It's nice that when you dig your trench, you don't hit any rocks that are in the ground. My yard is like wall to wall rocks inches below the surface. You can't dig a nice big hole or a trench without hitting boulders, which then turns into really heavy and difficult labor. I landscaped my entire yard in 20 years and found so many rocks below the surface that I was able to border my property with them and I am still not done. For every bush, tree or shrub I planted, I had to work 10X as hard to first remove all the rocks I hit when digging a small hole, but I created cottage gardens with every type of species of plantings for my zone on over 2 acres. When people see this these they think these plants just grew there by themselves and they never realize all of the hard work that went into it. That is why I can appreciate any size garden because I know what it takes and how much work goes into it. Do it while you are young and pace yourself. It is worth it.

Most all the properties around me hire landscape companies, and, most do not have gardens, or lawns, or trees. Not so here. The fellow's engineering skills, and strength, certainly contributed to the good construction of these walls. I know, because I have tried, that unless you can stockpile unearthed rocks somewhere, and can devote most of your life to sorting sizes, and waiting until you have sufficient rocks, in my experience, a pile of rocks looks like a pile or rocks. --Your fences and gardens must be wonderful.

Our soil is nothing but those rocks. Top soil is about an unch thick and then you hit the rock. I hired a backhoe to dig trenches for the first beds, now I just build them on top out of leaves a horse manure. I want to use part of the rocks, that's why I'm here, but I want to do more of a permanent walls with cement. Too bad that our town's regulations don't allow rock fence. My dream is to have a walled in garden, but not where we are, I guess.
I absolutely love the edging yoi have here! It looks great!

I have a lot of rocks I’ve found in my yard. I can’t wait to recreate this in my own design! Loved the content!!

I'm building my own garden rock wall and this video was perfect to show me exactly what I needed to learn!

Really? It is an encouraging presentation, for sure, but there is far more skill involved here than it appears.

I'm doing this! A neighbor, years ago built walls like this in her garden and it looked magical.

SHE built them? Or a stone mason or landscaper built them.

@@jakeornot6306 She did it all herself. She first collected the rocks right from the land, then put them in piles according to size, then she built a tiered garden.

Nice dry stack rock work ! I build a wall very similar . I use a log or railroad tie as the center of the wall then mound the stones over the log or RR tie .witch ever you use for center of wall !!

I tried this with my local stone but all my stones have jagged edges , the rounded stone you use looks great.

This takes so much rock. Any ideas where I can find some? I definitely have some rock for my yard, but not enough to do this!

What’s the trick to keeping grass and weeds from growing between the rocks? Can’t mow or weed wack them out and chemicals kill everything.
    Thank you

How do you maintain the mowing edge and do you use anything that prevents grass from growing next to the rocks? I don't see any grass clippings in the mowing edge from a trimmer.

I'm curious about dimensions.....what are the approximate sizes of the larger stones...and the smaller ones....and how high and wide is the retaining area? I'd like to do this with a raised edible garden bed....will it lose soil in rain or is it stacked tight enough that it holds the soil?
