  • Whatever sex the royal baby is, it will inherit the throne. Elsewhere amongst the aristocracy such equality does not exist - but a whiff of genteel revolution is in the air, Katie Razzall reports.

    keeping the family name alive for one is a good reason.... women marry and change surnames....

      But women could also choose to keep their last names and more than you actually think do just that.

      Forcing the aristocracy to give away family estates and fortunes to closest male relative - and not following the same rules yourselves (the royal family) - that's immoral. Illogical and immoral. It's quite the disappointment really. Long live the aristocracy.

    Males carry the family name, females don’t. Females marry, take a new name, and become part of another household. There are reasons things were designed this way.

      They've restored a lot of it in the last 15 years. Job well done - considering the money, time and effort it takes. Inheritance- and tax laws make these endeavours more than difficult. Nothing's impossible - you should take that to heart.

    Primogeniture seems outdated in 2022. I see from comments only 1 year ago 'women change their names when they get married' - Umm.... not at all rule of thumb anymore! Hasn't been for likely 10+ years.
    I don't know enough about the UK laws, but why can't the family decide whoever they want to pass it down to. The late Monarch changed the rule when (the now) Princess Catherine of Wales was pregnant. If Princess Charlotte would've been born before Prince George, she would've been next in line after Prince William.

      @@thegentleman1743 Because the woman takes the mans name. That’s how it works in this country and always has.

    • @thegentleman1743
      @thegentleman1743 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Except it is not. Tradition changes over time and as the law allows both options the is no single way to do it anymore. In modern society the is neither a social convention nor a practical reason to treat people of different genders differently. My fiancé and I are going to take a double surname.
      I'll give you the same advice I would give the Fulfords: If we want everything to stay as comfortable as it is, everything must change.

    • @FannyShmellar
      @FannyShmellar 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thegentleman1743 Except it is tradition, that’s why we do it. Why would a woman want to have a different name to her children anyway? Or are you suggesting the children should take the name of their Mother’s father as well? For what reason? It makes no sense. If a woman isn’t prepared to take the name of her husband and she rather keep her father’s name, she really can’t be that committed to him.

    We are supposed to live in a democracy, I don't remember voting for the royalty.

    • @alexandradane3672
      @alexandradane3672 ปีที่แล้ว

      Royalty neither rules nor governs - the elected parliamentary party does, led by the Prime Minister . That is democracy. Now go and research the meaning , purpose and role of Monarchy - perhaps go and ask a teacher at your local school for guidance and direction as to how to learn. Good luck.

    • @wisdomseekertv
      @wisdomseekertv ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexandradane3672 My only issue with modern monarchy is the royal family. The entire aristocracy has to play by the rules - except the royal family. They do whatever they want, set rules and don't follow them themselves. It's the only illogical and unfair part of monarchy if you think about it. If you're an aristocrat: "No sons? Give it away to closest male relative and shut up". If you are the royal family: "No sons? Well, let's just change the law and our daughter will rule as queen". Continues to this day. It's just... Uninspirational.
