China had twice beaten Malaysia for the Thomas Cup in 1988 at KL and the in 1990 at Tokyo but this time around with ferocious and partisan support from Malaysian fans China were dethroned and sent packing. It was Rashid Sidek who set the momentum going and the impetus for Malaysia to upset China with his brilliant three sets win over 1985 All England champion Zhao Jian Hua.
It had not looked good when Malaysia had suffered a shock 3-2 defeat to South Korea in a group match and because of this defeat it had condemned the home team to playing favourites and defending champions China in the semifinals.The Indonesians on the other hand had the easiest task of facing South Korea in the other semifinal. But then the spirit of the Malaysians had been uplifted followed a morale boosting 5-0 win over Denmark.It was this crushing defeat of the Danes that the stage was set for a semifinal showdown with mighty China who had the mercurial Zhao Jian Hua. And Jian Hua and Rashid Sidek fought out a closed match with Rashid prevailing by 15-12 in the rubber set. But China tied the score at 1-1 winning the second singles. So it was left for Malaysia to win the next two doubles ties which the home team did admirably in three games. The Sidek duo of Jalaini and Razif had to dig out their reserves to tame their nemesises Tian Bingyi and Li Yongbo 15-5,10-15 and 15-5 to put Malaysia 2-1 up. Then Cheah Soon Kit and Soo Beng Kiang did not disappoint with an emphatic 15-9,18-14 victory Huang Zhan Zhong and Zheng Yu Min. And for the first time since their 3-2 defeat to Indonesia in the 1984 Thomas Cup final China had to concede defeat.
