This is not a personal incident that Toy wrote about. Toy served as a Marine in Vietnam. He saw so many of his friends getting "Dear John" letters from their girlfriends and wives, just when the soldiers needed their support the most. It broke Toy's heart to see his buddies go through such pain. So Toy expressed his pain over his friends pain the only way he knew how. Semper Fi.
thats a great story Brenda. Toy was a deep soul, great musician and an American hero, may he rest in peace...Semper Fi Brenda...we could use more like him in today's culture
My husband said he saw the same thing when he was there. He was seventeen when he enlisted in '69 and didn't have a girlfriend but watched a lot of guys go through it. He said it hurt him to see tough, battle weary people just fall to pieces. He watched a guy go through a plate glass door to try and kill himself after reading the letter. It was all so heartbreaking.
Oh I 110% understand this! Besides the fact that I adore & LOVE The Marshall Tucker Band… my husband left for Iraq only 9 months after we married for an entire 15 months from 06-07 as a Cav Scout in the 82nd Airborne. We as a couple made it through without any trust issue or either of us being unfaithful but unfortunately, half of his Unit were getting cheating on and it was absolutely devastating! I was only 19 when my husband was in Iraq, and only married for 9 months before he left but I myself knew exactly what I was signing up for & he was going to leave. I made a promise to him, and I kept that promise. I can NEVER understand why those women would go out and cheat on their Husbands or boyfriends while they are overseas fighting for our Country, fighting for their lives, and need support the most from them. So yes, it’s a big problem our Service men & women have been dealing with for centuries while on a duty of tour and it’s absolutely disgusting! Also.. there are some of us military Spouses that are great women who love, & support our men through it all no matter what. God Bless our Troops & America! ❤️🇺🇸🤟🏻
Marshall Tucker Band is timeless. Toy cadwell set it up that way... he is one of the most under appreciated, Guitarist, singer song writers God has given use. It was all about the music for him... That is why the Marshal Tucker had dozens of members and only one surviving original member. I love how you recognize how Toy sings Lord (Lawd)
This is southern rock at it's finest. Love their music from the 70's. Some of their other big hits were "Heard It In A Love Song", "Fire On The Mountain", "Ramblin’", "This Ol' Cowboy", "Searching For A Rainbow" etc. Southern rock fiddler Charlie Daniels did quite a few collaborations with them such as "24 Hours At A Time".
I'm so glad another generation of listeners is being exposed to this music. Being In a car together with good music is nearly impossible to beat. It was our concert hall.
I got to see Marshall Tucker,38 Special,The Fabulous Thunderbirds and The Allman Brothers in concert in Birmingham Alabama and man what great shows they put on that night. Was about 1996
We had the best music. It was done with real instruments. Real voices! I am 62 and appreciate the music more than ever. Never realized it was so soulful and the blues influenced to I got older. Still the Eagles are the best band ever! Listen to Wasted Time reprise The Eagles if you haven’t. Love you too! You are so kind!
This is totally original music at its brilliant best. It's a blend of country, blues, jazz, and classical ......... Pure genius. the Marshall Tucker band had it all.
Ah. The good old days when people had to have talent, voice wise and instrument wise. Won't find this today. This song was about the Vietnam vets. He was a marine, saw how many of his brothers got dear John letters. Good one, guys! Stay healthy✌️
I saw Toy Caldwell sing this in concert and man can he sing with heart and soul! RIP brother Toy, Tommy and Tim! He finger picked, no guitar pic, very talented! Amazing!!❤️❤️❤️
I love all your reactions this is one of my favorite songs you can hear the pain in his voice although he's not singing from a personal experience he's putting his heart and soul into everything Toy Caldwell sings. Thanks for having such wonderful reactions ❤️
“He favors Nick Nolte.” That old Texas expression is still being used. I love it. To those that don’t know, to “favor” someone, used this way, means the same as to “look like”.
These men were able to do so much with their heart felt blues. I love great blues singers but these guys could not only move your soul with that lead voice but they were able to blend harmonies with those other voices like no other band. Ever !
Man, imagine taking a long car trip with Jamal listening to tunes and his positive personality. It would sure beat listening to the kids screeching and having to pull over every five miles to go to the bathroom!
How can you not love that. I grew up listening to what is known as Classic Rock nowadays. He said he going find a hole in the wall. Gonna crawl inside and die. He hurt bad.
Jamel as a 58 year old white dude it brings me great great joy to you & friends enjoying the same music I also love. I love the blues and understand what a significant part the blues played on all genres of music here in the good ‘ole USA. I wanna personally thank you.. for your channel and how you help bring all of us together. Much love & success from your subscriber & friend. Bobby B.
This live version is the best. I’m not taking away from the studio version cause it was great, but this live performance is longer and has more emotion attached. JMO
A common misconception is that southern rock is rock influenced by country music. It's actually heavily steeped in the blues, and this is a prime example of that. The pain in his voice, the way his guitar cries during the leads - that's 100% blues and soul. Recommend you check out Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ballad of Curtis Loew, Allman Brothers' Melissa, Blackfoot's Highway Song, and Black Crowes' Remedy.
Oh Jamel, bless your Mama for raising three beautiful humans. Can you all be my little brothers? I love the chemistry between the three of you ❤❤❤. You would all have to move to Australia though 😉😉
That was one of the best concerts I went to in the seventies... Bob Segar in 1978 was awesome too ..at the Richmond Mosque in Virginia, the sound in that venue was the best ❤️
Love you and your friends reaching out to listen to what is probably not what you listen to in regular life. I try to do the same. Because it helps us all understand each other better and finding amazing music is always great!
It’s so interesting ….I’ve watched several reactions to this one and so many people start singing along to the chorus.. more than any other reaction I’ve seen. It’s a great one! I had the album this was on in the 70’s
I appreciate all three of you brothers for taking the time to listen to this wonderful song. PS: By the way, whenever you’re free to listen to any song, there’s a song called Love you anyway by Luke Combs.
Toy was the band leader and songwriter, but not the regular lead singer. This is the one he sang in every concert because it meant so much to him. Regular lead singer Doug Gray (the cat with the tambourine in this video) once said "Toy sang his heart out on this song every single night"
Funny thing: The was never a person named Marshall Tucker and it thrills me to see young fellers such as yerselves enjoying good ol' southern rock. A hole in the wall, gonna crawl inside and die...
Great conversation, boys. Here in Ireland, i was sharing your soul thoughts. What a sad tale of tragedy for the Caldwell family. Could life have been more cruel to them? May they all rest in peace, and may their music live forever.
LAWD HAMMERCY! Classic, great song. The song before it "Take the Highway" is another great one, of course it's always nice to have the flute in Rock music.
Missed this when originally uploaded, sadly. Glad I stumbled upon it. So… Heck yeah! We got the crew!?!? Yes! Loving it! Bring ‘em back into the studio, man! I’d LOVE to hear more from ‘em! Ya’ll right!….it ain’t white nor black…guess it’s Southern…when a singer says “Lawd” full force, yeah… that means somethin’! Haha! Bless ya’ll! Love and light to you and yours! ❤🙂
Well I guess I'll always be one of the women who love the oldies. I've experienced this kind of pain, a knife stabbing pain. Never again. It took me 3 yrs. To get over that.
Yo da best. Love your analysis. This song really is a homage to the BLUES songs of such African American blues artists as John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and Howlin Wolf .. . ("That woman is giving me the blues ..")
That song came on by chance when my sister was there ...AND SHE DIDN'T LIKE IT ! I was young unmarried and thought " what the hell " ? Now I'm older and know she couldn't stand the truth . GREAT SONG ! PK
Thanks for doing this in a vehicle, just fits with the first time I heard this, and lived it...if you have not been where he is talking about, just take his word for it, you do not want to go there! lol Perfect react! ☺

Yes, Toy was a great musician, songwriter and human being. He is sorely missed.

24 Hours At a Time, is my very favorite Marshall Tucker song of all time.
You ate absolutely right SOUTHERN ROCK IS PERFECT & SHOULD GET SOOOO MUCH MORE RESPECT. But these kids nowadays don't even feel the real music
Nice cut and paste job... I saw this exact same response, yours of course, on another reaction to this song... UGH
Try “ Virginia” its good song writing for this genre

Wasted Time has been my number one for forty years, nothing else comes close
I would sit around and listen to The Marshall Tucker Band all day long back in my younger years. I'm 66 now and still do!

Good taste in music. They are still one of my favorite bands!

Toy Caldwell, what a talent.
Lawd, I love this song.

Music is the one thing that unites us all. May there be songs to Phil the air.

I love Highway Song. I've traveled a lot and this hits home. Highway Song and Freebird. Awesome solos.
People forget where the Blues began. They forget it MOVED to Chicago. Of course it heavily influenced Southern Rock.
I think you mean Gary Buesy not Nick Nolte 😉.. great song!
I could see that with my bad eye
I love how the lead guitar served as a backup singer giving testimony to what he just sang. Reminded me of BB King and his "Lucille".
Oh Jamel, bless your Mama for raising three beautiful humans. Can you all be my little brothers? I love the chemistry between the three of you ❤❤❤. You would all have to move to Australia though 😉😉
My main biographical song, story of my life. They also made flute playing in rock music cool. Their "Fire on the Mountain" is also a must.
My parents had this album. I remember them listening to it all the time. What fond memories!!
I am having a hard day today, and then I found this! What I would give to be hanging out with the three of you guys, jamming with this song!🎶😎
Soul cleansing... and beautiful.
Everytime I listen to this I feel it deep in my soul. I even get goosebumps and tears in my eyes during certain parts.
This is Southern Rocks best bands. Thanks for reviewing this one
Awe man. You are going way back. Thank you!
That was one of the best concerts I went to in the seventies... Bob Segar in 1978 was awesome too ..at the Richmond Mosque in Virginia, the sound in that venue was the best ❤️

One of my top 5 favorite bands back in high school!❤😉
My bf 80 year old mom recently went to see this band in concert. She’s so cute! 🤣
That’s how you stay young! Never stop rocking!
Great to see you brothers hanging together exploring great music
Been listening to this for almost a handful of decades. Just as good now as the first time I heard it.
SOULFUL SUNDAY! Thanks for making my day 👍🏻 Y'all have a good one...

PS: By the way, whenever you’re free to listen to any song, there’s a song called Love you anyway by Luke Combs.
i love the reactions with your mates … this is a ''summer convertible'' type of song.
Southern Rock (country, rock and blues mixed) at it's best. MTB is from my state of SC.
Amen🙏
If only we could get it through our dam brains that we are all connected.
Peace
My favorite southern rock song .... god bless Toy , may he rest in piece
Saw these guys in concert. Excellent show.

One of my favorite bands along with ZZ-Top out High School! Great song! Oooohhhh Lord!!!
I saw Marshall Tucker and The Temptations in their comeback in the early 1980’s
Brothers Griffen JAMMIN in the car, reminds me of 1976-77 with my Bros, cruising and jamming. Everybody's head was bobbing and singing. MORE!!!!
It is wonderful to see the trio joined once again. You men should take your act on the road.
I've seen the marshall Tucker band live twice and I was a great performance both times
That was a perfect reaction! You nailed it!
LAWD HAMMERCY! Classic, great song. The song before it "Take the Highway" is another great one, of course it's always nice to have the flute in Rock music.
Saw your first reaction to this! An awesome song. Grew up with this song in my high school years
Missed this when originally uploaded, sadly. Glad I stumbled upon it. So…

Toy and that thumb were moving…love his style.
That Lawd not Lord debate is a Southern twang that just gets the message across so well.
You guys get it. You're awesome.
The best song The best reaction hands down ❤️
cool reaction guys, like to see more of ya all..........
Utterly love this song.
When you hear it, you just feel it. It has nothing to do with them, but with you. Do YOU feel it? Cause I did.
Well I guess I'll always be one of the women who love the oldies.
I've experienced this kind of pain, a knife stabbing pain.
Never again.
It took me 3 yrs. To get over that.
Love it !! love you guys...
That signature sound, thumb picking....love it
Yo da best. Love your analysis.
This song really is a homage to the BLUES songs of such African American blues artists as John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and Howlin Wolf .. . ("That woman is giving me the blues ..")
