It was one of the hardest decisions the band ever made. However, he could no longer play the drums on a reliable basis.

I love Keith Moon... But he couldn't keep proper time on the drums hence all the drum rolls in his playing. Pete Townshend, Keith Moon was the worst drummer they constantly had to re arrange the music to suit his lack of talent. Great guy, terrible drummer.
