it was really cool i did it and you guys need to know 2 things before making it : 1. choose the best place to make it cause it will take too much oil 2. it will last around 5 min and then it will slow down and after an hour the movements are so slow and to make it like the 1st min add more vinegar :DD good luck with it
If you want to make this last for a long time, instead of using baking soda and vinegar to make the food coloring go up and down, put a small hole near the bottom and attach on a small plastic tube. Put silicone or hot glue around the base of the tube so that no oil leaks out. Put an electric air pump at the other end of the tube and connect a battery and on/off switch to it. When you turn it on, air will flow through the tube into the bottom of the jar, and push the food coloring to the top. The air will escape through the top of the jar and the food coloring will go down again. The lava lamp will last until you run out of batterys (which could take months depending on the sise if the battery and electric pump) compared to the baking soda and vinegar method which will only last 5 minutes.
This is a really neat and visual task to get kids excited about basic chemistry, thanks for the video, can't wait to see my nephews face when he makes this!
