Technically he didn't have that much plot armor, toothless is aerodynamic which meant that as long as he got in the right position, he would fall faster than hiccup, allowing him to catch up, he then wrapped around hiccup, presumably tried to lessen the fall by flapping his wings and finally when near the ground closed them covering hiccup for even more protection, during this fast decisions and swings is what causes hiccup to lose his leg, unless you speak of plot armor as in his bad luck to find all the shit he did in the first place since plot armor, in fact, is also the name when a character is fucked up beyond what they normally would have been by the plot

Like the fight with toothless against the alpha in the second one at the end, and the fight with grimal in the third, as well as a reaction video where they react to toothless and the lightfury.
