  • @JackCooper243
    @JackCooper243 หลายเดือนก่อน +39

    I’ve been thinking about this for years now but I’ve narrowed it down to a few things some that I haven’t seen people mention before
    UK rap in general has become secularised for lack of a better word. Years ago UK rap was London Rap. Everybody in the country looked to London for music but now there’s scenes all over the country. People in Liverpool are choosing to look for and listen to Scouse artists instead of London artists. Same thing is happening in Manny and to a lesser extent Brum. The viewership is split. We’re seeing cases now where London artists who have been seen as ‘mainstream’ are getting less views than local rappers in other cities.
    The music also hasn’t evolved. Easiest way to compare is looking at UK Drill vs NY Drill. NY drill starting using UK beats then incorporated Jersey beats later down the line which helped modernise its sound and put NY rappers on. The production in UK tracks really hasn’t evolved much in the past few years and people are getting bored of the sound. What makes it worse is these rappers tryna tell us that we have to support them. Why should we support artists that make music we don’t wanna listen too?
    Another thing whether people wanna admit it or not the fact is that UK rap’s popularity is largely based on the White British population’s interest. Every mainstream UK rap song apart from maybe Body blew up because White British people embraced it. Now for some reason they are choosing not to consume new music. Maybe because of the secularisation of UK music that I just mentioned.
    One more thing. Rappers need to be cool. That’s part of the whole image and I don’t think people see the roadman image as cool anymore.
    UK rap doesn’t just need new rappers. It needs an entirely new face and sound.

      somewhat true but you're also forgetting people are getting older too, people will change the type of the music they listen to as they age, the young kids that could watch and listen to a drill song over and over again cant really do that now , now the new young kids are listening to something else

    I think something needs to definitely be said about how drill music has a lack of playability because of the violent lyricism when it comes to radioplay. For those that don't know, radio stations don't allow explicit lyrics. Most UK genres that have come up in the past, specifically, jungle, acid house and garage managed to properly pop off because of their lack of violent lyricism, however comparing these genres to UKDrill often not such a good idea because of their lack of rapping etc.
    However, if you compare UKDrill to Grime, I believe the key difference and why, with the absence of Drill, grime is resurging right now is because big artists like JME, Dizzee Rascal and Skepta deliberately made songs with limited swearing FOR radioplay that could spread the genre.
    With the lyrical content of drill and its connection with gang culture, it's simply not viable for radio stations such as Radio 1, which attracts millions of listeners each week. This is unfortunate because UKDrill is an accurate representation of what life is like on the streets of the uk, and many talented rappers who I've met as a musician going to community projects to make music have unfortunately gone back to trapping and aren't even trying to use their talent anymore because there "isn't a market for that"
    You could argue that these rappers aren't good and should adapt, but I'd return your argument with if it was 2019 and not 2024 these artists would of been around at the right time, and would of got plays.

    • @taaltheeruptor526
      @taaltheeruptor526 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Furthermore, I believe right now the state of UK rap music is in what I like to call "the genreless lull" with rappers knowing they can't take drill much further but also knowing that unless they hop on American style genres (lancey, Len, fimi) or fall back on older UK genres such as grime they aren't gonna get many streams.
      An example of this would be Unknown T, who's started rapping on hoodtrap beats and grime beats at cyphers (not saying this is bad, as I like his new direction).
      Basically what we need is a new genre of UK rap music to emerge and for other artists to hop on it after the pioneer. Once that happens rap will top the UK charts again, But until then rappers are unfortunately gonna struggle.
      If you see yourself as a talented UK rapper my number one piece of advice to you as a student of music would be:
      MAKE SOMETHING NEW!

    UK Drill's death is overdue but the question now is what does it evolve into? I think something a bit more up-tempo and "happy" but would be interesting to get your thoughts
    It has followed the same formula as all that came before it.
    Grime (2003 - 2015) had the same rise and fall. As did UK Garage (1995 - 2003). The moment where it gets the mainstream spotlight consistently is where it peaks. It will never reach that peak again. Drill isn't even as diverse a genre as the other two and the only reason it has been relevant for so long was because of how social media evolved during 2016-2024

    • @kwazz_1208
      @kwazz_1208 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      the problem with drill is that it started in the streets, and police started trying to supress it so people started making drill into a comercial genre. The problem with that is new comercialised genres die quickly and thats what happened to drill

    • @Assassin70700
      @Assassin70700 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @kwazz_1208 you could also make the same argument to an extent for Grime. I imagine that with the same amount of social media presence back during them days, you would have also had the scene somewhat locked off as well. Again, not to the same extent as is the case for UK Drill, for quite a few reasons.
      You are also right about the timeline of UK Drill, although I think you can apply the same trend to any trend that has come and gone.
      Unfortunately, money and the mainstream will eventually ruin anything it touches and there will always be those that do decide to go down that route. I don't blame them though. A five, six or maybe even seven figure fee, your tune being played on platforms like Capital FM and the tune charting, amongst many other things are too good to resist for them

    • @Adamag745
      @Adamag745 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    • @Assassin70700
      @Assassin70700 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@Adamag745 I definitely agree. It needs to be the people that do this and not industry. We desperately need something new in the UK.
      The key though is for it not to be a beg of something that is happening elsewhere. Remember when they tried to make UK Rap a thing, but noone outside of the UK took it seriously because people thought that the music sounded like a bad knock-off of US Rap?
      It needs to be something that you can say definitively that it was created in the UK, because them times did not paint us in a good light

    Nemzzz and that style of drill should just be referred to as TikTok Drill the way its commercialised. The same way trap music, when X, Lil Pump, Ski Mask the Slump God were referred to as SoundCloud Trap when their lyricism weren’t really reflecting Trap music, it was more the beats were borrowed and made more alternative and just became its own distinct genre.

    Everyone you mentioned is signed to a major label. Makes sense the labels want them to make more commercial friendly music even if that’s not what made them famous. I’m not from the UK but I’ve heard about the strict guidelines you guys have over there. Like the laws that got digga d and 1011 caught up years back forcing them to censor their music and change their group name. And I’m glad that you mentioned Loski, he’s a prime example of why labels want their rappers to stay away from crazy lyrics.

    Yeah, not only was it too much exposure, but also due to 2 gangs that were beefing a bit too much knifing, which the UK police then decides to step in and heavily regulate and dictate UK Grime/Drill. That to me is also a contributing factor here, because after that crackdown post UK drill artists had to be more careful with sneak disses and subs to gangs, which forced them to go into other hip hop genres and borrow more heavily from R&B type melodies.

      Cench is drill going full circle. He’s part of the culture but in tandem commercial enough that 8-10 year olds can play his music without swearing. Understand that no one is competition to him the best raw talent in drill is Digga and Cench blows his talent out of the water through brand and marketing. You can’t compete with a finished product like him.

    Well the original Homerton B was never released when Unknown T changed it that was already the beginning of the end. Compare Homerton B (commercialised version) compared to Bop with Smoke. From 2019 when y. OFB got popular drill had already turned kinda pop sounding. Even until a couple years ago there were still songs with that original sound but most were exclusives but never released. The other thing is during the same period Afroswing was very, very popular and Drill actually had to wait for that to die out to go fully mainstream. Afroswing didn't last very long and reached it's zenith in 2018.

    I think drill went dead when songs like Body went mainstream. When a song becomes a radio hit on repeat it sort of becomes boring. As a former visual artist, i can say that most UK drill is the same. When i was editing, you can notice that there's nothing new coming in terms of the sound, what's being said etc i feel like drill is always about the same thing just said on a different beat. This is why people are moving away from it
