’know, they ain’t really that optimized in the first place, they cut even more corners down.

Very helpful. I’m going to put many of these on the back burner and hope for better performance on Switch 2. Got plenty of other Switch and PS4/5 games to play in the meantime.
hopefully switch 2 will do something about the monastery load screens in Fire Emblem Three Houses. Fast travelling and getting stuck on a door that won't open for good few seconds because the area behind it needs to be loaded is always really jarring and makes an already lengthy part of the game take even longer.
I want remasters and patches yes, but I also want the Virtual Console back, I want more PS4/5 and Xbox One/Series ports, and I would like to see more plans to port and remaster more GameCube, Wii, Wii U, DS and 3DS releases.
As long as the Switch 2 is still handheld, which is unconfirmed so far as I've heard, the backwards compatibility is probably the most exciting aspect of what we know, more so than new games since my backlog is already insurmountable.
People keep saying Pokémon runs like crap due to the switch’s power but that isn’t true at all People have emulated the game on PC and the issues are still present. The bad performance is just part of the actual games code, people had to hack the game to increase performance.
I will never understand the people who defend Scarlet and Violet. No matter how good or bad the story might be the state that game was released in is beyond unacceptable. I would quite literally rather have every member of the Pokémon company break down my door and slap me in the face than play that absolute mess, because at least I wouldn’t have to sacrifice hard earned money to get slapped in the face.
@@manuelalbertoromero9528 what he means is that the Pokémon company sees that they still make record profits even if the game is released in a terrible unfinished state. They no longer need to put effort into the game because profit is a guarantee. It’s a devastatingly true thing. If it were any other franchise than Pokémon, Scarlet and Violet would be so lambasted and would be a massive financial failure, but since it’s the Pokémon company, you have people defending it and saying oh but it’s fine or oh, but it has a good story.
Absolutely, that game is unoptimized and glitchy beyond belief. And even if it does SOMEHOW (won’t happen) run well, the game still looks like shit (low quality textures) including visual glitches like shadows changing with the camera angle, that won’t get fixed with a change of hardware
Hey Jon! Great video. Lastly I've been obsessed with my Wii (while waiting for switch 2), and I was wandering if you will have any Wii videos to make the wait for switch 2 more enjoyable, do you?
I think we actually can expect improved image quality even in Xenoblade 2, because most of the blurriness is due to dynamic resolution, not low texture quality. Since it's dynamically reducing the resolution in response to limited resources, on a more powerful system it should automatically look much better.
I thought the blurriness was due to the type of Anti Aliasing they use, lmao. That won't magically go away, if anything it is more noticable on higher resolution to the point people made a mod to remove it for Xenoblade DE.(There were also mods or cheats for the other games, but Iirc, they either didn't work correctly or were not correctly updated for newer game versions. It has been months since I checked tho)
@@lpfan4491 There are probably multiple factors. It definitely does use dynamic resolution though, and it's probably the worst example of it (goes down to what…320p at times?). I think it'll benefit much more than, say, Wolfenstein II, which will almost certainly still look like someone smeared the screen with vaseline (because the texture quality is quite bad).
Gotta say, glad this channel is called Good Vibes Gaming. I definitely am in need of the good vibes, more so than ever and you guys always deliver. As for the topic of the video, Bayonetta 3 is a game that I first think of for games that would greatly benefit from a Switch successor boost.
I hope Nintendo adds an optional boost mode on the Switch 2 that could unlock higher frame rates, raise the resolution or maybe use fancy DLSS upscaling. Old Switch 1 titles would look and feel brand new and that's exciting!
Upcoming big titles like Metroid Prime 4 and Xenoblade Chronicles X will probably be promoted for the Switch successor once it's out/officially revealed, I'm sure those two games will benefit a lot, they're pushing the Switch to its limits already.
Albeit being a port, Another one that I’m looking forward to playing on switch 2 is Dying Light. That game later got patched on switch to run at a locked 30fps, but the unpatched physical version of that game ran at an unlocked framerate. Meaning in theory that game could run at 60fps. And I’m ‘dying’ to see it run like that on a handheld
I don’t think a having more powerful hardware will fix code optimization issues. Animal Crossing NH will never be as good as that edit- because on PC’s with even more power (granted it is being emulated) the load screens still remain.
I own both Link's Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom but haven't really played either yet - and I don't think I'm going to until the Switch 2 at this point.
There are so so so many Switch games that needs an upgrade to either be locked 30 or 60 fps. Everything from Platinum like Astral Chain, Wonderful101, Bayo 3 to all of the Nintendo Musou games, to Pokemon, Xenoblade series, all of the impossible ports like Doom, Wolfenstien, Witcher 3, Hogwarts Legacy. Then we got the first party games made by third party studio like Echoes, Brothership, and Endless ocean Luminous. there are also way too many Square Enix games that chugs on the Switch to list that needs upgrading. I would say that maybe 80% of the entire Switch library needs some sort of a visual and performance upgrade.
I'm really excited for Scarlet and Violet on Switch 2, everything about the game is incredible except the performance. It has the potential to rival gens 4 and 5 if people are able to see past the lag
I'm going to make a bet - the Tegra X1 is on board the Switch 2 and will be sandboxed from the rest of the environment just like the Gameboy mode in GBA, GBA mode in DS, Gamecube mode in Wii and Wii Mode in Wii U. The games will perform the same because it will be using the X1 and the X1 will be removed from a future revision just like Wii Rev 2, DSi and GBMicro.
@@VagrantValmar I'm huffing copium that it'll be good but we have no proof it's in the final device either. I just have very little faith in Nintendo with backcompat.
Pie in the sky wish: every first party game gets one last major update. On top of a next gen upgrade, content that either the developers always wanted or the fans have been begging for since launch get added to make these games "content complete" for a new generation to pick up, possibly at a discount.
My prediction is that Nintendo will use BotW and/or TotK to advertise the new system, despite them being Switch games They will show off how much better the game looks and how fast the games load, but they won't bring up the performance, but will be obvious to us
Really just hope the physical cartridges work on switch 2. I know people are saying yes and no but once I have confirmation it could be a great upgrade. My switch still works fine so don’t have a reason to upgrade right now 😂
If they update Xenoblade 2 (and the others, of course) it might be the best day of my life. I just NEED to see the Kingdoms of Uraya and Tantal crystal clear
I have not played the Bayonetta series yet and I really wanted to, just never got around it yet... If they can manage to make the framerate better by just shoving them on the Switch 2, that would be so cool to play them for the first time!! I hope it's true.
hopefully its the same as the 3ds. The slot would basically the same the new carts would just be designed to not fit in a switch 1. I can't really imagine nintendo abandoning physical media just yet
@catmachete2900 they confirmed they aren't abandoning physical media a couple months ago. They did make a statement on that. However with the Switch 2 needing cards that support bigger file sizes for these games I'm assuming it'll be new media. But maybe it'll be like the 3ds and still work.
When Nintendo says "software" they mean "games". Nintendo would not release the statement they did if they were going to qualify it later with "digital software-only". Physical cartridges are thus confirmed backwards compatible for Switch 2. Given that the Switch 2 is likely to use the same Switch cartridges, just the higher capacity version, it likely shares the same slot
@Greekanese31 are you sure tho? Software could just mean it's compatible to run Switch software...not necessary physical if they don't have the slot for it. Could just be digital emulation
Of course they mean physical, the Switch 2 isn't going to be digital-only, it'll have physical cartridges much like the current Switch, in fact the cartridges will probably look exactly the same.
I hope Nickelodeon All-star Brawl 2 gets a switch 2 performance patch because man it runs so weirdly I know that's 3rd party for a practically dead game, literal death because everyone got fired, not because whatever Smash Fanboys think it means, but I really like that game and I think it needs to be able to be enjoyed to its full potential by its biggest playerbase, Switch users
In general all games not reaching their target resolution; or games with dynamic res should in theory improve instantly. Also I/O and loading related operations should instantly improve (I'm not only talking about general loading times, but also resource and asset streaming which are apparently the culprits of the slowdowns in Link awakening remastered & Echoes of Wisdom).
My only thing with the switch 2 is I hope we either get a bunch of storage off the bat or can still use sd cards. It was so simple to add storage to the switch and I know adding an ssd to console isn’t the hardest thing but I prefer how easy and cheap a micro sd card is
I just hope the Hyperdimension Neptunia games would run better on the Switch successor, they run like ass on the Switch despite running great on the Vita.
I am still under the impression that GF was developing Scarlet and Violet for Switch 2 primarily and intended to release it on both consoles at the same time. Especially since it is proven to run WAY better just by bypassing the original Switch's down clock used to preserve battery life.
When Age of Calamity first came out, it captivated me so much, that i 100%ed it in essentially one go. But even though this game for me is one of the best titles the switch has to offer, i held off on buying the DLC until the switch received better hardware. i am excited.
If Nintendo wants to make me come back to playing switch games, 1) make sure switch 2 has achievements and 2) give retroactive achievements to switch 1 games
Surely Xenoblade 2 will improve a fair bit on Switch 2. The game sits at like 500p or less with dynamic resolution, so if that can be bumped to 1080 most of the time, it’ll make a huge difference. It won’t fix all the anti aliasing problems, but should still look much better
I’m hoping that Bayonetta 3 will be able to run at a consistent framerate, since the fact that it was 60 fps and yet stuttered constantly made it a bit of a slog to play compared to its predecessors. And there’s also Xenoblade 2, which is a sharpened mess in handheld mode, and so I’m also hoping an upgrade would be able to rectify that.
I do have some doubts for Scarlet and Violet as I don't think it's problems were less to do with processing power and more to do with being assembled with hot glue and promises.
A thought that came to mind during the video's intro is that a lot of speedruns will (hopefully) be way faster in real time when the new system releases. I remember hearing FE3H runs really struggle to get below an hour just because of the load screens, for example. I can't imagine what the time saves will be for longer runs.
There is no guarantee even with backwards compatibility for Switch 2, that the games will suddenly get noticeable boosts to performance natively... this is Nintendo we're talking about. They are gonna charge you for upgrades/patches.
Remember the GVG video about how the Wii U was a downgrade for playing Wii games? I hope Jon doesn't have to roll in the grass again...
Wii U handled backwards compatibility by essentially having a built-in Wii, which is essentially why Wii mode was separate. great video Jon! Really appreciated your preamble about what exactly you were seeking out
Thank you for keeping your word jon
I want remasters and patches yes, but I also want the Virtual Console back, I want more PS4/5 and Xbox One/Series ports, and I would like to see more plans to port and remaster more GameCube, Wii, Wii U, DS and 3DS releases.
Pretty excited for the enhancements, nice video ✨
As long as the Switch 2 is still handheld, which is unconfirmed so far as I've heard, the backwards compatibility is probably the most exciting aspect of what we know, more so than new games since my backlog is already insurmountable.
People keep saying Pokémon runs like crap due to the switch’s power but that isn’t true at all
People have emulated the game on PC and the issues are still present. The bad performance is just part of the actual games code, people had to hack the game to increase performance.
I will never understand the people who defend Scarlet and Violet. No matter how good or bad the story might be the state that game was released in is beyond unacceptable. I would quite literally rather have every member of the Pokémon company break down my door and slap me in the face than play that absolute mess, because at least I wouldn’t have to sacrifice hard earned money to get slapped in the face.
pokemon games run bad because people buy them anyway
What logic is that? @@enorma29
As someone who has never owned a switch, this has me hyped af. Both libraries 1080x60fps.
I hope Nintendo adds an optional boost mode on the Switch 2 that could unlock higher frame rates, raise the resolution or maybe use fancy DLSS upscaling. Old Switch 1 titles would look and feel brand new and that's exciting!
I'm keeping my expectations very low for backwards compatibility upgrades. Any sort of boost at all would be a pleasant surprise.
Guilty Gear Strive could use a Switch 2 specific patch so cross-play can be supported.
Hey we have the same joy cons! Love the Splatoon 2 color scheme.
Nah, the Nvidia translation layer was leaked. It won't be a sandboxed X1
Also keep in mind the new console is a switch so why would they do that
@@ibilesfighter3.16 it's just a switch in name and concept. The chip/SOC running the actual system and games is completely different.
@@VagrantValmar I'm huffing copium that it'll be good but we have no proof it's in the final device either. I just have very little faith in Nintendo with backcompat.
@@VagrantValmar is this the same info from the dataminer 4 months ago? I see nothing tangible from a quick google other than "dataminer finds x"
Liking and commenting because Jon rolled in the grass. The man has chortles
The intro made me think Earthbound got a remake that came out in October
Yeah, john rolling on grass is fine. But if this man were right, this world would be so much better now
Why’d you have a discussion on switch 2 at the end of your grass rolling video.. I’m here for the grass!!!
Pie in the sky wish: every first party game gets one last major update. On top of a next gen upgrade, content that either the developers always wanted or the fans have been begging for since launch get added to make these games "content complete" for a new generation to pick up, possibly at a discount.
I miss Jon's "hot take time", bring it back!
I actually want that XC2 patch…fingers crossed
My prediction is that Nintendo will use BotW and/or TotK to advertise the new system, despite them being Switch games
They will show off how much better the game looks and how fast the games load, but they won't bring up the performance, but will be obvious to us
Quality intro😂
Really just hope the physical cartridges work on switch 2. I know people are saying yes and no but once I have confirmation it could be a great upgrade. My switch still works fine so don’t have a reason to upgrade right now 😂
If they update Xenoblade 2 (and the others, of course) it might be the best day of my life. I just NEED to see the Kingdoms of Uraya and Tantal crystal clear
Yeah, the 3DS had this too with DS games, but not to the same scale. The load times were actually faster on a 3DS then on an original DS.
I have not played the Bayonetta series yet and I really wanted to, just never got around it yet... If they can manage to make the framerate better by just shoving them on the Switch 2, that would be so cool to play them for the first time!! I hope it's true.
I have one game in my Switch library. Fox McCloud dating sim. Glad it's backwards compatible. Peace 💜
Great video
I feel like Advance Wars Reboot Camp would benefit too. It always had a weirdly wonky framerate for some reason.
So my paranoid mind is telling me that while yes they said backwards compatible they didn't confirm that it would include physical backcompat.
hopefully its the same as the 3ds.
I'll believe that anything on Switch 2 runs in 4K when I finally see it.
I hope Nickelodeon All-star Brawl 2 gets a switch 2 performance patch because man it runs so weirdly
I know that's 3rd party for a practically dead game, literal death because everyone got fired, not because whatever Smash Fanboys think it means, but I really like that game and I think it needs to be able to be enjoyed to its full potential by its biggest playerbase, Switch users
It was so simple to add storage to the switch and I know adding an ssd to console isn’t the hardest thing but I prefer how easy and cheap a micro sd card is
I'm waiting for the next console to play Age of Calamity, Spyro Trilogy or another similar game that needs an upgrade
Truly a man of his word.
I just hope the Hyperdimension Neptunia games would run better on the Switch successor, they run like ass on the Switch despite running great on the Vita.
Solid opening.
If Nintendo wants to make me come back to playing switch games, 1) make sure switch 2 has achievements and 2) give retroactive achievements to switch 1 games
i think gvg gang should all roll on the grass for their intros as well
Surely Xenoblade 2 will improve a fair bit on Switch 2. The game sits at like 500p or less with dynamic resolution, so if that can be bumped to 1080 most of the time, it’ll make a huge difference. It won’t fix all the anti aliasing problems, but should still look much better
Smash Ultimate also has a lot of input delay compared to the other games in the series, hopefully more powerful hardware would lower the input delay
I remember Mario rabbids sparks of hope had long loading
Times hopefully that gets fixed as well
Yo, asmr from Jon would be fire 👀
Whats sad is that the silver case 2425 still will lag on switch 2 even tho its a ps1 and mobile phone TEXT BASED ADVENTURE GAME
I do have some doubts for Scarlet and Violet as I don't think it's problems were less to do with processing power and more to do with being assembled with hot glue and promises.
never heard anyone talk about the smash ultimate costume thing before lmao, always bugged me too
A thought that came to mind during the video's intro is that a lot of speedruns will (hopefully) be way faster in real time when the new system releases. I remember hearing FE3H runs really struggle to get below an hour just because of the load screens, for example. I can't imagine what the time saves will be for longer runs.
shout out to the first Daemon Ex Machina game
There is no guarantee even with backwards compatibility for Switch 2, that the games will suddenly get noticeable boosts to performance natively... this is Nintendo we're talking about. They are gonna charge you for upgrades/patches.
Peak intro
