  • Prog Magazine teamed up with Madfish in 2016 for an in-depth interview with guitar great and electronic dance music innovator Steve Hillage to explore the career highlighted by the 'Searching for the Spark 1969 - 1991' box set

Footage shot and edited by George Laycock of Blacktide Visual.
Here's part three (and the final) of a series of clips of the prog guitar legend, producer and ambient dance pioneer in conversation with Prog Editor Jerry Ewing about the box set and his entire career.
In this clip, Steve reminisces about "the harsh wind of punk", becoming type cast as a conservative hippy, and blowing those preconceptions out of the water in an interview and spontaneous jam with Jimmy Pursey (Sham 69). He also talks about his growing interest in electronic music, including watching people dance to Kraftwerk for the first time in a nightclub in Plymouth, and how he eventually took his signature 'sound' into dance music as System 7.

At last a true representation of what happened when punk came. Often walked to school with Yes, Genesis albums the Pistols and Stiff Little Fingers under my arm, and so did my mates. The tribal business was mostly written by journos, we just loved good music.

Yep, same with me, I still have a Prog Rock magazine issue where they interview members of the early British punk bands and every single one of them has a favorite Prog band or album. John Lydon is a huge Van Der Graaf Generator fan and JJ Burnel and Hugh Cornwell are both big Caravan fans, Topper Headon was a Genesis fan and Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible are Floyd fans.

"If you aren't hungry anymore to learn and progress, then this might be the time to stop." A wise sentence from a real genius and humble man - Steve Hillage! This words should be actually written in most musicians agenda from those "glorious" days! I was lucky enough to follow his work since his early days till now and I wouldn't be surprised if there will be unexpected changes to come. However ... may the muses keep staying close to him ✌!

There was lots more crossover of punks and progsters than people realise. Geoffrey Richardson of Caravan played with the Buzzcocks!

An interesting interview. I'd like to hear more about the difficult times that he mentions at the end.
