But he continued to state up until his death that he did not regret his work on the bombs, asserting the exact opposite.
I think the movie just going to deal with the psychology of a man who built a world-ender weapon. It could get very psychological, very spiritual, very dark. And a detonation scene will be used as symbolism for Opp's mental breakdown. Either way, I hope this is Nolan's Magnus Opus.

If Norway hadn't sunk a ferry full of heavy water, Hitler might have beaten the USA to it. The Trinity test was only TWO MONTHS after Germany's surrender, and everybody knew that they weren't the only ones to have been trying. The race for nuclear weapons was mostly a race for the first blast of power. That period where one person has nukes and no one else does means you can, if so inclined, do almost anything you want. The USA didn't use its nukes well at all, especially at first, but Stalin had made it pretty clear that HE would have liked to have France, and letting him, or anyone else with expansionist ambitions, have that grace period where no one else can stop you didn't seem like a great alternative. With that as the background, even if you're horrified and disgusted by the thing you made and you wish it could never exist at all, making sure it went to the most responsible (or at least the LEAST IRresponsible) person may be the best choice you could have made. And, when asked later, you might remember how much you hate that thing, throw your morals on the altar one more time, and say "yes, I would do it again." Tl;dr: Honestly pretty understandable. Also I should never comment about someone else's motivations and thoughts while I'm half asleep; it seems to have turned into purple prose at some point. Sorry about that.

The atomic explosion in this is reportedly almost entirely CGI-free. Not sure how they did it without dropping an actual A-bomb but they'll undoubtedly release a BTS on it.
Replicating what a nuclear explosion would look like would be fairly easy by just igniting a couple HHO(Oxy-hydrogen gas.) balloons (possibly underwater)and film it a 100,000 fps. That would give similar visuals as to the flames and shockwave but, im curious on how it was filmed to appear on land as well as the scale of of it.
I’m a huge physics nerd and know the stories of so many scientists who were there, especially Richard Feynman. The cast of characters they have listed on IMDb gives me hope they’re focusing on the right stuff, but really a Chernobyl style mini series would be far better. Crossing my fingers this’ll be great!
I am also a physics type person and I am hopeful you are both right. More than that, I hope this movie brings to light something that a vast majority of youth in today's society don't even know about or care that exists, which is a good thing that we sort of evolved away from this "danger" and a tragic thing that we are all now living with the possibility of this "danger" happening to us. My niece and nephew are both graduating high school this year (one is graduating early) and the only reason they said they knew about Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project was because my niece chose to do a presentation about the bombs dropped in WWII. Even if this film falls flat (and I, along with both of you hope it does not), but even if it falls flat I am hopeful that the "spetacle" of what it is trying to do will draw young audiences across the globe to watch it, which in turn, may educate them and scare the shit out of them; and could potentially bring some change to the world. I'm getting older and will turn 50 in March and have lived under the specter of nuclear war and practiced "duck amd cover" drill from old projector films shown to us in elementary school, which were provided by the Civil Defense Department. This may be the most important time in the modern era to release this type of movie. I'll be watching it and already plan to buy the tickets and refreshments to take my niece and nephew to see it. Yes, I know it's a "low key" 🙄 (hate those types of terms) bribe, but if it captivates their interest, then maybe they will learn something and be better off for it without ever realizing it.
As a giant physics nerd I can't wait for this movie! I still need to catch up some more Nolan films but he managed to make Interstellar give people a better understanding of space flight and relativity without it being overly expositional. And you know, a almost realistic Batman.
Nolan researched with Kip Thorne who won the Nobel Prize in Physics and also was a co-producer on the movie Interstellar for years before they went into production to make sure everything they put into the movie was scientifically proven and accurate. Nolan is extremely meticulous in his process before coming out with a film. He never misses and I’m sure he won’t miss with this either
I recommend reading “American Prometheus”before seeing this. The movie is based off the book. It’s a very good biography of Oppenheimer. I read it 3 times, it’s so crazy.
Tenet and Oppenheimer are connected, whether or not it’s directly. Tenet explores a 007ish sci-fi experience with minimum character, and Oppenheimer is the direct opposite being most likely a character driven decades spanning biopic.
There are interesting parallels between Oppenheimer and Turing; also in the aftermath of the war where both men were humiliated and their loyalty questioned by their respective governments.
In my opinion, Oppenheimer's creation of the atomic bomb has never been the most terrifying invention to be created but rather the idea that every human being born or that exist potentially is a weapon of mass destruction alone is what's truly chilling to me.
It was kinda character driven, but most facts about the characters were intentionally left out, so the audience can implement their own thoughts and ideas into that. Seems like many people don't like that, but Nolan has 10/10 archived what he wanted, so Tenet is a masterpiece exactly like his movies before

I watched this trailer this morning and 2 of my kids (9 and 11yo) were in the room and started to watch it with me. Once it was over they asked what it was all about and I used it as a moment to tell my kids about one of the worst things we (USA) ever did by killing tens of thousands of people in Japan in the blink of an eye, twice. They asked if I was telling the truth or exaggerating and I pulled up videos of the aftermath of Hiroshima to show the entire city flattened and burnt and how people have been using the threat of those happening again ever since. I said to them that their grandparents used to have drills in school to hide from one of those bombs, but how useless those would be for a bomb like that, but they don't do that now, instead they do Active Shooter drills in school.
Americans are maddening with their historical ignorance. No, in fact, it wasn't the worse thing you ever did. And spoiler alert, Clarus, you could be trusted with it. I am a pacifist and not an American, nor pro-American, and yet I know that those 2 bombs kept millions of more people from dying in the worst war in human history. Japan was nowhere near to surrendering and were willing to sacrifice millions more of their own people and hundreds of thousands of allied soldiers in a mainland attack. The Nazis and Soviets were right on your heels in developing their own nuclear bomb. We can all only imagine what would have happened then and in the decades since if they had gotten there first. You want to teach your kids some history? Try context. Try understanding a little more about that war before you drop the bomb on your children themselves that their country apparently annihilated the Japanese for no good reason. Jesus.

The nazis were beaten without nuclear weapons and Germany surrendered by May of ‘45 so they weren’t just about to bomb us. Their nuclear program wasn’t as viable and fell apart with allied victories detaining their scientists. The Soviets got their program of course and we all got the Cold War. The bombs were dropped on Japan in August of ‘45. Japan was on the road to defeat without dropping those 2 bombs but they definitely escalated their surrender and prevented a bloodbath on Kyushu if we would have landed instead. Nothing in war is a win, thousands would have died either way, non-combatant deaths outnumbered combatants much more, that is true. However, dropping 2 nuclear bombs and destroying entire cities, 200k+ (120k or so immediately and thousands more to radiation sicknesses) of innocent men, women and children is, in my opinion, a horrendous thing to do. China had a far higher price paid in that theater, in terms of numbers killed, than anyone by that point, so it could be argued that those bombs stopped that as well, but it doesn’t erase the choice to kill all those innocent non-combatants in Hiroshima and Nagasaki or make if less bad.
Oppenheimer is not an action film. There should really no action. Not sure what you were expecting but this is the story of the creation of the first atomic bomb. The only action there could be is post creation or the spy thriller aspect that did not involve the Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer is going to be about the people that created it. If he works in something else it would be more fiction. This film should end with the phrase "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds..." fade to black.
The comment “spoiler alert: you cant be trusted” seems to ignore the nuance that this movie is going for. When nuclear weapons were being developed, three major powers were competing to be the first. If the Nazis or Soviets had made nukes first, would you feel safer than if the Americans built it? That’s why Oppenheimer is so terrified in this trailer, succeeding means a new method of death, failing would’ve subjugated the world to tyranny.

Oppenheimer never had a "mental breakdown". He openly stated he'd create the bomb all over again even with all the hindsight he had after the war.

Oppenheimer is not an action film. There should really no action. Not sure what you were expecting but this is the story of the creation of the first atomic bomb. The only action there could be is post creation or the spy thriller aspect that did not involve the Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer is going to be about the people that created it. If he works in something else it would be more fiction. This film should end with the phrase "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds..." fade to black.

The comment “spoiler alert: you cant be trusted” seems to ignore the nuance that this movie is going for. When nuclear weapons were being developed, three major powers were competing to be the first. If the Nazis or Soviets had made nukes first, would you feel safer than if the Americans built it? That’s why Oppenheimer is so terrified in this trailer, succeeding means a new method of death, failing would’ve subjugated the world to tyranny.

I thought they might be a couple but nothing they ever said indicated that including their body language, words, etc. So I thought it might be pretentious and ignorant to just assume so I thought I would just ask them once directly and clear the confusion lol.
