You can't use VR lying down!?

  • Why can't I use VR lying down? Virtual reality headsets have tons of accessibility features but seemingly none of them that support laying down in bed. Almost every headset has some basic screen repositioning but that doesn't help you with the menus in app. The Oculus Quest had a hardware level laying down support that was later removed. Vive has nothing that works at the moment. It seems like none of the big brand headsets are supporting this no-brainer accessibility feature.

    I have a Quest 3 and had some lower back pain flair up recently. I would absolutely love to be easily able to use VR to at least watch video lying down. I can lie on my back and watch TH-cam by dragging the screen up into my vision but it’s a little awkward. Lying on your side doesn’t work because the video doesn’t rotate and 360 video can’t be reoriented at all. This is honestly the top feature that I want in VR right now. It seems crazy that even a 4k device that’s a portable screen strapped to your face has such severe limitations like not being able to use it while lying down.

      @@Drift0r Ya. I bought an Oculus Go when that first appeared in '17 or '18 and was surprised that watching a video in bed with it was so hard. I understand why gaming support might be lacking, but really video support should be easy and there is no excuse for the lack of support there, IMO.

      I was messing around today and discovered that Skybox lets you lock the screen to your head position. You can lie down, on your side, wherever and it just works. This doesn’t apply to the menus however so starting and swapping between videos is not ideal.

      Virtual desktop from the Oculus Store allows you to use your computer laying down in many different VR environments! Making it so you can do anything on a computer while laying down, and a gaming computer isn't needed. Any modern computer is supported.

    The idea of lying in bed and watching content in VR is what originally drove me to buy a VR headset. I was also disappointed by this massive oversight.

    Im not fully disabled, but I have semi-frequent bad days and the very least ive ever found is using virtual desktop to make my computer monitor above me when laying down. This doesnt solve the issue of VR apps, but it let's me at least use my PC in bed and watch whatever I want that way.
    VR Chat has a mode for laying down as well I believe, but its the only app that I know that does as an extra feature. Pillow is an app meant for laying down, so its not like it can't be done intuitively

    Having been a VR user for several years, VR accessibility has been something that has thankfully been improving over the years, but I will say that its a bit shocking that there's not full laying down support, especially when Oculus/Meta had it and then removed it. One could hope they are developing something for the quest 3, but that's just a hope.
    My only suggestion, which I'm sure you have tried, would be to look at OVR advanced settings and see if they have anything that could work. Either way, that's still a third party solution. The only other thing I could think of is to get in contact with VR Content creators that play VR chat, as a lot of people play that game laying down to watch a movie, etc.
    I know I might just be a random commenter, but Ill try asking around the VR community, and hopefully something comes up.
    I wish you the best of luck with all of this, and hopefully you are able to find a solution soon!

    I could be talking out of my hind end here but as a long time viewer that can for once suggest something that might be seen and help. VRchat I believe has this feature. If you mix that in with a few of the worlds that allow you to use a youtube player or web browser. You would be able to watch at least normal videos while laying down. I don't think it works with 360 degree videos and you aren't getting as nice of a screen and empty room background like the youtube app. You can also run it standalone on the quest if you can't be plugged into a computer with your current setup so small benefit there. It is at least a small workaround for now while we wait for someone to do a more dedicated solution. I know many disabled people use VRchat so I would assume this feature still works and worlds like movie and chill have those integrated youtube players. Not a perfect solution but at least I can offer something while we wait for a better solution to present itself.

      @lukatheott 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was gonna say this as well, tho with the caveat that video players in VRchat leave a bit to be desired, it still should be functional for your purposes. there's actually quite a few worlds with TVs at comfortable angles while laying down, VRchat sorta has a whole community around basically hanging out in VR with their friends endlessly. The videoplayers also support watching streams as well, and some worlds even have entire TV shows and movies baked in, stuff that can actually be kinda hard to find elsewhere. it might be hard to nagivate at certain times, a lot of worlds have their custom stuff on menus in the wall, but many worlds also feature custom handheld menus you can grab and keep with you so you can use them when not near the main controls on the wall, or in your case, while laying down. its a mixed bag since everything is kinda custom made... and i guess technically you could commission a VRchat world maker to design you something that meets all your needs, come to think of it.

    if this is so, then it's an oversight of impossibly huge proportions. Which is to say, they don't have it, not because they don't want to include it but because enacting this feature would involve redesigning the entire software infrastructure.

  • @noneyafkn
    @noneyafkn 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It's an issue with gyroscope, sdk tends to be set up based on a floor, and so almost all apps are built using that model, and also most people ceilings don't have enough unique points to hold tracking properly. So it's not a easy thing to solve. Apps would have to be designed with a lay down mode, where you have minimal control, likely just buttons no controller tracking, and the view would be static and move as you move which is uncomfortable if you do move. But it is possible.

    I watched a couple of Amazon shows in my quest 3 basically laying down, maybe a little upright. I think your solution here is seated play if you want to game.
    The reason laying down gaming doesn’t work is the orientation of the world and the lack of a floor relative to the headset’s orientation. This can break a few games as it basically cannot detect your height which could be exploited in multiplayer games.

    Use virtual desktop in the nebula environment, and reposition your screen however you like, though having said that, I'm not sure the keyboard would also rotated with screen when you try to search for something, but you could use on microsoft onscreen keyboard... but yes, I couldn't agree more with you, this should be wide adapted as an option, both for viewing games or movies, granted, playing games would be more difficult in terms of moving your head, but, still, would be a nice option.

    If you can get hold of an old Oculus Go Headset it may be the answer to your problem.
    The browser works perfectly while laying down. You can orient the screen to match any position you are laying in.. even on your side.
    It's fallen out of support at this point but I still have and use mine daily for this specific purpose. It's my bed rig..
    It doesn't work for some apps like Skybox and Netflix, but the browser works perfectly!!
    It's odd that Meta didn't continue with this feature.
    Good luck!!

    If I had to hazard a guess, and mind you I don’t genuinely know the specifics behind how vr headsets work, but I would say it’s probably more complicated than just simply repositioning the screens. As to WHY that’s the case, I’m not knowledgeable enough to answer that but I do think it’s likely a much more complicated issue than it sounds on a technical level

    That was like the 2nd thing i tried after beat saber. I saw the TH-cam app and I was like okay cool i can lay in the bed and watch TH-cam. Nope. On the quest 2 you pull things up and make the boundary level at the level you're laying down at. But any actual apps are just not going to recognize what is happening and make you feel teeny tiny. I can’t believe this. I am able-bodied, and would like to occasionally listen to ASMR in bed. For me, it’s only the TH-cam VR app that’s problematic. Other players will adjust to whatever direction I aim my face/the headset. (Using a Quest 2). I play a boardgame, and it’s the same deal- the field of vision reorients to whatever direction I face.
    Am I missing something in thinking that this can be fixed with an app update? Especially since TH-cam videos aren’t interactive. We literally just watch.
