It's always so refreshing to watch you both give an honest and well thought-out review. Helps so much in making purchasing choices, especially with how expensive games are becoming.
Thanks for the review! Your review pretty much confirmed my general suspicions of the game: A solid mid-weight euro but nothing really to write home about. The lack of theme is a little surprising from a Pfister game and yeah where is the lake?! Glad my friend is getting this game because I wouldn't mind trying it out but I generally go for heavier games.
No problem hope it helped! I'm sure you'll enjoy it if you play with your friend. But yea the issue for us was because of the low theme and lack of novelty it was hard to find an edge to grab onto that would draw us in again and again.
So far I definitely like this one better than Maracaibo. And might even like it more than GWT. It somehow melds the classic Pfister style with a Terra Mystics inspired system. Feels like a very natural fit. The action selection mechanism provides some interesting indirect player interaction, as does the shared map. It is themeless, but I’m certainly not coming to Eurogames to get theme.
Great review ! I apologize if i missed it, but you mentioned at the end that you wouldn't recommend this game over others in your collection. Such as ? What are in your opinion a couple of games that do what this does but better ? I am interested in this game but i would appreciate the chance to look at similar ones that i might not own that is why i am asking. Thank you !
Thank you! I think the obvious choices are Maracaibo and Great Western Trail from the same designer, or Cloudage if you're looking for something lighter. Clans of Caledonia also comes to mind in relation to occupying hexes with cattle, or Cooper Island in relation to discovering and populating a new region.
@@BoardOfItReviews I also thought of Maracaibo and Clans of Caledonia, but Cooper Island is a game i only know by name. I will look up more info since you recommend it ! Thank you !
@@giannisc.5254 Just beware that Cooper Island will hurt your brain! It's pretty tough and the core mechanism of building multi-level terrain is novel but tough as nails.
@@BoardOfItReviews All the better, I like heavy games ! Thanks for the heads up though, I will keep it in mind because I might like them brain burning but the heavier a game is the harder it is to get it to the table.
Sounds like a game that i wouldnt mind trying out a friend’s copy but not own. Too bad though, my wife’s #1, 2 games are gwt and blackout so im always on the lookout for pfistet games
I'd defo recommend Maracaibo if you don't have it. Big fans of that! But yea, Boonlake is worth playing, but I just don't know if you'd want to own it if you already have similar games - that's where personal preference would come in.
Mister Fister's Great Maracaibo Trail : For people who want to play all of his games at the same time.
Somebody get on this immediately
I really love your reviews! Please keep up info such as setup time. Not many other people mention things like this. Happy 2022!
Thanks so much! Don't worry we always will! Happy 2022.
Very informative review. Great job
Thank you!

Thanks Chris! Although what we said still stands, I suspect it's secretly become Tallie's new favourite Euro because she keeps winning ;).

Just got this game at our store here in the US. This review has helped me make a decision on it. Thank you!
We’re always super happy to hear when we’ve helped someone make a decision on a game! 🙌🏻 thanks for watching!
I almost quit the video when you chucked GWT. Blasphemy! 😂
Hahaha that would be totally fair - but never fear we only did it for the showbiz *jazz hands*

That’s fair!

Thanks, I trust your guys' takes. They are often pretty similar to mine. This looks dry and generic.
Hope it helped. It's solid for sure, but if you're a big fan of euros or Pfister, you've likely got what it does covered.
Pretty negative review. Not what I was looking for when I came to look for some rules and thoughts before my first play.
It is likely best if you search for a how to play or playthrough rather than a review, in that case!
