I had done this challenge before. Seeing how I'd be enthusiastic at the beginning, on Day One I got rid of 31 things, Day Two - 30 things, Day Three - 29 things....etc. I ended up getting rid of 800+ things. I STILL have loads of things to get rid of.
I just know myself well. I knew that at the beginning I'd be all enthusiastic and by the end my choices would be waning. It was really good for me. Some days I'd get rid of 90 things. I had dozens of tupperware/containers and lids without mates and I had over 100 pairs of socks, some still from high school. I need to continue with purging.
I really love this idea! I'm like you, I 'd be all gung-ho at the beginning, but then trying to think of ways to cheat as it went on. I've been through a pretty thorough declutter recently, but I'll definitely keep this in mind for next go-round.
Wow! It's always amazing to see how much we all manage to fit into our homes over time. Aside from the things from your childhood, did you come across anything that you didn't even remember you had?
Oh, of course! The phones, the graphing calculator, all the pictures, I even found my old cap and gown from college that I had definitely forgotten about! That said, I would go to lunch and open my phone and try to think of things to add to my list, and I was really surprised at how many things that I thought I had forgotten about that my mind was able to dig up so I could add them to the list.
I'm looking into becoming a minimalist when I depart from my current place (seperation), and I haven't heard of this approach. I'm happy for this approach, as it shows a new way to slowly become a minimalist, and well - thank you for opening my eyes to a new approach!
I can't take credit for inventing it. It was created by "The Minimalists," two guys who have a blog and made a documentary about minimalism. I've noticed quite a few videos of people sharing their experience with the challenge, so it may become more popular in the future. Good luck trying it!
Without realizing it, I was playing the 30 Day Minimalism Game last month. I just didn't count the items :) I did count the boxes I've donated (so far) and it's at 27. I do live with my 82-year-old mother and my 23-year-old son, one who is a hoarder and one who comes by minimalism naturally (I'll leave it to you to guess which is which), so I've had a pretty deep well from which to pull items. The three of us have lived in this house for five years and I was dismayed (horrified? aghast?) to come across boxes packed in 2012, moved (and that we paid to have moved) that were still unopened.
: o OMG that's crazy. All of that would definitely not fit into the back of a pickup truck. I understand where at least part of your motivation comes from now!
Compounding the issue is this: The woman we bought the house from is a hoarder, as in has storage units of items scattered all over the county. She left behind items we felt compelled to keep, with the thought she'd come back for them (including an entire garage full of stuff). The garage did get cleared out, but her items in the house ended up getting mixed in with ours. Combining my mother's and my household, plus adding in bits of the original owner's things created lots of stuff. I finally just got tired of moving items that weren't even mine from point A to point B to get at something else. And we've lived here long enough that if boxes are still unpacked, then we don't need those items. It is interesting though how people can develop blind spots about items or clutter or situations and systems that don't work. And then one day it's just too much and too cluttered. My son has gone through purges like this with me before, but it has alarmed my mother. She's afraid I'm going to sneak in and take away all her clothes in the middle of the night. :)
Wow, that's incredible. You bought the house, you have no obligation to store her junk! Also, I just discovered that I'm apparently not receiving notifications when people reply back to my comments, so that's lame. A friend of mine has a kind of similar situation to you. She lives with her dad (or did until very recently) and was trying to declutter many generation's worth of forgotten stuff, tools, and equipment, and met with lots of opposition, so she focused mostly on the spaces that were solely hers. Who knows, maybe after a while your mother will admire what you and your son have done and want to do it herself!
We had no obligation, true, but we liked her and her extended family, and we did have that nice big garage. :) It became clear later that she was in over her head when it came to the amount of items she owned. At the time we just thought we were helping out. Her son eventually explained the extent of the situation as he hauled her belongings away. When you mention above about multi-generational clutter, this lady had items from two deceased husbands, their family's posessions going back a few generations, plus items she's accumulated in her 80 plus years on this planet. It's an amazing amount of stuff. She still is burdened with her belongings, where to store them, are they safe, etc. I feel acutely her anxiety--it's palpable in waves when I talk to her. It makes me sad that items she believes give her joy actually have such a major negative impact on her life. There is hope for my mother. She recently threw out a water pitcher with a broken handle that had been a wedding gift to my paternal grandmother back in 1927 (and that had been packed and moved with us.) That's cross-generational and cross-familial clutter :) I'm amazed she hadn't yet tried to give it to me as being an item that was "related" to me. :)
can you talk about how to properly throw all these things out? sometimes i keep stuff just because it doesn't seem right to throw or recycle or even donate. helpppp
I have a video on how to responsibly get rid of clothing/shoes/accessories, but the same principles could apply to just about anything: th-cam.com/video/kVVqCAZ3ABU/w-d-xo.html What items are you struggling with?
We started KonMari about a year ago and I don't feel like we've really finished yet. I've always been interested in the MInimalism Game and loved that you've done both ways. Glad to find your channel, I'll be following along!
Swapping it up every now and then can be fun and help to put a dent in things. Someone else recommended the "100 things challenge" as a way to quickly declutter on a weekend. Mix it up and see if that helps!
Thanks, for the suggestion. We've started KonMari over a year ago and have gone through all the categories. This year we're going through them all again and not moving along until the category clicks and everything has a real home. We still do go around and throw stuff in the donate bin, but that seems to have slowed down lately. Our space isn't done, but it's so much easier to clean and manage already. I love minimalism!
This was a nice video on minimalism but I feel the need to comment my appreciation for your clips playing with the McDonalds Furbys before discarding them. "This was more fun than I thought" -- thanks for that laugh. :)
Yes I totally agree with you feel like it pushes you to find stuff to declutter. Which is nice. The game is really good. I found it challenging to do, but I played it 3 months ago and I’m still decluttering.
Thank you for sharing your story! I've been following the minimalist lifestyle for over a year now and it has really helped with my studying/ living at uni because I just don't have to worry about how much stuff I have to bring back when I visit home during the holidays :)
Ahh! I did a very similar thing in college. I actually talk about it in this video at 0:50 th-cam.com/video/LMPvgWILRLo/w-d-xo.html . It was really important to me to have all of my possessions with me, so I made everything I owned fit into one suitcase. That was really the height of my minimalist experience, at least so far. Good luck with school!
THOSE FURBIES. I am dying. This was extremely motivating. It feels like it would be a waste to start it in February, so I'm going to plaaan to do this for the month of March. Very awesome.
I watched the 3rd purge first and went back to watch this oldest one. It's fun to see the items that I saw you finally purged in the 3rd go around like the under bed bin and those wrapping paper sample items in the guest room. Proud of you! this game gets really tough after a while!
Haha, yep! As I said, it really forces you to prioritize everything, so you can sort of watch the prioritization line shift as I continue decluttering.
Somewhat ironically, the doll was decluttered twice: once by my mom, who sent it to me, and then again in this video. I'm sure that doll will go on to terrify some other child and then eventually be decluttered yet again. Good luck!
Loved this! Thank you for both the detail and the speed of this, it was great to see everything but not have it take an hour to talk through everything. Just found your channel and excited to see if you’ve continued more videos like this- if not, more decluttering please!
I have two other 30 day minimalism game videos, so you can continue to watch me get rid of stuff! Fair warning, the latest one is pretty long because I wanted to show more about where the items came from in my house, and I share some extra reflections at the end.
Feels so much better and lighter and doable watching your channel. I did Kon Mari and I was obsessed. It helped me so much. I've never heard of the 30 day challenge. It sounds and looks so relieving. My difficult area is with my grown childrens' homeschooling papers and cards. I've thrown out most of it but stilling hanging on. I know one day I will let them go but not yet. Thank you for showing me how to unemotional ly detach from stuff. 💕
Thanks! I think I'm probably not as detached from my possessions as I seem on videos--that's just the part you see--though I do have a much different relationship to those possessions than I had previously. What you don't see is that I constantly evaluate my possessions all the time and consider whether or not I really need them. That way, by the time I'm ready to declutter again, I have a good idea of what I'm ready to part with. Speaking of emotional attachment, I think you should definitely keep whatever sentimental items make you happy, but, if there are some things that you don't really want but can't bring yourself to let go of, I made a whole video on the topic: th-cam.com/video/iD3D80lf9CM/w-d-xo.html Hope it helps, and good luck!
This is a great idea! I was worried about whether or not I'd be able to do it but after seeing you do office supplies and craft supplies I know there's a bunch in my apt I can get rid of! My konmari wasn't as successful as I'd like in every area of my possessions so I know this will help me with continuing!
😂🙌🏽 love the doll solution. I grew up with a huge collection of porcelain dolls because apparently EVERYONE thought I liked them... I stored them in their boxes backward in the back of my closet growing up. So freakin creepy
My grandmother gave me that doll, and I remember hating it even when I was little. It's actually in my trunk right now along with some other items to take to a women's and children's shelter. The Beanie Babies and Furbies I thought about selling as a lot, but I ended up donating them to a thrift store to get them out of my house sooner. Whoever buys them from the thrift store will probably sell them as a lot and make a little money back.
Good call on the Beanie Babies, they're one of those items that people think are really valuable but actually would sit on a sales website for ages and therefore stay in your house. Also selling stuff is such a hassle as you field people's enquiries and box stuff up and post it. My method recently has been donate donate donate. I've only got one shelf of books to sell on Amazon because each book will fetch £20-£100, but any less than that and I'm donating it.
That's a great idea! A few other people have said that they've played this game with their partners. Whoever didn't complete the challenge "lost" and the winner got to pick which restaurant to go to. You could try something similar with your family to make it more interesting and keep everyone motivated!
That's a great idea! I think that I might have more success if we did it together. I have 2 boys who tend to be a bit on the side of wanting to keep everything. I read somewhere that someone did the 30 days in reverse because she knew that she would be most enthusiastic in the beginning of the project. I love your hair, by the way, It's really pretty.
I'm watching these out of order and find it fascinating to see you get rid of something with seemingly no regret in one video and then the next video ai watch, you are keeping that same item because you aren't ready to part with it yet. It just goes to show that the mentality of getting rid of stuff is ever evolving.
Absolutely! There are some things in this video that I knew I would eventually get rid of, but, as this game really helps me to prioritize everything, there were other things I wanted to get rid of first. That said, my perceptions definitely did/do change over time. I'm sure even things that survived round three will start to seem unnecessary with time!
Congrats on winning the Minimalism game! I took the challenge back in Feb 2017. Yes, I started in February to give myself an easier challenge : ) I didn't stop at the end of the month and go back to my old consumerist ways. No, the philosophy behind at taken root in my mind, and the game was just the starting point. Like Miss Minimalist opines in her blog and books, the game was for me like pulling the plug on the bathtub drain. It was the tipping point that led to a drastic reduction in the stuff in my home over the last 14 months.
Thanks! I'm so glad the game helped you to start your downsizing journey. This wasn't my first rodeo--I've been on my own journey for almost two years--but I found the game to be really fun and addictive. I'd like to do it again soon!
That doll was chilling. I love your videos! I've downsized my clothes to fewer than 100 items and you've got me going through them again more ruthlessly. Keep up the good work!
I love your idea to gift the movie cards to a large family at the theater! We have five kids and that's such an expense...but also something some families love to do! Way to bless someone while cleaning out.
The " Meat masher " is one of the only new kitchen gadgets that I use! I do not regret buying it at all. I use it to break up all my hamburger, turkey burger, and chicken burger. I use nothing else, it is my go to!! Got my mom and sister-in-law using it also. Love, love it!! 😁
Ha! Just goes to show that the same thing can have dramatically different value to different people. All that matters is that we know what adds value in our own lives. I hope mine is snatched up by someone who will enjoy it even half as much as you. ;)
Been decluttering for 6 years now! But that’s after living in the same house for nearly thirty years and raising 4 children in it. Some children’s items we kept for examples a cot, high chair, good quality basic toys - these came in handy for grand children’s visits in the last couple of years. Started with Andrew Mellen then lots of videos like these. Used a throw away every 5th book method and expanded that to all items: its either five items or none, six has to be ten, eleven has to be fifteen etc and that got things moving bery quickly. Haven’t tried Kon Marie but will do for ‘last leg’ phase. It’s been a long ongoing task but rewarding. The house is looking so bare and lost any cosiness so just purchased some new designer cushions for the sofas- is that a step backwards I ask? I have this urge to fit my life into one medium sized suitcase - still working on it! I ask myself if I had to leave in a hurry what would I take and this has helped a lot. Also I work from home so thats an hour extra set of stuff - though I’ve been working on slimming down to strictly necessary items , I do need my PC, lap top, monitor and graphics pad, and a collection of books and folders. I’ve attempted to keep Kindle books and pdfs in place of physical books but to be honest I find reading from paper books more convenient. Working from home space is a separate area of decluttering.
Thanks for sharing your story! I totally understand wanting to simplify but not lose the coziness. Part of what has helped me is that my house is fairly small to begin with, so I haven't reached the point of having too much open space. Are you considering downsizing your home? If so, that will help a ton. If not, you could consider giving each space a new purpose or even sort of closing off un-used space in your house and narrowing own the spaces in the house that you actually use. The documentary "Minimalism" (it's on Netflix), featured someone who made heat maps of how much of our homes we typically use, and they found that, on average, people use about 40% of the total living space of their homes, which is a TON of wasted space. By the way, I actually was able to fit all of my possessions into a medium suitcase when I went off to college! I think I even showed the suitcase in one of my videos--can't remember which one. I'm pretty settled in my house--we won't be moving any time soon, but I 100% understand that motivation. Good luck!
Samaritan's purse collects small toys for Operation Christmas Child or if you want to make a few bucks, Beanie Babies are a fairly popular collectible.
I did the 100 things challenge. It's great if you only have a weekend. I too realized there's much to discard afterwards and plan on doing it again in spring.
Good idea! I just commented elsewhere that I'm debating between A) doing the 30 day game again in a month or two, or B) trying the "one thing a day" challenge for a few months. The 100 things challenge sounds really simple and compact though. I like it. I'll have to keep that in mind.
I love your videos! I finished the konmari method this past November and have been thinking of giving the mins game a go again. (I failed last time I tried, but I tried at a time where I knew I would be pulling long hours for the month on the job...bad decision). I think you just peaked my interest again with this video. My spark joy always wages war with my minimalist desires. 😊 Plus, my goal is a travel trailer, so I've got a ways to go.
#vanlife, I am obsessed with those videos! I've said this before, but, if it weren't for the cat and the husband, that would be my goal as well. A few thoughts: 1) (I need to put this in a video because I say it in comments constantly) I've been decluttering for a while, so it's taken me some time to realize this, but now I understand that I can continue to delay hard decisions and live with stuff I don't actually want or need for a few more years/until the decision is easier, or I can make the hard decision now and have the simple home I want now, instead of a few years down the road. 2) I haven't done this, but it occurs to me that you could give yourself a physical limit on the "sparks joy but is actually ridiculous to keep" stuff, e.g. whatever fits into a box. That could give you a way to prioritize the joy-sparking things, keep them contained, and help you declutter gradually. Good luck!
Great job! I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I LOL at the pens and the beanie babies ; how did you ever cram all those writing implements in that paper cup?! I have been a lifelong minimalist, a bit akin to Marie Kondo and her love for organization at age 5. I had very minimal possessions and loved being able to sojourn lightly in life. However, a few years ago, a series of very stressful life events led me to hang on to a few things I inherited and I kind of became a compulsive shopper for a season of shop-therapy. Throw in some affluenza from finally having more disposable income and I had a problem. I also happened to marry a hoarder who has clutter-blindness. I nearly went mad! I cannot handle having too many things; I start feeling enslaved by all the stuff Today I sorted through so many papers and memorabilia and recycled what seems like 30 lbs of paper while watching this video on repeat. I'm loving all your videos!! Thank you and best wishes from Berkeley. :)
Wow, you've really gone from one extreme to the other! Since you have minimalist roots and you get the philosophy, it shouldn't take you too long to get back to a place you're happy. And decluttering is fun, so enjoy it! I'm glad you liked the video! Good luck!
LOL - - Free-Standing Electronic Towel Warmer ... "living out here in the storage unit for a couple of years" ... PERFECT first item for The 30 Day Minimalism Game!!!
I have been decluttering my entire life of 63 years. I had to because I raised 4 kids in a smallish house. Now I just do a closet, drawer, dresser, or room at a time when I am in the mood. I have only regretted a couple of things over all these years. My craft stuff, my sewing stuff, and my guitars are not going anywhere! I just keep them organized and put away.
Do it! Like I said, I do think there are some advantages to doing something like the Kon Mari method first, if you're just getting started, but, on the other hand, if this is more motivating to you, do this! I've actually been considering doing it again lately... we shall see.
Vested Interests I think Noch ein is more than enough... Noch ein Beer... noch ein Wine :D works well... this combined with a Danke is great and with an Entschuldigung in case of any spillage.... pretty sure you 'd do great over here. :D
How I wish I could have your garden hose because it will make good use to me in my garden. That cat candle can be a good side decoration for either your room or in your bathroom or in your side table inside your room
Thank you so much for filming the whole thing! Very helpful. Love the tone of your videos. You are so natural and absolutely hilarious. Have you considered doing stand-up comedy? Or writing for others? Looking forward to your next video
I was actually looking for something in my husband's closet a little while ago and I saw another pencil case (the exact same colors) and thought, "Wait a minute, I already got rid of this!" but when I asked him about it he said it had been there for years and he had been using it, so I guess we had two identical Spacesaver pencil cases from the 90s and didn't even know it!
Wow! This is the first video that I've watched about the minimalism game. I'm in a process of decluttering my tiny room and still i just got rid of papers and books. But there's still a lot of decluttering. This inspires me and it's easier to do than the konmari style for me. I just want to know how do you get rid of those things you've decluttered? I hope you'll have a video on what to do with decluttered stuff. Like what should be donated, throw in the garbage, etc.I enjoyed this video by the way!
I do have a video for how to responsibly declutter clothing, and the same principles can be applied to many things: th-cam.com/video/kVVqCAZ3ABU/w-d-xo.html I was able to donate or recycle most of the items, but there were a few things I had to trash. I advise looking into what your local recycling service allows to be recycled. Lots of things like DVDs and toothbrushes and plastic bags cannot be recycled in most single stream recycling systems, so it's always worth checking first.
Please donate the toys. You can give them to childrens‘ homes, homes for refugees or maybe even animal shelters and organizations to help the homeless (who also have children and pets, or may themselves be happy to have a „friend“). 😊 At least in Europe this would be possibilities.
The purple beanie baby is worth a fortune it’s the princess Diana one so sell it wisely! I also did this challenge in January and I really enjoyed it! It gave me a really big push to getting certain areas clean! I am going to do it again in November ready for Christmas!
Iiiii may have just dropped them off at a thrift store. Someone else can try to sell them if they want. Ha, and it seems we were doing the same thing all month long. :) I've been debating whether or not to do it again soon. I'll dig around and see if there's another method I want to try. Otherwise, I might take another crack at it in a few months. Doing it around the holidays sounds like a really good idea!
Vested Interests ah the purple beanie is worth thousands! Are you on the app minimalism amino?? I blog on there and did the minimalism challenge on there. I also started with kon Marie! Lots of people have good ideas! In March I’m going to do the no spend challenge unless it’s food, cleaning items or toiletries that I desperately need like deodorant then I’m buying nothing 👍
I am not. I'm actually trying to delete apps, but I'll check it out later none-the-less. Good luck with your spending fast! I remember being strangely panicked by the thought of a spending fast, but it's not difficult and it really takes the power out of shopping. Good luck!
It's pretty incredible how easy it becomes to recall pockets of garbage when you have a set number of things you have to part with that day. Even on the plane, away from your stuff, I'd bet your brain is able to remember things you haven't thought about in years that you can get rid of. Best of luck!
I think that deep blue Beanie Baby might be very valuable. You might want to research it. What do you do with credit cards? Just shred? Same for old greeting cards you've received. Did they go in the trash? If you have a whole bunch of cards, craft supplies, board games, etc, you can donate them to a retirement home. I'm confused because most people separate things into "Donate", "Trash", "Repair", "Sell", etc, and I wanted to see what is actually good enough to donate in your eyes. Thanks for getting me in the mood to purge.
Beanie Babies are only valuable if there are people out there who want to buy them! The credit cards I dropped off at my bank. They have a program to safely destroy credit cards, even metal ones. Cards I received went in recycling. I have made a video on what I do with decluttered clothing, and the same principles can be applied to just about anything: th-cam.com/video/kVVqCAZ3ABU/w-d-xo.html I've donated to women and children's shelters, Dress for Success, a local Re Store, an animal shelter, charity shops (whose profits go to an actual charity), and normal thrift stores, it just depends on the item, but I try to donate to the place I think it will have the most value. Retirement homes are a good idea too--I haven't thought about that option! I am a bit picky with what I donate. If I don't think it's likely to be valuable to someone else, I recycle it if that's an option, but I do try to consider donation options first. The trouble is, if it's not something that the organization wants, they might just throw it in the trash instead of recycling it, so I only donate things I am fairly confident will be used again. I almost never sell because I don't have the patience for it and I prefer to get the items out of my house ASAP. I have listed a few things on craigslist for free, and they've found new homes pretty quickly.
hi! where do you exactly give or dispose the stuff that you declutter? I have actually decluttered a lot of things already but I don't know where to give and throw these things away..
If someone really follows the Konmari method the way it's expressed in her book, they should be set for a very long time. Going by category is only one aspect of the method. I read the book and used it to some degree to do a big purge a few years ago, but I recognize I didn't do it in a truly thorough manner, because I have just needed to do a great deal of purging again, which wouldn't be necessary if you followed the book to the letter. Congrats on getting rid of all those things! I liked the rules you set for yourself at the beginning.
Of course! That is only one part of her method, and it was not my intent to capture her entire method in this video. I appreciated some of the reflections she included in her second book, and, if I remember correctly, she spoke about how she was a little too proud about the infallibility of her method and some of her clients "relapsed" and did need to make more than one pass at decluttering. In my experience, decluttering, like anything in life, takes practice, and the more I do it the more I refine my own mindset, and that has had a huge impact on what and how I declutter. I have noticed that the way I feel about my possessions definitely evolves over time, so something I decide to keep at one point in time may be something I decide I no longer need a few months down the road. At least for me, the KonMari Method is one tool in my tool belt, but it is not the only one. Good luck with your own decluttering journey! It sounds like you've uncovered some more of the nuances of her in her method, so hopefully that can take you even further!
Thanks for getting back! I really got as much value out of that book as out of any other self-help type book I have read. Decluttering and purging is, I think, the first step anyone should take in self-improvement generally. It clarifies your life so much, and gives you great energy and ambition to do more with what you do have remaining. That having been said, I do think the Konmari method can come across as being for (relatively) rich people only. The "spark joy" standard is not really affordable as a short-term standard for most of the people in the world, not even for many first world people. Joy and pleasure in ownership can be a valid long-term goal, but I have found I really need to keep all that is useful- and we have a very good income. Granted, with a large family to provide for, we have less disposable income than many. On the positive side, proper purging increases your interest/pleasure in what does remain. And you can plan to replace things over time.
Love this!!!!! One of your best videos. I’m so inspired I will be starting the same thing now. Just to let you know, google “Beanie Baby Turkey” and check out the prices people are asking! I had a whole tub load of Beanies and my son begged for them. He told me about the turkey, so he has plans to cash in on some of them. I am following you on Instagram. Happy Decluttering!
I took them to a thrift store. : / The turkey does look like it would fetch a nice price, but I really didn't want to keep them around and wait for them to possibly sell. Whoever finds them can try to sell them if they're more patient than me! Good luck doing the challenge! It is very addictive and fun.
are those two items (one orange and one is like blue green) are they soaps? may I ask? You may throw them in your washing machine to clean your sensitive clothes and surely they will smell good as well as your doing the fabric good and in tip top shape
Yes, those gem shaped things were soaps, and I did find a way to use them up quickly. I cut them up and put them in a soap dispenser with water. I realize it might not count to some as getting rid of them, since I used it up, but I figured it was better than throwing them away.
I would of love those amc gift cards! lol I love it when I receive gift cards rather than other gifts I may not like.. lol. I was dying for all of those beanie babies and toys for my classrooms little store lol
Everything you said "remember that" I was like yes! Haha that doll was scary. My mom still has a ton of my beanie babies...remember we were supposed to be millionaires off those lol
Those little glasses bags from day 10 are perfect for zero waste bulk food shopping - i'd kill for them right now...jars are heavy ...and I'm a cyclist lol
I didn't even think of that! You could probably go to an eyeglasses/sunglasses retailer or even a Nordstrom Rack and ask if they have extras. If a brand they carry changes their bags every season, they might be required to switch to the new ones and have old bags they can't use.
I love your no-nonsense, no-filler, matter-of-fact, presentation style. Your videos are definitely binge-able.
I agree. I feel oddly safe watching and listening to her.
Bring Beanie Babies to police or ambulance station. They carry small stuffed animals to comfort children on the scene of crime or accidents.
Ooo, that's a really good idea. I'll keep that in mind in the future!
OMG this is so sweet. I have so many extra stuffies my kid doesn’t need I’m totally doing this.
Wow! That’s good to know. How sweet.
Firefighters use them too :)
Laura U Great idea.
I had done this challenge before. Seeing how I'd be enthusiastic at the beginning, on Day One I got rid of 31 things, Day Two - 30 things, Day Three - 29 things....etc. I ended up getting rid of 800+ things. I STILL have loads of things to get rid of.
Nice! Ha, I never thought of doing it in reverse, but that does sound like it could yield an interesting outcome.
This is so smart!! Starting with more and working down! Props for thinking of that!
Ann G. R. Hi. This is also the way I did it 😘. So pleased I am not the only one who decluttered in reverse numbers 😂! 🤗
I so love the dry style. Makes me giggle
Your cat looked like “please don’t get rid of me!”
Vested Interests How could you get rid of Miss Marple... 😖 lol!
I counted our pens, we had 132. I'm donating 100 of them to a school.
All those sticky little things... Good job!
It's really refreshing to see a straightforward video. Awesome work decluttering
Without realizing it, I was playing the 30 Day Minimalism Game last month. I just didn't count the items :)
I did count the boxes I've donated (so far) and it's at 27.
You only have one life, get rid of everything or move out. Also start going to the gym. You have been lazy enough already using others as an excuse.
can you talk about how to properly throw all these things out? sometimes i keep stuff just because it doesn't seem right to throw or recycle or even donate.
It WAS more fun than I expected!
Veronica Martinez loves that too!
Yes I totally agree with you feel like it pushes you to find stuff to declutter. Which is nice. The game is really good. I found it challenging to do, but I played it 3 months ago and I’m still decluttering.
Very nice! I'm itching to do it again soon.
I love what you did with the AMC gift cards. I’ll have to keep that in mind with future unwanted gift cards I receive or hold on to!
I'll check it out and subbed!
THOSE FURBIES. I am dying. This was extremely motivating. It feels like it would be a waste to start it in February, so I'm going to plaaan to do this for the month of March. Very awesome.
Go for it! You won't be sorry.
Sell the beanies on eBay or a Facebook group dedicated to them. Collectors will want them. There are whole communities dedicated to that stuff online.
The Mad Lolita People are crazy
but then you're just ENABLING peoples bad habits hahaha
I watched the 3rd purge first and went back to watch this oldest one. It's fun to see the items that I saw you finally purged in the 3rd go around like the under bed bin and those wrapping paper sample items in the guest room. Proud of you! this game gets really tough after a while!
Haha, yep! As I said, it really forces you to prioritize everything, so you can sort of watch the prioritization line shift as I continue decluttering.
That doll ... You made me LOL !!!!! I am indeed motivated to tackle my stuff. Thanks for your videos!
The 30 day challenge sounds perfect for your situation. Hope it helps!
Burn the doll, sell the beanie babies.
Susan D I'd use thr doll to scare my sister 😂
Hahaha
Good call on the Beanie Babies, they're one of those items that people think are really valuable but actually would sit on a sales website for ages and therefore stay in your house. Also selling stuff is such a hassle as you field people's enquiries and box stuff up and post it. My method recently has been donate donate donate. I've only got one shelf of books to sell on Amazon because each book will fetch £20-£100, but any less than that and I'm donating it.
That’s a great idea! This Winter I might have to see if I can get the whole family on board it out.
Thanks! Best of luck!
Yay! I'm so happy for you!!! That sounds awesome.
12:17 I have that exact same turkey! (Left hand side) I put him on our dining room table around Thanksgiving time
dont you wish you could ask your cat or dog what kind of toys they would like and if they will even play with them?
"Kitten, what kind of toys would you like?" ... She blinked. She's not giving me much to go on.
I love your idea to gift the movie cards to a large family at the theater! We have five kids and that's such an expense...but also something some families love to do! Way to bless someone while cleaning out.
Beanie Babies:
Military
Hospitals
Fire Dept/EMS/Police
Preschool
Churches that distribute items to disaster zones
Wow I bet that felt so good. The closet looks so good.
Thanks! It felt GREAT!
haha @18:00 "the answer is never yes!" very true words though.
awesome video!
"The answer is never Yes"...so true!
What a satisfying video! Good job.
The kitty looked so worried! “Please don’t get rid of me!” 😂
Great work. I’m inspired to tackle my house now. 🙂
Yay! Good luck!
I stopped this video so I could go follow you on IG. I really love this idea and will start it in March.
Nice! Good luck! I really enjoyed it, it was loads of fun, and it can quickly become an obsession, which I was ok with.
this was actually so fun to watch! i'm excited to start the 30 day minimalist challenge!!
Yay! Thanks! Best of luck!
Ahaha the commentary is great.
Also, thanks for inspiring me! I've done this 2 months in a row, and I'm feeling great!!
That's awesome! I want to do it again (it would be my fourth time), but I'm not sure if I will have time before the new year...
The pens in the cup and terrifying doll made me laugh! Thanks!
I hope mine is snatched up by someone who will enjoy it even half as much as you. ;)
Dear Lord, I'm on my way to being a hoarder. I want all this woman's tossed items and I don't need them. Forgive me. 😭
Nooooooo
Lolx 😂😂😂 i saw a few pieces i was like 🤔 but no no dont need it ill oogle from a distance.
Love your honesty. Stay strong...walk away...do you NEED it? You can do this!!!
Sounds like you need specialist help.
I know ... I was going thru saying “ I want that... I’d take that...😂”
LOVE how detailed this is
Loved it! Oh moms that send us things 🤦🏼♀️😍
Good luck!
Do you have concrete floors? Your home looks so cool.
I do! And thanks! They're great at keeping the house cool in the summer.
New sub. You seem like a really amazing person. Thank you for making these videos. You’ve made a difference in my life.
Welcome, and thanks so much! I'm glad you like the videos and good luck with your own journey!
I love this idea 💕
I live with hoarders, so this would be a perfect way to get stuff out the house without people noticing
Samaritan's purse collects small toys for Operation Christmas Child or if you want to make a few bucks, Beanie Babies are a fairly popular collectible.
I liked your idea and will try it for Feb.
That doll scared the crap outta me. I was half asleep. Thanks for taking 2 hours off my rest. 😲
This is such a cool idea!
The beanie babies and terrifying doll commentary cracked me up! Thanks for the laughs 😆
It's kind of ironic that we give children such horrifying toys sometimes, right?
Good luck!
Oh, and the pen cup is glass. There were so many pens in it that the pens were serving as scaffolding for other pens.
I would have loved that towel warmer
LOL - - Free-Standing Electronic Towel Warmer ... "living out here in the storage unit for a couple of years" ... PERFECT first item for The 30 Day Minimalism Game!!!
It had definitely outstayed its welcome, so it was the first thing I thought of!
Very nice! You've found your priorities, which is really helpful because it shows you what ISN'T a priority.
Love this! Think I may have to play this game every month until I get my house where it needs to be :)
Do it! Like I said, I do think there are some advantages to doing something like the Kon Mari method first, if you're just getting started, but, on the other hand, if this is more motivating to you, do this! I've actually been considering doing it again lately... we shall see.
Glad you and your husband are on the same page here...
He's actually helping me with the Minimalism Game this time around! It's been interesting to see what he's decided to get rid of.
just discovered your channel and I love your videos. greetings from Germany
Danke mucho! My German is clearly on point. I can say "noch ein" and "entschuldigung." That basically covers everything, right?
Vested Interests I think Noch ein is more than enough... Noch ein Beer... noch ein Wine :D
works well... this combined with a Danke is great and with an Entschuldigung in case of any spillage....
pretty sure you 'd do great over here. :D
Beanie babies.... take them to goodwill ....some child will be excited to get them 😄
Fabulous work. Thank you for this video!
Ive heard about this game in theory but never how it looks during the process its great you filmed it bc youll inspire ppl
Oh good! I'm glad it could help. I have two other minimalism game videos if you feel like checking them out.
How I wish I could have your garden hose because it will make good use to me in my garden. That cat candle can be a good side decoration for either your room or in your bathroom or in your side table inside your room
lol, the point is to get rid of things, not find new ways to keep them!
Thank you so much for filming the whole thing! Very helpful. Love the tone of your videos. You are so natural and absolutely hilarious. Have you considered doing stand-up comedy? Or writing for others? Looking forward to your next video
lololol I would die on a stage. I'm glad you liked it though!
:D
pillow storage nice idea
Your response to your childhood boxes was hilarious.
The happy meal furbies were surprisingly fun to play with. I wonder whatever happened to my real furbies...
New subscriber. Saw this video and can’t wait to watch more of your videos.
I'm not sure I will be getting rid of this much stuff very often, but we'll see. Thanks!
So funny, I had that same exact space maker pencil holder. It just broke maybe a year ago.
Wow! Very impressive.
Beanie babies you can sell on ebay, or if they where used for display only, some hospitals will take them for the ER for kids.
At least in Europe this would be possibilities.
Yep! Most of the toys are in my car now, waiting to be dropped off at a local women's and children's shelter.
this is amazing! well done!
Good luck!
The purple beanie baby actually isn't worth as much as people think, there are hundreds of them for sale on ebay which lowers its value a lot.
Things are only monetarily valuable if other people are willing to buy them, and no one is.
I am overseas from the US right now & cannot wait to get home to Alabama to start SOMEWHERE but I will have 12 hours on a plane to decide!!
It's pretty incredible how easy it becomes to recall pockets of garbage when you have a set number of things you have to part with that day. Even on the plane, away from your stuff, I'd bet your brain is able to remember things you haven't thought about in years that you can get rid of. Best of luck!
I miss ur videos. Watching on Repeat. Please come back.
❤💙💜
That pencil box took me wayyyy back! haha
If I had a couple of Yikes! erasers, it would have been perfect!
Great video I'm going to start right now. Thank you
That's awesome! Best of luck!
hi! where do you exactly give or dispose the stuff that you declutter? I have actually decluttered a lot of things already but I don't know where to give and throw these things away..
I made a whole video about this for clothing, but the same principles can be applied to most things: th-cam.com/video/kVVqCAZ3ABU/w-d-xo.html
"...and a very lonely paper shredder" XD poor paper shredder!
🤣 I was laughing so hard about the Furbies, lifelike doll and Beanie Babies!
Those Furbies were surprisingly fun to play with!
that little girl doll just caught me off guard, anyway, great video! im definitely gonna try this myself~
Give it a try! If I can do it three times, anyone can do it once!
Great job ! Happy for you !
Karen Fisher my turkey is a Thanksgiving decoration :D
OMGOSH I almost died when you opened the box of beanie babies and fu
rbies! BAHAHA! Awesome.
are those two items (one orange and one is like blue green) are they soaps? may I ask? You may throw them in your washing machine to clean your sensitive clothes and surely they will smell good as well as your doing the fabric good and in tip top shape
Yes, those gem shaped things were soaps, and I did find a way to use them up quickly. I cut them up and put them in a soap dispenser with water. I realize it might not count to some as getting rid of them, since I used it up, but I figured it was better than throwing them away.
im going to try this and im excited for the end result
Try it! It's incredible.
Goodwill or Salvation Army wit take the stuff animals and toys. I want the panda bear beanie baby! Lol
I would of love those amc gift cards! lol I love it when I receive gift cards rather than other gifts I may not like.. lol. I was dying for all of those beanie babies and toys for my classrooms little store lol
I too prefer gift cards over trinkets that I'll never use. I know it's kind of a polarizing topic, but that's where I fall.
Is that tv stand from ikea? I'm seem to have the exact same one in front of me in white but we got ours quite recently
Yep! It's actually in our shed currently as we've been living without a TV in the living room, but we've had it for years and it's still alive!
Great video, as always!
Everything you said "remember that" I was like yes! Haha that doll was scary. My mom still has a ton of my beanie babies...remember we were supposed to be millionaires off those lol
lololol, yep, nope, not happening. I did have a few little pangs of nostalgia, but I didn't need any of it.
Love it!
