Mars Gelfo (Hong Kong) plays "Blues in F" for Matosinhos' Competition 2013: A performance in the Hong Kong Cultural Center.
In 2013, I prepared Etude #2 from "15 Low Horn Etudes" by Ricardo Matosinhos for his International Etude Competition. I had a lot of fun learning this piece and others from his books, which can be purchased here:

I was motivated to record for this competition because I love what Ricardo does in bringing jazzy, funky, cool fun to the horn world, and I want to continue honing my own chops in this domain so that I can make some great projects to share with music lovers!
A couple points to note about the music: This is a “low horn” etude. That means the range of notes is a little lower than average for French horn. It’s meant to be challenging - and I love that challenge. A few extended techniques are used, like trills, flutter tongue, and “Multiphonics”, which means singing and playing at the same time.
Some people wonder “Why is this Blues in F if you’re playing in Bb?” - great question, non french horn players :) Since we horn players transpose, our written F is sounding Bb. Sounds like Bb but it’s written in F.
I highly recommend working on etudes outside the traditional repertoire. Matosinhos’ “Blues in F” is a great example. I also like playing Bob Mintzer’s Jazz & Funky etudes for bass clef instruments. Finally, I write my own etudes all the time, including ones that include improvising on a particular fundamental skill but in a fun, groovy context.
Get in touch if you want me to share some of my own etudes with you, or would like some help writing some for your own particular instrumental needs - no matter what your instrument is!

Love it! Spot on with intonation, special effects, tempo and intervalic jumps. Wonderfully executed and wonderfully entertaining.

Great well played!
I've listened to this so many times, I've lost count. Love it.
Me, too. It is jolly.
OK, what was that last note and can it be done on other brass like, say, a trumpet?
Jonathan Gardner sure just sing an octave and a minor 7 above the note you play! you might want to experiment just singing a 5th above to start with :)
Maravilha Marc,Parabéns.
Bravo
You go Gelfo.
