Some beautiful timberwork fellas. I did timberwork for 8 yeas. Love it. Due to my cancer and chemo treatments. My heart can no longer handle it. I'll miss it forsure. Love watching this
I took their timber framing class in April 2024. I can honestly say every one of these people is just as awesome in person as they appear in these videos. I miss it already.
So satisfying to watch. My husband and I built a shed and a small house timber frame. We have cleared and will be starting the Barn in the Spring. We are a couple of old New Englanders. 60 and 67 respectively. Keep up the fabulous work.
Good morning everyone!! Oh man some day I would love to take your courses on how to timber frame. I love the look and the history of this type of building. Sure beats stick framing!!!! I have a bandsaw mill and have cut Timbers to do an extension to my work shop. I won’t be doing the mortise and tenon build just some lap joints and timber lock screws. Should be a serviceable storage area. Thank you all so much for what ya do! God bless you all !!
Speaking of margaritas… the best one I’ve had is with Tanteo Tequila. They have naturally infused tequilas with spicy peppers: one is Jalapeño & the other is Habanero. I highly recommend!!
We find them equally difficult to work. We have noticed that green hemlock becomes incredibly hard to slick if you rough out your mortises the day before. Slick your mortises immediately after roughing them out with a chain mortiser.
Yes, that would be interesting. We are planing on building a timber-frame (kind of a hybrid) and we checked into the SIP and I can tell you that they are expensive! We go with spray foam with is quite pricey too but still quite a bit less than the SIPs.
Such an amazing video, the whole series of this one is amazing ahah and such a great team spirit lol. What are you using to fix the post to the concrete, looks like a pressure treated block fixed to the post but then how is that fixed to the concrete floor/sill. Expected to see the ABU
hi again, great video. Can't wait to see the rest. What thickness floorboards are you using to span the floor joists as they look about 3 - 4ft apart? i'd still love to do your course, but the cost of coming from the uk to do it is way out of my league and even the online course is currently out of reach due to the UK cost of living crisis.
I'm curious, do you have to tarp the entire structure each night overnight until you have it completely sealed, since it's essentially built from the inside out?
@@ShelterInstitute I’ve been “window shopping” the store’s tools before and since I started the on line course, and haven’t been able to catch some of the items in stock. I’m in no big hurry, but I was wondering if the “out of stock” items will be in stock for tomorrow’s sale? If not will there be another sale in the near future? (JF)
Lovely timber construction. Shame about the polystyrene in-fill. 👹 Do you know that every little white particle of that shit takes 500 years to break down. Worst inorganic insulation ever made.
Please, don't show compressed air being used like this in your videos! I did it for years and will still do it on my own projects but maybe blow piles of wood chips if the video editor wants action shots like that. Table 1 requriments if you know what I'm refering to. Love your videos and other than that, keep up the great work!
I didn't make it through. Much prefer the video style of the Martha's Vineyard series, with Gaius narrating. This is just annoying site chatter from the team, who we don't know. The rest of the videos are certainly in the can but hopeful the direction changes.

Thank you so much!! We strive to be awesome online and in person so good to hear. Come back and visit sometime!
Both your timber framing _and_ videography skills are impressive! I really like this approach. More please. 😎
I’m a carpenter who does timber framing on occasion and I love these types of videos ya’ll put out!

Thank you! Best of luck during your build.
Always glad to see a new Shelter video in the wild!
Impressive craftsmanship, amazing accuracy, a pleasure to watch
Beautiful craftsmanship, skill, and fit on the joinery.
Anyone else wants that margarita recipe? Awesome work, it's lovely to see the joints coming together.

Very informative . I like how all steps are shown

Love to watch you artists.
I'd love to be able to build my own timber frame home one day. Wish I was as closer to something like this. Looks amazing
Crazy beautiful wood

Absolutely amazing! I am just getting started in timber framing, and my 1st project is a sawmill shed. This could not be better timed!

How did you attach the posts to the PSL sil plate?
Nice job well done
Freaking loved it
Thank you for the video!
Anyone else dream of a Shelter Institute build on their property? 😊
Absolutely do. Love to know their prices to come down to VA.
I don’t like chicken mc nuggets, so no
What a beautiful art...
Sweet !
love these videos!!!
Thank you!!
Thanks for sharing.....Awesome.
Thanks for watching!
That's a beautiful build! What are the dimensions for it? I heard 30x32 if I'm correct.
Thank you! Yes that's correct. The main house is 30' x 32', which is connected to a 24' x 24' studio. The garage is 24' x 24' as well.
@@ShelterInstitute thank you for responding back to my question.
Just curious how you compare working with the hemlock compared to Doug fir
We find them equally difficult to work. We have noticed that green hemlock becomes incredibly hard to slick if you rough out your mortises the day before. Slick your mortises immediately after roughing them out with a chain mortiser.
Looks awesome..just curious on the cost of the frame and labor..
Yes, that would be interesting. We are planing on building a timber-frame (kind of a hybrid) and we checked into the SIP and I can tell you that they are expensive! We go with spray foam with is quite pricey too but still quite a bit less than the SIPs.
I want one of your fire sale frames please!

We have a timber frame barn that has a side splitting do to erosion. One giant vice was not enough to fix it.
Where do you order that sill plate from?

Thank you for watching! Our floor joists are 3ft on center and the decking is nominal 2 x 6 tongue and groove.
I'm curious, do you have to tarp the entire structure each night overnight until you have it completely sealed, since it's essentially built from the inside out?
Are you going to have a Dec sale on your tools?
Yes! Our annual sale is December 10th at our store in Maine and December 10th & 11th online.

How were you attaching the bents to the sill plate? It wasn't clear in the video.
I believe the whole structure is tied together once the SIP panels are installed, I'm sure in later episodes of this series we'll see that detail.
Are your pegs drawbored?
Great stuff. Why would you ever wanna poison your own crew, though ;-)
@16:45, I am seeing a block of pressure treated attached to the bottom end of a bent’s post? (JF)
1st :)
14:40 gross McDonald’s c’mon
Actually, that would be "taht"
