  • Hey everybody! Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Albert Collins Licks From 1993. I've had a number of requests to feature the late-great blues guitar legend Albert Collins, and this lesson dives deep into his playing style while uncovering a number of his slick licks and phrases - so let's dive in!
Albert's legendary and unusual playing style involved tuning to an open F minor chord, and then he'd commonly slap a capo somewhere between the 7th-11th frets (depending on what key he was playing in). This episode mentions his unusual approach, but everything we're playing/targeting here is played in "regular" standard tuning and without the capo. We are keeping the fingerstyle picking approach that Albert preferred using, so you won't need a pick during this lesson.
The ideas shared here were revealed in Albert's classic REH instructional video from March of 1993, which was the same year that he passed away (in November 1993). So, it's an interesting look at near the end of his life and career, and he shares a lot in that revealing and informative/inspiring video.
The ideas shared in this episode include an in-depth primer focusing on getting a grip using Albert's signature and distinct vibrato style, not to mention plenty of slick licks and phrases - including a standard blues phrase with various variations added to the mix, a stinging melodic blues phrase, a funky b5 idea, a funky scat-singing lick, and much more!
Needless to say, if you're an Albert Collins fan, a blues guitar fan, or maybe a player looking for some behind-the-scenes details surrounding an absolute legend of blues guitar music - this episode is totally for you! I am 57 years old...the very first concert I ever went to was Albert Collins playing at the Huntington High School auditorium on Long Island, NY....I was in 8th grade....I was just starting to learn guitar....a friend bought me a ticket for my Birthday....Albert and his band were absolutely killer...this was before wireless gear....Albert had a guitar cord that must have been about a hundred feet long...maybe longer.....he got off stage and was walking down the aisle wailing while the band kept playing....at one point he cuts into the row of seats in front of me and my friends....sits down and starts playing intense hammer - on stuff....leans back to us and says " how y'all doing?..." and reaches out to shake all of our hands...all while playing amazingly.... I think he noticed we were the youngest people in the crowd...it was the most mind blowing display of musicianship and showmanship I have witnessed...I was changed that day....I still play guitar...thank you Dave! I have not thought about that in a while....

so glad you specifically mentioned the showdown album
his mastery of the pentatonic box and his ability to talk and literally have a conversation with his guitar was blistering and i dont think he'll ever have a parallel in raw and aggressive blues guitar

When I was 19, I was lucky to catch Johnny Winter and Albert Collins play an amazing show. I can't remember who opened for who, but Albert shredded so hard, I was in disbelief. I was just a kid and had this idea that telecasters couldn't play with the ferocity of a stratocaster... again, I knew nothing, but that show was so inspiring and I'll never forget what a wizard he was.

Woooow, great timing. I’ve been on an Albert Collins kick! I even just bought a MIJ telecaster!!!! However, I will mention the tele was inspired by your (David Brewster…) new tele. I thought it was yellow. I didn’t know about the filter, and thought it was rad. I love my bright yellow one. Rock on, and thanks for all the great vids.

Very nice. Don't forget to point out when he decides to play something on a bigger (lower) string, it gives lower overtones, making the phrase thicker, creamier, darker - as opposed to the choice on a thinner, higher string which is brighter and thinner.

Mixolydian flavors/patterns tend to go nicely with these 7 chords. I've been going nuts with that Dominant Pentatonic Scale you showed us awhile back (with Minor Pentatonic from the same root, as variation). Thanks, again, David, for presenting us the Dominant Pentatonic Scale!

Both come out of my great State Of Texas. Go watch when Albert and Buddy Guy had a friendly guitar duel, The Ice man Froze Buddy that night 😂 I love Buddy Guy as well he is in my top 3 blues guitarist.
