    Just played my UHQR all the way through. I’m blown away. This album is more hallucinatory than Axis when you can hear everything so good. The song Are You Experienced was by far the most mind blowing thing. It’s a revelation on this album. The hard right panning of the strummed guitar parts sounds almost out of phase and the rest of the guitar parts are swept and panned left right, up-down. It’s crazy. During the solo part the continued strumming rhythm parts on the right are very apparent now. The song, the mix, everything is pure genius. As is the rest of this great album. Best $150 I ever spent.

      Hi Rick, I'm so happy that you appreciate this incredible reissue. To me there was no contest, this is the one! It's truly is mind blowing how much better it is than the Marino, and it should be a significant step up for the premium price. There have been a few of these uber priced records that left me wanting, but not this one. Totally worth it and you don't need a super high end system to hear the difference. I can't wait til we hopefully get Electric Ladyland. That is going to be killer!

    I can actually remember my dad coming home with this lp probably early 69 here in Canada, his copy is the original steamboat Reprise and as a kid I was listening to it with him and was totally grooving to the psychadelic music. Experienced is my favorite lp of all time along with Second Winter, Let It Bleed, Beggars Banquet, Steppenwolf The Second, Yer Album (James Gang) Zep 2, Beck Ola and Abbey Road. What an era eh!

I was shocked how much clean, real detail they mined from the tapes. Jimi's vocals never sounded better. Hey Joe and Wind Cries Mary were magical!... you're so right. Great video.

    Nice review! Just ordered this UHQR yesterday. I’ve heard and own many different eras of this album. I have two from ‘69 and ‘71 and even they sound different from each other. On one the cymbals are up somewhat in the mix and sharper, the other the cymbals are slightly less present and warmer yet still crisp. On the whole, they both are close on balance and sound excellent. My 2010 and 2014 Marino cuts, oh Lord, they sound weightier, less congested and quite airy and detailed. They may or may not be the most accurate to the original pressings but I would say NO sins were committed getting the best possible sounds while staying reasonably faithful to the master tape. Just my opinion here. I also have the Grundman SACD of AYE but can only compare the CD layer to my original albums. The mastering on that version sounds very close to what’s on the older LPs IMO.
    Can’t wait to drop the Koetsu on the new UHQR

I bought it on CD as well; I used to play it in class with my high school seniors when we were all working together on project work and they loved it. Some music never dies. Great review. I subscribed right away. Just a couple questions. What did you think of the bass level on it? On my system the bass is very powerful...I had to turn the bass all the way down. Also what do you mean by "edge"? Thanks.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thank you for watching and subscribing! I've always thought previous releases of this album were lacking a good bass response, so I found that very welcome. I didn't find it overblown or too much on my system, though I do tend to adjust my sub if it needs a touch up or down. I don't recall having to do any adjustment from my normal levels on the UHQR. So it may be system or room dependent. As far as the word edge, I used it to describe what I hear as a veer forward treble on the Marino cut. The UHQR didn't have that, and is rather smoother, yet clear and detailed. I really feel it's beautifully balanced overall and my preference. May I ask did you have any previous editions of the album before the UHQR? Thanks again for your comment, always great to have another perspective!

    I did not know the recording super well prior to purchasing the boxset. The first track caught me off guard because I heard Jimi's voice hard panned to the right channel. I thought something was wrong but I think that must be the way the recording was mixed. All the other tracks the vocals are centered and not so trippy. The vinyl is quiet and flat and the box looks as deluxe as a Louie Vuitton bag. I am happy to have it and can't wait for the next one.

      @@ThePressingMatters that DOES help! 😁 I normally don't follow too many reviewers for audio, basically Thomas & Stereo because you gotta love that guy! And Jay primarily. What caused me also to choose you is because your title involves the actual pressing, which is vital and (including the mastering of course) is pretty much why you want to hear and see these comparisons! I took a bit of a chance because I've read/heard various thoughts about this pressing, and I am most definitely NOT the kind of guy to be spending over $100 on albums except very rarely. Since this is indeed an important one, I really wanted to get a LOT of input on this pressing, especially as compared to the 2010 pressing. So, I kind of compromised and ordered it through Amazon Prime, although they don't have any in stock now. So, I'm taking a chance that they may not get any more, but at least through Prime I am fully covered if anything is wrong with the album 😊
      In reading many comments on the Steve Hoffman Forums, where many there do indeed have very good systems and informed opinions about things, I got kind of a varied response. Nothing bad, just some who felt maybe the 2010 pressing and this one weren't that different, and I do already have that one. But, with Steve West a little bit and you more so, I really got the genuine impression that probably on my system I would be able to hear the difference.
      (my apologies for the long post, sorry...) My system is nothing super expensive or esoteric, but it is rather unique, especially with the speaker design. I was VERY fortunate to have a good friend who was a brilliant stereo designer. He ever set up high end audio shows at the Debbie Reynolds hotel in Vegas for a few years. He designed these beautiful tall line arrays with multiple ribbons and maybe with a fancy granite facing, and he'd go to Japan and sell the suckers for like $20,000!
      He helped me design my system and he also was able to provide a lot of drivers (some of his design) and raw wire and components that I otherwise would never be able to afford the commercial equivalent. So, I was VERY fortunate! I'd post a link to pictures of my system and collection, but usually TH-cam automatically removes posts with links in it. My speakers are also tall multi-driver open baffle dipole line-arrays, but with conventional drivers (13/side) and 2-15" open baffle dipole woofers (which my friend Kenny Mavrick designed) A newly acquired used Ayon Orion II tube integrated amp drives the two towers and a Crown that is bridged drives the two woofers which are wired in parallel @ 4 ohms. And, if I may say, with the tall dipole line arrays and multiple smaller drivers, the transients are SUPER fast and I feel that they create an unusually large image and soundstage.
      I look forward to checking out your other videos and such, and also to whatever you may have upcoming soon!
      Cheers!
      Jaime.

      @ThePressingMatters 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@latheofheaven Great comment Jaime! I know it is a lot of money and I wouldn't recommend it if it were not an absolute favorite. On your system you'll definitely hear the difference, no question. My basic impression was that of a more refined sound vs the Marino. The Marino seemed a bit more visceral at first but on my system became a bit farigung. It does have more bass but the UHQR is a much better listen for me, it holds together at high volume and never gets aggressive where it's not supposed to. I think you'll love it.

    I just bought the “authorized” remaster of this album a few days before this was announced! I do like the QRP pressing I got, but I do feel the actual recording of the album is not “audiophile” quality. Probably having to do with the time, and the amount of time spent on the recording, mixing, and initial mastering of the final tape. I do feel a bit of FOMO in that I got my copy days before this was announced, and decided to pass. Taking this one on the chin as I don’t feel like paying $125 after buying a copy a few days prior.

      You know, these differences are there for sure but when there's such excellent standard remastering as the one you have, there's not really much reason to chase these super lux pressings. It might be worth it for an absolute favorite, but it's really something one should be selective about. As you said this recording is not audiophile by any means, so all the extra care can only go so far. You've got a great one that is just fine for most anyone.

    My copy was unfortunately badly warped, shaped like a bowl. Unfortunately, since I live in Sweden, Acoustic Sounds will only exchange my defect product if I place another order worth of 50 usd plus shipping. A bit odd policy I think. I could also send the box back, at my own expense, to get a refund. Bummed!

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so sorry to hear that. I know it's almost impossible to resolve these issues from abroad, but perhaps you could have them check the replacement to insure its defect free and just find something you wanted to order anyway. Not condoning this policy, by any means but you deserve a flat defect free copy. I suppose you'll have to destroy the other copy before they'll ship a replacement.

    As it seems, your gatefold sleeve is damaged in the middle inside, when it was opened first time. right? This should not happen for this price.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does look like that in the video, and I'll check it when I get home, but that would not be acceptable and would require replacement.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think what happened is when I first examined the package I may not have opened the gatefold completely, so in going through the review, my thought is that it was perfect, when in reality it was pasted too tight and I must have opened it further without realizing it split. Or it came that way and I somehow missed it. Kind of a mystery because I'm very picky about such things. At any rate, a replacement was ordered easily.

It sounds great for 27 Euros i paid. 199 Euros for one Record in this ugly superfluous box, I do not need. For this price i get 5 Records from the Tone Poets Serie, a great audiophile Series.
