I like these kind of how to: competitive-style videos, andI feel like team building is the biggest obstacle for new players. you should make a series like this
Ive got the habit of spectating many matches and just sitting back while predicting both sides while the turns go by. I think its helped with my general prediction skills.
I’d also like to add a 5th category for good leads: Mons that can specifically counter common and problematic leads For example, Booster Energy Iron Crown can put pressure on lead Glimmora and Ribombee and can even eliminate them or force a switch/early tera and prevent them from getting their hazards in place and puts them in a less than ideal situation. It can also run thunderbolt to catch Pelliper by surprise and eliminating rain for the rest of the game
Very informative video! Another thing I’ve noticed is that people very often put their lead pokemon on the first slot of their team. Although very trivial, it’s such a common occurrence that I think is worth considering
I’m not sure if I missed them in the video, but traditionally there are also the concepts of Anti-Leads, or mons that grab insane momentum after a single turn of setup (such as DDance Gyara in DPP OU). They’re usually sent in as a means of offense to take advantage of an opponent’s Turn 1 rocks, or slow-paced lead that cannot deal with Substitute/immediate setup.
I'm not familiar with this term to be honest-- maybe this was a thing in past generations moreso than current ones. The only time I ever seen turn 1 setup work well is when your opponent has a poorly built team, or in rare cases in which a certain set just happens to counter the opponent very well. I certainly am not aware of any immediate setup strategies being effective on a large scale, but if you can think of any definitely let me know! :]
@@pinkacross2042 I did a bit more digging and my example with Gen 4 OU Gyara was not just for DDance, but for Taunt as well! Taunt, strong Knock Off in later gens, SD, and more also apply to this concept, though it probably is a term that’s mostly old school. In any case, I think there are some underrated anti-leads personally, especially Kyurem since it outruns both Glim and Lando which are common leads in and of themselves, and the loaded dice mixed set can DD on Slowking as an example. There’s probably a better one out there, but this is the first one that comes to mind
Anti-leads were a thing before team preview, where, instead of having one dedicated lead Pokémon that does something like set spikes or screens and immediately die, you had one Pokémon dedicated to countering the most common lead Pokémon. This concept doesn’t really apply anymore with team preview because dedicated leads are uncommon and generally a bad idea (even most HO teams will vary their leads depending on the opponent’s team).
When I’m playing Natdex and using scarf Urshifu, I lead that pretty much every game. I mean it outspeeds pretty much every reasonable natdex lead other than opposing scarf urshifu, it can uturn into something else like landorus-t or glowking if it needs to, it can surging strikes gliscor leads, it can surging strikes past random sash leads, it can surging strikes and ohko a lot of things… I definitely lead it way too often lol. When I don’t have scarf urshifu I usually just lead landorus-t for uturn/intimidate/hazards. I should probably actually consider the other team more often but the only time I do that is when it’s a weather team (lead slowking if I have it to offset their weather lead and prevent them from pivoting/switching into weather setter turn 1).
Falling into a habit of always leading with whatever is easiest is very common, I catch myself doing it sometimes as well. Probably Urshi IS the right lead a lot of the time, but catching the times when it isn't could be a big deal.
Speaking of making lead Pokemon, I usually have a Pokemon that can lead the game and set up Stealth Rock ASAP. And if there is another hazard setter, I let it Taunt them before it can do anything. I even use Azelf, Aerodactyl and sometimes Heatran since all of them can put up Stealth Rock ASAP. Although Azelf also has access to Magic Coat too.
Something I think would be cool is if there were lead puzzles people could do as exercise to get build that skill similar to how there are daily chess puzzles.
This is a fun idea, but mixing up your lead decisions is essential as well! If there was a tried and true "correct" way to pick a lead every single time, then your opponent could simply use that to see what you're going to lead with, and then counterlead you.
Right that makes sense, then the answer to the puzzles wouldn’t be one Pokémon, you’d probably have to have a ranked choice answer section or something
One thing I noticed about my hyper offense teams that I make is that I pretty much always lead my hazard setter. Are there any play styles that May dictate what leads you typically are going to go for? Or am I just building my teams improperly
Certainly, Hyper Offense often has a dedicated lead that is the correct option in many matchups. Still, the key is identifying the times when you DON'T go with the obvious lead, typically when your opponent has a particularly strong response to your dedicated lead.
True, but it's a terrible SR setter. Vulnerable to almost every removal pokemon in the tier. And generally Gambit without SD 3 attacks is just a much worse pokemon.
