    Fantastic video, 2016 XC60 under warranty engine management light on, EGR issue, took back to dealer who said valve not fully opening, reset, fast forward 6 weeks engine management light back on, same fault code EGR valve, found this video and thought Id give it a go, I found you can get to that spring from the front without having to remove the EGR, just remove some hoses and pull of the plastic cover, sprayed some WD40 and resent codes, no fault codes now after 500+ miles and numerous starts. Just shows a simple fix. Was booked into Volvo again who tried to tell me they will charge for diagnostic, and see if covered under warranty blah blah blah. wriggle wriggle out of responsibility as usual. So satisfying to cancel appointment saying its been sorted. Thanks great video saved me time and money knowing Volvo dealerships.

    I have a 2016 V40 D4 which probably has the same engine. I’d like to give the EGR a clean as more of a preventative measure - could you do a video on just how to remove and clean it all?

    The exact same thing happened to me, 2019 Volvo. Took it back to dealer twice and they couldn’t find what’s wrong with it. The dealer now failed MOT and is charging me £1.3k to change EGR, no details on what’s wrong with it or whether they tried cleaning. Will try this and hope it sorts it

    Well done Shawn. I know what you mean when you said every one knows you. I would prefer to fix things myself as well

    My 2014 XC60 D4 had new upgraded EGR valve in February EML came on a week ago sent to volvo they said they have upgraded cooling pipes as well now waiting for phone call when parts are in hopefully next week. I haven't had to pay a penny as car has full VSH car only done 45000 miles. Great service from Volvo even gave us a new XC60 as courtesy car from volvo assist
    I would find out if you have modified EGR valve for sure

    Shawn you genius. Is the EGR an easy removal or is it tricky? I’m ok ish with mechanics and am tempted to remove and clean.

    Could you not just put a blanking plate on to save any issues in the future, also stops dirty exhaust going back through your engine?

  • @davebgsi

    Can you clean it up without removing it from the vehicle?

    How long did it take you to get the ECR off? I think I have the same issue with my XC60 D4 2015

    This EGR valve costs 500 eur and 190 eur for replacement. Nice job. As for me, I paid 500 on top

    Hi, I bought a 2014 xc60 in 2018 I'm now having this issue, bought tha car as being a single mom with 2 boys racing bikes needed reliability and more space , this is going to be an expensive fix here in rep of Ireland replacing the egr valve mechanic is talking €6-700, which I wont be able to do all that often , going by your video it doesnt need replacing, just cleaning out will rectify the issue?

      @ShawnCharles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kerry steadman yes , the butterfly valve was just sticking with slight rust behind a plastic cover , any decent mechanic should be able to remove the unit and clean it up and get it working perfectly for you , good luck .

    Why grease, it will get hot there . Grease will done nothing once engine gets hot and warm exhaust passes thru egr. Maybe you need some high temperature grease

    Hi shawn,
    Can you make a guide how to replace the EGR step by step on this model. I have the same car and the same EGR problem.

    • @ShawnCharles
      @ShawnCharles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry , I can’t do that as the car is in daily use now , but if I get chance to do a similar job , I’ll post a video, thanks for the interest 😎😎😁😁

      Shawn, my D4 XC60 stutters on cold start. I’m convinced it’s the EGR. I echo what Nicklas said however if you can’t post said video can you advise where the EGR is located and whether taking it out was a big job? Thanks

      @@lewisswan3299 did you sort yours out? Mine has just started doing it too ☹️

    • @lewisswan3299
      @lewisswan3299 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chris329a I did yes. Volvo initially replaced the engine under warranty (yes you heard right!) but after a few months did it again when out of warranty. Did a load of research, decided it was the EGR, had long conversations with Volvo (as out of warranty), replaced by them and fine ever since. Mine had a specific issue in that the mechanism would stick (hence the jump). I suspect this would be an issue EGR wise for most Volvo 2016 D4 due to coolant related issues. Get the EGR replaced, brand new genuine and check your Volvo has undergone a coolant fix (some models the coolant was working too well and part of the vehicle not able to regenerate….. hope this makes sense. @@lewisswan3299 Thanks for the reply. Mine is a 2015 d4 and had the coolant fix by the looks of it and also the intake recall. I checked the egr is moving both physically and with an obd2 reader and it's moving. I checked the MAP and its caked up so I cleaned it and it looked broken so tested it and it is. I've got a replacement on the way but I'm really hoping it is that as it matches the symptoms perfectly. Mine slightly stutters when cold and light throttle.

    I have a 2016 Volvo v40. I replaced the EGR on a Volvo service 14,000 miles ago. Today error P04D9 appeared. I'm going to do a remap and remove the EGR.

    I had my egr removed because i couldnt afford to replace it. Now i have engine light on again, this time its an o2 sensor. I feel there is an underlying problem and these are the symptoms of that problem which all started when i got the recall done by volvo 3 years ago. Ever since that day i have burning oil smell every now and again and have to top up oil every month. Now my digital dip stick tells me its 3/4 full no matter how much you put in. Its just a mess. Has anyone gone through this that can tell me the source of the problem it wasnt the egr that was just a symptom and im scared oil and coolant are mixing in my exhaust system
