  • The Ullswater Way is a relatively new route, designated in 2016 to cover 20 miles around the shores of Ullswater Lake. In this video I walk from Patterdale to Pooley Bridge via the Ullswater Way, catching the Ullswater Steamer back to base.

I just completed the Ullswater Way this Easter weekend just gone, in part because I watched this video and I was massively inspired. My original plan was to walk clockwise from Pooley Bridge to Glenridding on Saturday, catch the steamer from Glenridding, and then on Sunday morning catch the boat to Glenridding and finish the walk via Aira Force. What actually happened was that I only made it to Howtown on the 1 st day (about 6 miles from where I needed to be), as I almost got to Howtown, then decided to go back on myself to see the Cock Pit Stone Circle and I am so glad I did because I got to see and pet wild horses. So ended up getting the steamer from Howtown - did 11 miles that day. And on Sunday, got the steamer first thing to Howtown and picked up where I left off: walked clockwise from Howtown to Glenridding back to Pooley Bridge - so did 16 miles on Sunday. I bought my badge immediately when I got home!

One of my favourite Lakes walks. Great vidoegraphy as ever. Different angles and focal lengths give great variety. Sometimes it would be nice if details were over-dubbed later - was the tree a Maple, who was JMW Turner etc.? No need to justify taking a lighter walk when it's so rewarding! Thanks for covering this one. It's like a prompt.

Recently discovered your channel. Incredible episodes of beautiful trails, sharing local history, fauna and flora and music is relaxing. You are so strong, courageous, brave and great personality. I struggle with severe chronic pain which means I cannot hike or garden right now. As an expat I watch these shows to remind me of when I did long hiking trails. Thank you for all your content and conservation work. Lisa

Great video as always. I love that you take take the time to set up a DSLR and capture the environment to compliment the action cam footage - 06:34 being a great example.

What a beautiful walk. It’s amazing how walking near water always calms me to the core. Even when it’s through your lens. Thanks Abbie.

Ullswater definitely beats Windermere! That was such a lovely walk - I did part of it (Howtown to Glenridding) many years ago but would love to do the rest someday, especially taking in those bronze age sites. It's always so cool to visit ancient sites and just try to picture the life back then, and how the landscape must've looked.

Wow the Sun really came out for you today (or when ever it was this was recorded) Abbie, meanwhile down in Essex we are in for some more Snow..... Keep Walking, but a small warning from someone like you, I too have cover over 1000 miles hiking in my 30 years of hiking and I am now paying the price for those miles. I can now manage less than half a mile. Please Hikers World Wide, look after your bodies. I enjoyed the thousands of miles I hike, but did not think at the age of 65 (nearly 66) I would be struggling to walk the half mile to the Supermarket. Tony in Essex.

I absolutely love Ullswater. I have so many memories from childhood and adult life in Glenridding and Pooley Bridge. I live just north of Newcastle so Pooley Bridge is pretty much the closest Lake to get to for a day trip. Really enjoyed your video.

Beautiful abbie might be heading that way myself I've been in the mountains in the snow had to dive in a few bothys cos the snow was heavy...cold weather exposure has damaged the waterproofing of my tent and last night's downpour over on fairlands mount took its toll an my tent was flooded this morning so have had to go buy a new one I got a rubans tent but it has no groundsheet apparently it's waterproof but I'll just have to throw out a groundsheet for it.. I might head to ulswater and do the walk just cos it looks so stunning from your vid xx

Enjoyed the video immensely, I'm up at what I know as Helton Common where you saw the cockpit several times a week with the dogs
I occasionally pop down to Pooley Bridge but to be honest it's too busy for my taste, Patterdale and Glenridding are similar, but I'll definitely be in Patterdale for the Ullswater Show and in August the Patterdale Dog Day, fantastic local Lakeland show well worth a look if anyone is nearby.
I'm a typical local and so rarely explore the paths on my doorstep but this video has convinced me to jump in the car and have the wife drive down to Patterdale and I'll walk the route, except i may detour away from Pooley Bridge to Helton and then Bampton to sit on my stool in the Mardale inn........that's if the old legs will carry me that far🙂
    Cheers🍺

unfortunately post offices, shops, local pubs etc are all closing down in the lakes, due to a lot of houses that are now second homes and are empty all year, they have no local trade.....sad really

😪 that's the danger. I love going to the lakes but, at the same time, I think there should be more control over the number of second homes that are allowed. In the end, it destroys the community and the very things that make you want to be in the environment in the first place.
