    Nudes just weren't a thing in the 50s. I think they've just stuck them in trying to appeal to the 'modern' woman who isn't a die-hard vintage gal!

      @@Laurajaneatelier I absolutely agree, very odd! I can so see these on Gillian Anderson lol. I don't even class 90s as vintage, they're definitely not period correct!

  • @Annie-49
    @Annie-49 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    You're right, the packaging is boring. Even a limited edition of something more in keeping with the era would have been much better; then you could choose if you wanted to spend the extra for more authenticity or simply own the shades in the plainer wrapping. I'm guessing you can't find the nudes because there were none then. The nudes are maybe put in to shift more product under the Mrs Maisel brand.

    • @Laurajaneatelier
      @Laurajaneatelier  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree! And yes it’s makes me upset they used the nudes because they aren’t historically accurate

    I agree with 💯 they need to redo the whole campaign with classic 1950's advertising it would be amazing! Especially with the original lipstick tubes. Great video Revlon was the first make up I wore and was great I'll have to try it again the lipstick were very moisturizing.

    The 90s is when Rum Raisin came out. Pink truffle just came out a few years ago. I guess they just put them in a kit because the actresses actually wear them on the show.

      I lived in Toast of New York in the 90s. I still wear Revlon lippies a lot. My cousin wears Wine with Everything now. Still a perfect shade. The texture of Revlon lipstick is very rich and expensive feeling. The packaging is not too bad for the drugstore. They are 4.95 at Walmart. Whats not to love?

    I love Cherries In The Snow. In fact, love is such an understatement. Fun fact: Did you know that this lipstick colour was Sylvia Plath's favorite?
    However, I agree completely. Revlon should have released a different presentation of the lipsticks. Also, I once found that the actual Cherries In The Snow and the rest of the lipsticks have a different formula than the original releases so the colors are slightly different. I wish they could have tried to rescue those original tones just for curiosity, even if they ended up being dupes of the original releases.

    I already have all the reds and agree that just selling them in their cheap modern tubes and adding a postcard and calling it a special thing is pretty sad. I don't know how they can call them limited editions when they've never stopped making them, lol. I don't have the nudes because now that I'm older, brown and beige lipsticks make me look washed out. However, I distinctly remember browns first showing up in the 70's and I wore them and thought they were so cool. I need to check into this Mrs. Maisel business. I'm out of the loop on that. I remember when Revlon brought out a lot of new pinks when "Mad Men" was popular. I have several of those.,

    Love those beautiful red shades...very 50’s...but I wonder if they had “nude” shades back then, don’t think so. I know my Mom had some reds, and wine shades that she liked, and one red, was an orange tone, even though she had light ivory fair skin, she probably wore it in the summer with the light tan she’d get -haven’t watched that series, but now I am going to try it!

    I heard somewhere that Marilyn Monroe was rumored to have worn Certainly Red. It would make sense since it was released in 1951. It used to be the least favorite of my Revlon collection bc it leaned pink on me when I first wore it but the other night I tried it again and there was no pink whatsoever. Maybe it was just the top layer or lighting but I love it now. I wore it to a party, I was in a rush so was bare faced except for the lipstick. This was before I heard about Marilyn Monroe wearing it. There's definitely something special about it bc I didn't feel the need to put on any more makeup. I just curled my lashes and was out the door.

I guess the powers that be are too busy stuffing money in their pockets rather than putting some towards the packaging that would clearly appeal to Revlon customers. With SO many other brands and choices in today's world, Revlon could be a bit more thankful that they still have a following and some interest in vintage as well.

      The Revlon Company was created in the 1930s by Charles and Joseph Revson, born in the US, who became Canadians like you I believe. Avon was never one of their serious competitors--who were actually Cover Girl, Max Factor, Almay, Charles of the Ritz among many others. They became extremely popular both as a result of their excellent products and their marketing in the 50s, most famously featuring in the beautiful Dorian Leigh, who modeled the Fire and Ice and Cherries in the Snow campaigns. They also used Candice Bergan during her college years in the 60s and 70s while at Penn to model nude shades in a rather provocative campaign. Respectfully, a little more in depth research would make your work a little more interesting.

    Great video....too bad the product kind of dropped the ball. Google "classic Revlon shades" and it'll come up with a list of classic shades, dating back to the 1940s (which is a nail polish shade).
    They maybe should have done a classic red and classic pink (instead of nudes, which I agree, don't really belong in a "classic shade" promotion...if I remember right, I've read numerous articles and have seen numerous ads, and it doesn't seem like nude lips make an appearance until the late '60's and early '70's). They could have easily done "Stormy Pink" ('50) "Love That Pink" ('55) and "Luminous Pink" or "Persian Melon" ('56-'57). I have a thing (if you couldn't tell 😂) for classic Revlon shades, and I own them all, except the last two. They are all still in production, but a few you have to buy off Amazon and they can be fairly pricey. I love them all!! So, I agree...they could have done a much better job with this promotion, but the video was great!! ❤

      I love that you bought all of those shades! I bought a few other classic revlon ones from amazon that I’m saving for another 1950s video

      Have you considered doing a lipstick and matching polish video?😁😁 It seems that just about every cosmetic brand I've researched aren't doing "sets" anymore, and I'd be very intrigued to see if you could dig any up! I know Revlon still has the "Cherries in the Snow" polish that matches the lipstick perfectly! It's the only actual "set" I've been able to find... I also have the "Fearless" Revlon polish which matches the "Fire and Ice" lipstick fairly well, but it's not exact. They discontinued the actual "Fire and Ice" polish a while back, and it's basically impossible to find.
      Also, I forgot to add: be careful when ordering the lipsticks off Amazon. I haven't been disappointed for the most part, however; I ordered "Stormy Pink" not too long ago, and it seemed different from the classic shade. From all the pictures I've seen of the original shade, it looks like rich, blue-toned pink with a satin-type finish. The "Stormy Pink" I received was VERY matte and it was a pale, opaque, almost bubble-gum pink. Reminded me of a mod, '60's lipcolor. I don't know if they've changed it or what, but definitely NOT what I was expecting. It's still a nice color, but I can't imagine any ladies from the '50's wearing such a shade....

    They were LAZY. I used to love Rum Taisin in the 1980s. It was older then.

    I agree that the packaging looks terrible! The nudes aren't great.

    This feels very half hearted and like they just wanted to sell shades that aren’t selling well so threw in the nudes? Very disappointing they could have done so much more, thank you for sharing though I wanted to see what they were like but I can’t buy because they test on animals xx

      That’s so true! The nude shades are so random. Also thank you for informing me they test on animals I wasn’t aware of that

    Marilyn Monroe red is siren, an actual coral, revlon. The pink she wore is carnation. Both look awful on me.

    Ugh! The nude package bothered me! Revlon could have made this such a cool marketing opportunity.
