You all are finally getting it. Mark Pope understands it here and he will succeed. One last thing. The more you talk, Kentucky, the more viewers you get. We are Kentucky, the #1 fan base.
I think the difference between Cal bringing in 4-5 five stars and Pope trying to do the same is that Pope is focusing on the highest-skilled players while Cal generally goes for the most physical specimens with NBA lottery pick measurables.
Yup, the guys Pope is after are recruited for skill set rather than NBA potential. Cal rarely recruited for how guys fit together and always about getting the best 5 or 6 players he can and make it work somehow.
Stop NBA potential and skilled goes hand in hand , they both want the absolute best players they can get , they both offered Dynabansta a scholarship, they both offered Boozer twins scholarships , every coach wants the best players who are future NBA players
@@B-Eazy999Not necessarily, potential has a lot to do with NBA stock. Cals way you end up with high ceiling guys that aren't that good in college (Skal, Khalil Whitney, Livingston, etc) and guys that are just better in the pros (Murray, Maxey, Shai). Nice having em, but what they do for you when they were here. Pope is building a team, a team to win. Hes looking for certain skills, mindsets, everyone isnt a take just bc theyre 5* like under Cal and the opposite is also true. You're not off the board bc you're "only" ranked the 45th best player in the class like under Calipari. Duke is still doing it the Calipari way, for example last yr taking 4 guys that play same position bc theyre 5*. HUGE difference. Not to mention everyone's mindset isn't 9 months and I'm out or I'm a failure and going to be recruited over and gotta transfer or declare anymore.
Big difference in a "Cal Class" is how they are coached...under Cal this was one of the concerns, they were not coached. He was regularly beaten on the court by being simply outcoached and not prepping his teams for games. This is not going to be an issue with Pope as he works very hard at actually coaching.
Exactly. Plus he's getting guys who work well together rather then the best class as possible. Plus I think coach Pope will look into the transfer portal a bit more for good solid glue guys
The problem with cal was the usage 100% and also the x and o's was huge. As a cat fan if we played against a good coach no matter how many 5 stars we had you felt like we was going to lose just do to that fact cal couldn't literally coach
That’s the recipe. I hope pope doesn’t act like the money he has to spend to get these guys is coming out of his own pocket, if boosters are willing to pay, let them pay.
Yeah this is probably the normal recipe I will say it will depend on the freshman class though like 25 is loaded if they were to take a big class this is the one to do it in I think there will be years where it’s 2 freshman 6 retains 4 portal and so on 2 will probably be the minimum on the freshman side
We KY fans had a problem with Cal being lazy, not teaching defense, saying SEC tourney games didn't count, keeping our best players on the bench while trying to promote his "star" players. And oh yeah, losing 10 games including 3 in a row at home Close that book and burn it. Pope Will be a better coach because his work ethic is unending and his dedication is To Kentucky
Work ethic doesn’t always translate to being a great coach, don’t get me wrong, I’m optimistic, I want him to succeed. He’s just coming in at time we’re hungry as fans and won’t have the patience needed for him to get this off the ground. Most fans aren’t realistic will expect the turn around calipari did overnight his first season.
Cal wasn't an x's an o's guy, He was a salesman, creating a hub for the nba, When cal lost his three fellow coaches around two thousand nineteen, he couldn't cut it.He wasn't that good of a coach, really. Coach Pope Is a sergeant on that basketball court,
Roster retention is the key. I believe Pope will sign five freshman and probably three transfers. More than likely everyone that has eligibility on this year’s team will be back.
Mark pipe has been taught by the best of the best slick Rick and pop and Larry bird and players play ball and he has five and four star guys not 2 and 3 star guys he had at byu and won a lot of games in the big 12 you give him talent and his great staff pope will kill it he get us he is us and you need talent and his staff can coach and deal with egos Jason hart Alvin brooks is the best and Cody his staff is here to win and win big dan hurly and Nate oats didn’t win tournament games tell that got to the right school now looks at them
The roster wasn’t the main issue with Cal it was who he played and didn’t play and more than anything else it was his preparation with these freshman , he is the best recruiter ever and it’s not even close but he was absolutely horrible at big game preparation and it was so obvious based on watching games that mattered most and Cal was extremely stubborn and when something wasn’t working he refused to make adjustments and admit he was wrong .
Greg’s argument at the end is a little reductive. I don’t think Pope will have similar rosters to Cal. His intention is to still go after some high-end talent but compliment it with some guys you can retain. If he gets Moreno, Johnson, Mullins, and Yessafou, that would be one 5-star and three 4-stars. The only likely one-and-done is Johnson. He still could have Chandler, Garrison, Oweh, Perry, and Noah coming back. Get one or two glue guys in the portal and that’s a great mix of talent and experience, with plenty of guys he can retain for the following year for continuity.
You gotta give him a few years to build a team that has seniors with continuity. But in the meantime if he can just bring in elite talent to compete for the next few years then great
Coach Pope will get players of a caliber he hasn't been privileged to yet. He'll find a great balance, rest assured. It's new to him. More importantly, he'll get to literally pick n choose his style of player. Once his kids get a taste of winning with a dual sense of purpose, of an offense and a defensive mentality, his kids might stay longer than just a year just to hang a banner. Stranger things have happened.
I mean this as no disrespect but I only see Johnson and Wilson being the ONLY one and done players out of that group, with tounde and Mullins being 2 year players (both very raw) and Moreno being a 2-3 year player. I’d expect Otega and garrison to comeback, and possibly Kerr. That’s 3 starters too add to Johnson and Wilson.
Kentucky fans don't care what age the players are as long as they win. How are you this out of touch? Let me guess, neither of you live in Kentucky, do you?
Here is the thing, Pope will play 10 guys. Mullins, and Tounde can come in and play 20-25 minutes a game but not be relied on to be elite right away like a Cal class. We can have foundational returnees and transfers to shoulder the load, while letting elite freshman play a lot and help out until they are seasoned. The exact thing we wanted Cal to do, mix 10 very talented returnees/transfers and freshman and sophomore holdovers. I’d love to have the vast majority of the roster set with 5 or 6 guys coming back, 4 freshman, and then plug in 2-3 elite transfers you can spend big money on to carry a team if needed or fill a major hole.
The difference is 7 players leaving after this year maybe 2-3 more, get 4-5 high school guys 1-3 transfer players then the next year you have more guys left over only 2-3 high school recruits
Also Pope is getting system guys not just going after the top 10 guy, he went after Moreno and Jasper because there good but also Kentucky kids, and yes he’s a better X and O coach
It wasn't the problem with cals recruiting class it was the coaching, give us cals recruiting class with Mark Pope's coaching this will bring titles!!!!!
Young with vets is where cal went wrong he never had returners and cals players if they wasn’t his favorites he didn’t play them they was always looking over their shoulder plus cal lost his way he lost his x and o and Kenny Payne to keep the guys level headed last year he would play dj and Justin over rob and Reed and he had to put them in cause we got behind and they bailed us out
The difference is (ideally) Pope will try to recruit 3-4, retain 3-4, portal 3-4 hopefully creating a nice mix of young talent, experience, and “hungry” transfer players. Cal got kinda stuck in a rut where he might have 6-8 freshmen every year that were expected to carry most, if not all of the load. He finally was getting around to having 1-2 portal guys that could contribute. I think, and I have always said (when people complained about Cal and the one and dones) what coach would not want the most talented players available??? Answer, every single coach that coaches. The hard part is finding that proper mix. I hope and I believe that Coach Pope will do a much better job at creating and sustaining a good mix. Time will tell. Go Cats!!!!
We will see this year and next year how Pope and his staff adjusts during the season. We already know he is at least willing to change up defenses during games. Cal will never do that and stick with it.
Cal didn’t have roster issue he was too much into politics to play the right players. Then people wanted to bounce your either a cal guy or a guy who says he held me back aka booker ect….. pope with booker omg
Moreno and Johnson we’re state priority, I think we don’t need any more freshmen recruits who get minutes they don’t deserve. We have to find players who are willing to stay 3-4 years and earn the right to play and find each year only a couple talented freshmen that compliment. Every once in a while will there be generational talent worth throwing the bank at. If Johnson can’t play defense or is too ball dominant should he get all the minutes ? Cal would hang with 5 stars because his year to year recruiting depended on it. UCONN’s culture and recruiting aren’t prioritizing 4 or 5 freshman that aren’t willing to work for the minutes and aren’t guaranteed
Pope will get the best players he can recruit just like every other big name coach , it’s no different than any other coach , im so tired of “we only go after guys who fits our system “ BS u get any big name player and future pro u can and when a coach leans away from a big time future NBA it’s because he knows he’s a lock somewhere else , everyone try’s to over analyze the obvious. I would like to see a small forward wing, and I will be happy. I don't want a Cal starting 4 or 5 freshmen. I do trust Pope, he seems to be going for guys who fit his system, and he can actually coach. He has a pro system, and he is teaching Defense already, where Cal never taught D until late Jan / early Feb.
Cal is not a coach that is willing to change ANYTHING on the fly. That is his problem, if his way isn't working with a class then they are going eventually drown by March.
I think pope really needs more bodies because of everyone that has to leave this year. So he is getting more high talented players than I think he normally will once he has a few years to get his roster settled. Also, I am almost sure Moreno is here multiple years and I think Mullins and tounde have a decent chance of returning for another year. But I also think he will grab one or two 3 or 4 stars that will be here for a few years.
The difference is dilly and Shepard starts on pope team especially Shepard he from ky and the best player in college upside wise Roy in nba most likely
The NCAA is rumored to be considering putting in fifth year players permanently !, what if that becomes reality, what would a UK 25-26 team look like under Pope. ?
I like jasper mullons Wilson and Moreno . I could see mullons not comming bc ky should have Travis Perry watch and see and boy will turn heads this year pope will have to play him. Saw him play reed shperd I love reed but Travis out played him .40 plus points
