Agreed! It sounds good, the pencil wood isn’t all chipped or look like shrapnel, the point is sharp without being too sharp. A clear winner for me too.
Wow my uncle had an old school desk version of this from 1921. It was encased so you couldn’t see the workings. Well, only two days ago I was wishing I had it as it’s the best sharpener I’ve used (I’m a pencil artist after a new sharpener). I sat there wondering how it worked and low and behold, you just answered my question. Thank you 🙏🏻
I don’t care if these are antiques, but these are the most unintentionally badass pencil sharpeners I’ve ever seen (my personal favourites the 1907 patent)
It's OK. If we had these relatively modern tools of the past. We would have less time to talk to our friends at the pencil sharpening bin in primary school
I think the 1897 might have the best result but the 1907 is pure art, at least to me. Love these old pencil sharpeners and I can still remember the smell of fresh wooden pencils and machine oil from the old school ones I used. Beautiful!
Those old crank sharpeners were just the absolute best! I seriously LOVED getting up to go sharpen my pencil in class... The sound alone was just so satisfying!
Yes there's almost no place in current school for pencils anymore. Certainly even less in adult daily lives and many people prefer mechanical pencils. But I love old fashioned pencils and the smell of a sharpener and that razor point so much that I buy pencils and I own an electric sharpener anyway just so I can sharpen them and find an excuse to write on something. An electric sharpener is not nearly as satisfying but I don't see any old fashioned ones up for sale. It looks like many of the ones in public schools when I was a kid or left over from 1921 model where they had the horizontal bars with spiral grooves they want to use anymore but they were still bolted to the wall near the classroom door. All us ADHD kids founded such a relief to have to go to the pencil sharpener. It got us out of our chairs but also because our pencils were dull because we also pressed harder on the paper!
@@vishnuniji5393you can smell the slight wood shaving smell and you're smelling the metal of the oil gears grinding and even the lead itself seems to have a slight mineral smell. And all of that Rises up to your nose once the gears in the wood heat up from friction which is right about the time the point gets really good and sharp!
You can find ones that have the same internal sharpening mechanism as the 1921 sharpener. I got one a few years back by X-acto that was essentially the same as the much older Boston one my parents have. The particular model I and my parents have has a large rectangular suction cup on the bottom that works exceptionally well.

These sharpeners were not ubiquitous. You're basically looking at a crown and comparing it to modern beanies. You know what kind of sharpeners were in 1910's schools? Almost the exact same design that are in schools now. That rough, grinding style. Don't be fooled that old was always better.
That's what I was thinking. Those sharpeners always broke the lead on my pencils no matter how delicate I was being. Eventually, I switched to those lead pens
Honestly, sharpening your pencil before taking notes was always something I low-key enjoyed in Elementary school. Miss those days, my old friends, my great teachers .

@@YodaWhat then it was not "perfect" like the op says. but who needs competition, right?
Seriously it amazes me how simple modern sharpener is, salute to human brain
I think we all can relate to the 1921. It was still around in the 90s, and I think I just seen one just the other day
It's still around today. Yes. It's the same exact rollers angled at 15° or so
It was still around in 2016 when I graduated highschool
Kinda crazy to think people are still using 100 year old penile sharpener. I was ganna fix my typo but I laughed
We still had that thing well into the 2000's. Must be at least like 2010.
The modern design (at least the one used in public schools) is basically the 1921 model but smaller and fixed to the wall
Noticing how every single one of these look infinitely more effective, easy, faster, comfortable and more efficient than any and all wall mounted pencil sharpeners I ever encountered at any of the schools I went to.
but much bigger
Never ever in my life did I see a pencil sharpener built in a wall
Bro the 1921 version is literally the exact design (interior) that they have nowadays for the wall mounted sharpeners. It’s practically a necessity to have electric sharpeners or just mechanical/led pencils.
@@aw3someisme469 they don't have that clamp to hold the pencil in place, but yeah, pretty much exact same.
@@aw3someisme469 yep those always loved to break the lead. And then you had fish the lead tip out with a paper clip going in between the blades.
1897 is a clear winner for me. Love the action on that cutter
I would love to have one
Agreed! It sounds good, the pencil wood isn’t all chipped or look like shrapnel, the point is sharp without being too sharp. A clear winner for me too.
My man is never gonna be disappointed
Wow my uncle had an old school desk version of this from 1921. It was encased so you couldn’t see the workings. Well, only two days ago I was wishing I had it as it’s the best sharpener I’ve used (I’m a pencil artist after a new sharpener). I sat there wondering how it worked and low and behold, you just answered my question. Thank you 🙏🏻
Such a small task to be done, and yet human engineering throws everything at it! Truly fascinating!
1907 was perfection, so satisfying, just perfect
I don’t care if these are antiques, but these are the most unintentionally badass pencil sharpeners I’ve ever seen (my personal favourites the 1907 patent)
The perfect points on the 1896 & 1897 pencils are making me drool!
Same!
The f-
1897 ones seems to be the cleanest, smoothest finish
1896 look so smooth and 1907 is the most satisfying pencil I've ever seen sharpened
All wrong. 1897 is much smoother and sharper than the others
What I learned from this is that these old ones are satisfying and seem to work better than the ones today
The modern sharpeners are like free
Ofcourse they work better
It's OK. If we had these relatively modern tools of the past. We would have less time to talk to our friends at the pencil sharpening bin in primary school
yes
So satisfying how do they have this in the days?❤
Excellent pieces of engineering. They do the job, look great and made to last
LOVE PENCIL SHARPENERS! Deep appreciation for all antique gadgets! 1921 takes me back to my elementary years and that was in the early 80’s 😵💫
The 1896 looks just sick. Always loved this kind of machines
The smell of sharpening a pencil brings back a huge wave of nostalgia . I can almost smell this video
The older sharpeners sound so nice
The 1907 sharpener is the coolest thing I've seen in recent memory. That thing should still be a thing on the market.... I'd buy one today.
1897 is so relaxing. 1907 is very soothing and does it beautifully.
1907 is my favorite 🎉
I think the 1897 might have the best result but the 1907 is pure art, at least to me. Love these old pencil sharpeners and I can still remember the smell of fresh wooden pencils and machine oil from the old school ones I used. Beautiful!
Those old crank sharpeners were just the absolute best! I seriously LOVED getting up to go sharpen my pencil in class... The sound alone was just so satisfying!
They also had a distinct smell. Paint with heated (though not burning) wood. Funny the things you remember from your youth.
We would do it to waste time....and often got called out for it.
@@JohnJay-u3g I forgot about that! Grinding slowly...bringing the whole pack with you so sharpen! 🤣🤣
@@NicoleM2108you too, you are very very old 😂
@@mylenazvezta8486I am Gen X...I suppose so! hehee...I remember when grinding meant sharpening your pencil 🤣🤣
And they still work better then the ones made today. Really cool!
omg...The smell and the feel of the wood being shaved is just so satisfying for every kid! It should be so pointy!
what how can you smell it
Good point!
@@vishnuniji5393Have you ever used/sharpened a pencil before?
This has to be hands down the most satisfying short I've ever watched.
You know I had never considered what older pencil sharpners would be like. I am honestly impressed with how cool and functional they are.
I guess you all wish you were alive during 1800's?
Why were pencil sharpeners so satisfying back in the day😂
the perfect workmanship of these sharpeners is amazing
the length and sharpness of the 1896 one made me want to cry. it's beautiful.
Bro these pencils sharpeners working better than the ones we have now 😭💀
🍩
You can find ones that have the same internal sharpening mechanism as the 1921 sharpener. I got one a few years back by X-acto that was essentially the same as the much older Boston one my parents have. The particular model I and my parents have has a large rectangular suction cup on the bottom that works exceptionally well.
Hear me out
You can find nice pencil sharpeners but they're pricey.
So true
I love the fact that the pencil sharpener we had in my house growing up (late 80s early 90s) was fundamentally the same design in 1921
I never thought I'd care this much about a pencil being sharped but this is so satisfying to watch!
Thank you. Had the exact same thought.
This shows that pencil itself is the perfect invention that didn't need any modification
until, of course, the mechanical pencil
Lmao😂 thank you!
@@MadameMishkaerasable pen, anyone?
The design from 1921 was still being used in the early 2000's. That double cylinder setup unlocked core memories
Like never being able to put the cover back on properly!!!!
I was literally just thinking that. I remember these ones being stuck to the wall in elementary school.
They are still installed and used at my school
@@perinnial9149 Half of my teachers gave up and just stuck a permanent trash can under them lol.
1921 had to be the worst one all it does for me at my school is break pencils and the hand just don’t stop breaking…
Love this, feels like the pencil came out the cleanest and sharpest in 1897, but the sound of 1907 was so clean. They sure don't make em like that anymore xD but at least the modern shavings are good for making flowers
Videos like these always remind me that at some point we stopped trying to make things better and instead focused entirely on making things cheaper
And “cheaper” being for the corporation to increase profits, not to pass along savings to the consumer. Especially because things must be replaced far more often.
@@carolyntalbot947 thats planned obsolescence, babyy6y
Why does it need to be better, I get what you mean but that doesn’t really fit with this specific video.
Honestly cheaper is better because the 1921 is similar to now but since it’s cheaper without needing to change, that’s great
These sharpeners were not ubiquitous. You're basically looking at a crown and comparing it to modern beanies.
You know what kind of sharpeners were in 1910's schools? Almost the exact same design that are in schools now. That rough, grinding style. Don't be fooled that old was always better.
It needs to be better because the only people benefiting from it being cheaper is the corporation producing it.
So cool to see it go from running gears across the pencil, to slicing, dual guillotine, and so much more, just to come back to the gears
I like how these really old pencil sharpeners work better then the ones that were on the wall in classrooms
Edit: IM FAMOUS
That's what I was thinking. Those sharpeners always broke the lead on my pencils no matter how delicate I was being. Eventually, I switched to those lead pens
Schools have the budget to get the sharpeners in bulk but don't pay to have them sharpened only replaced when they finally give out
on the wall?!?
They either did nothing to your pencil or took the lead out. Hated those things
That may have more to do with school sharpeners getting less than zero maintenance than anything else.
Honestly these sharpeners are looking more modern than sharpeners nowadays ❤
Bro. That feeling when your lead was worn down to the perfect angle and it made your handwriting look 67x better
130 years old and still works. You have my vote to equip all schools with those models. Supports thinking, imanigination and creativity!
Honestly, sharpening your pencil before taking notes was always something I low-key enjoyed in Elementary school.
Miss those days, my old friends, my great teachers
.
:(
Why does this bring back memories
This shows the perfection of the design of pencils. They haven't changend in two centuries.
that is a big brain observation
1907 IS THE PLACE TO BE! Love that one! But I'm pretty certain we had the 1921 model in my elementary school! And I'm only 39! Great history lesson 👌🏼
same also remember that design from school
yeah! but 1910 for me!
I still have a 1921 like model that I purchased new back in the 80’s. Extremely solid construction. It’s tucked away but now I’m interested in seeing the manufacturer.
@@Klaus293 pencils are out of style of course. I still prefer them as a lefty, no smudges and as a lefty you have to push rather than pull and a pencil glides easier over the paper. And for drawing they are of course exceptional. So prop it up on your desk! Lovely piece of history!
@@jwvandegronden I can relate. Have you ever tried to write a paper from bottom to top/right to left? To therefore conceptualize your sentences backwards, to plan them out in reverse. So much fun..
It was those times when people used to think and apply genius ways of doing things the hard way.
The fact that the old sharpeners actually sharpened pencils better then modern cheap sharpeners
I miss pencils 😅 my elementary school had the ones from 1921. Had no idea they were so old because they worked PERFECTLY.
They just about never worked at my school, they were just to old and would keep breaking the ends
Same we had them too

Pencils aren't gone
@@wooxo1052 well I know it's just that they're nowhere near as prominent as they were when I was in school.
Same! I always used the mechanical sharpener in elementary/middle school and it always sharpened better than the electric counterparts which always seemed to fail halfway through the school year. I was going to a Catholic school but when I went to the public high school they didn't have the old sharpeners 😢
